There is one
in the town square area.

Combat is getting so bizarre I feel like I'm not grasping 25-50% of the mechanics fully.

Does anyone know how and why tactics settings sometimes stick and sometimes don't? I'll tell my companion to not use any abilities, and she won't for several battles. Other times, I'll tell her to not use abilities, and the next battle she is set to use abilities again.

It seems it would be pretty hard to pull off a "sleep" spell in this without constantly juggling tactics because you don't want your partner to ever attack the sleeped mob. First you have to select your main guy, put him in battle, select "tactics" , select "do nothing" for you partner, go back to battle, select sleep-casting familiar, cast sleep, select your main guy, put him in battle, select "tactics", then select "attack same target as me" for your partner.

That's just crazy. Unless there is a better way?

Played for about six hours last night (finished everything in Ding Dong) and love it. As is the common opinion, the art and music are absolutely glorious.

I still don't feel like I'm understanding combat completely though. I'm trying to play it like a Tales game, but it feels like it's more a war of attrition of "I'll stand still and you stand still and we'll whack each other until someone dies." I especially don't understand the point of the second familiar you get because he seemed absolutely worthless until leveled up to around 7.

I'll spoiler the continuing question just in case (end of Ding Dong stuff):
I get that you're supposed to use Psyche Up - Go Wild to interrupt major attacks, but there never seems to be enough time to pull it off. I ended up beating that mouse boss just by running around in a circle along the arena edge, throwing out the first familiar, healing, repeat.

I'm embarrassed even admitting any of this confusion because it shouldn't be a problem. I just want to be sure I'm getting everything out of the game tactics-wise.

would love answers to either/both these questions, because, frankly, the demo just felt chaotic/sloppy to me, & it's concerns over issues like these that are holding me back from jumping in...

The second familiar hits harder against creatures that are the same element as he is. Also, his "psych-up" ability is pretty awesome against slower attacking enemy types, as he unleashes a constant barrage of attacks.

The general rule is - pair familiars against enemies that share their element. Some familiars you get are slow and have bad melee skills. Throw these guys in to cast a spell, then pull them out right after casting and put a melee familiar in to finish off the enemy. I'm pretty sure that the same-element advantage applies to spells as well.

i think 2 copies for any target is the number. that's how many i had too. lol.

Yeah, it sucks! My boss and my co-worker also failed at securing their copy yesterday as well. All the stores they went to were sold out as well.

I'm hoping Amazon will have my order by tomorrow, since it's "Shipping Soon," but I'm expecting Friday. I started playing Rogue Galaxy on my PS3 to get my Level 5 fix in the mean time. Lol.

Has anyone gotten far enough in the game to learn to hit SQUARE in battle to perform "All-Out Defense" ?

This is outlined in the game manual... and there is debate of if it is even possible. Was it possible in the 2nd segment of the demo, where you have multiple party members?

I don't remember it from the demo, but (general game spoilers, nothing plot related)
I've seen video footage of battles where it's possible - the command pops up on the left hand side. I believe it isn't unlocked until about you're a way into the game, thoguh.

You're better off popping in something like Chrono Trigger, FFVI or the first Lunar. They're more suitable for the amount of epicness you will experience.

Huh? I thought you were meant to follow the Sun > Moon > Star > Sun mechanic? That's what I've been doing (as well as Sun=Sun etc) when possible and it has had a noticeable effect, at least putting one of my sun familiars v a Star enemy and I would get bashed really fast compared to Star vs Star. There is also the actual elemental affinities but those seem a lot harder to learn on the fly since you'd have to study the compendium.

On my phone so I'm keeping it short.
Just picked up my 1st party member, and have been experimenting with familiar pairings, and have also just learnt about metamorphosing and taming. Combat has become weird because the tactics don't seem very smart, and it also seems really hard to micro manage, so I have to rely on tactics I'm not 100% happy with.
Combine that dilemma with
the problems I had before, which were not being able to counter-attack with good accuracy, and also not being able to defend properly (two familiars have an 'evade' and one has a 'Psych Up') I feel like I'm taking a lot of unnecessary damage.

When can you start evolving your familiars? Mine are about level 15 and I'm in the desert area.

Pretty soon after where you are, it's coming up in the main storyline.

I have to say the difficulty curve in this seems like it's been almost perfect. I definitely haven't been shying away from battles in order to push my level, and I'm doing the majority of the side quests (cuz.. they're awesome) but they seem to have hit a real sweet spot, where I've only died a couple of time, battles feel challenging but doable.

K, so pit same element vs. same element? I was confused by this, cuz in another Level 5 masterpiece, Jeanne D'Arc, it's more like Rock Paper Scissors, certain elements are more effective against others etc.

Can't wait to pick up this game tomorrow. Watched the first hour or so yesterday of the game with a twitch feed and I was in love from the first second. I loved everything from the music, the graphics, artwork, gameplay, story, animation, absolutely all of it. What a beautiful game! Can't wait to play, just have to get this thing called work out of the way the next couple days...

Ok I'm sold. Cheapest place to pick this up/pre-order in the UK?
Cheapest seems to be Amazon, at 36 GBP, which seems strange (usually at least one out of the various online retailers is cheaper).

Of course, you could just buy it right now on the US PSN for 35.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
How many familiar are there for Oliver?

Haven't started playing yet, but have one question.

Can I catch multiple of the same familiar?

Also has anyone else NOT gotten their code from Amazon?

I'm pretty sure this is what the tutorial taught me, and seems to have been working so far. Does anyone else have an opinion on this?

There are also a bunch of "damage type affinities" under the familiar's status screen. It shows like 6 elements, with either a blank, check mark or cross over the box next to it. What do these mean?

So do I have to worry about feeding and levelling and evolving and skill picking for familiars at all? Can I waste items like the food items or should I specifically hold on to certain things?

If you read that rock book tutorials, he says the element affinities are a rock-paper-scissor thing too (sun, star, moon, then planet is something separate). I have no idea though. Even on a 55" tv, the element symbols next to enemy names are like 5x5 pixels so I wasn't paying attention.

Posted my thoughts above on the Familiar 'types'. As for the 6 elements, a check mark means that familiar is resistant to that element while a cross means they are susceptible to it. Dashes are just normal I guess. I got this from the manual and the Book dude.

Oh right I forgot about the Book dude. I need to go through all his entries.

I heard like 300+. Though I haven't been getting any, save the ones you get from story. I guess capturing is told in the story? Dunno.

Me too, I have the Mitey and the monkey one only.

I've played for about five or six hours now and I just finished doing everything I could in Ding Dong Dell.
So far this is basically Dragon Quest IX-2 to me, it seems to heavily borrow and improve so many things from it, though I like DQIX's battle system better than NNK's.

I woke up this morning wanting to start the game, but it turned out that the 16GB file downloaded last night was corrupted. So I downloaded it again this morning and it's installing now. Fingers crossed that nothing went wrong this time, because I just downloaded 32GB in less than 24 hours. (._. )

Also really teeny tiny gripe, but one that will expand over 50 hours, is having to press select to categorize my bounties/errands. Who thought having potentially hundreds of completes side quests on one screen as the default choice would be better than having the more simple 'active' quest log? :(

I played for about an hour last night, and I am enjoying it so far.

The VA (especially for Drippy), is excellent.

Looking forward to seeing the rest of the game!

Huh I know nothing about this game.
Is it a solid RPG? (like what Final Fantasy used to be)

Also kinda surprised they left the title untranslated.
Do people know what Ni no Kuni actually means or how to pronounce it?

So how is the full game then?
The demo did nothing for me and I was so excited to try it:(

The ghibli animation quality was nowhere to be seen ,the english dubs felt a lot worse than most of the movie dub voice actors, the combat seemed unintuitive and shallow and the pathfinding when you attack after circling around a boss was a disaster.
RPG combat somehow also feels really out of place in anything ghibli related.

The demo was really short so it's hard to get a proper full impression from it.

I also felt like the menus/monster names/quests/objectives in the demo were all designed for a very young audience.
Ghibli stories and the worlds they build in the movies are nothing like that.

I just got the impression studio ghibli had little to do with the game other than lending the name and some of the art design.

I think it's "The Other World" or something like that.

Yeah, it just means "Second Country"

Are people playing the American dub or the Japanese? I am thinking of going with the American voices so my girlfriend can listen while she does other things but I am curious on how good the dub is.

Pretty good, bordering on great. I'm still not sold on Oliver's VA but everyone else (especially Drippy) is amazing.

It's become clear to me that I need to get a guide. These side quests are killing me.

Because you're getting little to no assistance on what to do/where to go? This is the stuff I need to know before I really dive in tonight. The Prima guide wont get to me until the 30th-31st. Obviously I have you guys, but when I need an immediate answer, GAF isn't always there unfortunatley =/

Well, my PS3 froze during the download of the 16GB file so I had to unplug it, and I assume that's the reason why it got corrupted. But yeah, it was pretty crappy. Fortunately, the second try worked fine and the game works now.
