To this day I kick myself for selling my model 1 Genesis when I got a PlayStation back in 96.

I still miss it, so many good memories. I think I miss THIS thing most of all, maybe my favorite controller ever.

^god, i loved the crap out of that stick, used it for years & years - sat it right across my lap growing up. after enough use, the metallic bottom wore down a bit, and occasionally during use, you'd catch a static shock..it balanced out the auto-fire use, we figured.

It should be noted this is also availble on XBLA, and in English.

It should be noted that this is available on the Wii's Virtual Console. It's weird, I love GameFreak, Mega Man, and Sonic, but this game never clicked for me.

It should also be noted that all three of these are ridiculously expensive.

Such a great console. I remember way back wanting NHL 94 more than anything since that was the game all my buddies and I would play. Somehow I ended up with some unknown game called General Chaos that Christmas. I was let down at first, but I grew to love it and I tracked down my own copy of NHL later the following year.

I'd recommend this game to anybody building a Genesis collection.

GeneralChaos.jpg

Oh, and I'll also toss Mutant League Hockey into the mix.

MutantLeagueHockey.jpg

^ the original EA NHL Hockey was awesome as well. It's funny how they always used to use cyan for the ice. I mean, I know the palette was limited, but it had white.

Rygar 8 Bit

Jaguar 64-bit
my guess would be that they used that color so the player sprites would stand out if they used white some of the sprites would blend into the floor

Had that stick as well (got it with Streets of Rage 2) ..... thing was goddamn solid.

Alien 3 was a fucking awesome game, as was Robocop Vs Terminator.

Sold my Megadrive and SNES to fund my Playstation purchase, exciting day but also the end of an era.

16bit era was awesome.

That is exactly the same TV that I have used since 1995 or so and is where I do all my retro gaming to this very day. I was playing Fatal Fury 2 on Neo AES on it two nights ago in fact. It's super.

Funny that the little door is busted off of this one in the front too. Apparently a design flaw. :)
What TV was it? The Craigslist listing is deleted.

Ah, I've got one very similar to that. Maxes out at S-Video out, but that's good enough for me for now... Heavy as hell, though.

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
When it comes to SHMUPs and side-scrolling action games, the Mega Drive is a beast. The system had a cult following in Japan and it showed in its library of games.

As I make my way through the Game Sack videos, last night I saw the one for Genesis/Mega Drive Shooters. It has an interesting look at a lot of the different shooters on the system... Never even heard of Eliminate Down, its rarity intrigues me!

Same here, I traded or sold all my Genny stuff for a Playstation in October of 95. Model 1 Genesis (not the High def graphics one, but the second version), Model 1 Sega CD and a 32X with several games all in perfect condition. Years later I acquired a Model 2 (didn't know at the time that the sound sucked on these) a model 2 Sega CD (not as cool as the front loader) and a 32X all on the real cheap. But I don't have anywhere close to the same amount of games and most of them are in crappy condition. I miss my original collection. Oh well, such was the life of a poor college student in the mid 90s.

Being 10 when I got one, it was a big ask on my parents to get one - so I was grateful. I only had Sonic 1 for a good while after release. I probably played it more than some played Oblivion for....

springyardzoneact1_shot1.png

Amazing time of discovery coming as I had from a ZX Spectrum (128k memory!)

A top ten of sorts? Probably preaching from the same hymn sheet as many, but believe me...I played a LOT of crap on it too

For me:

Road Rash 2
Sword Of Vermillion
Rocket Knight Adventures
Sonic 1 (amazing game and tbh the new sprite in 2 onwards didn't appeal as much)
Gunstar Heroes
Ghostbusters (sue me)
Streets of Rage 1 (again the hype tends to be for 2 and 3 but bigger didnt mean better for me really)
Thunderforce 4
Wonderboy in Monsterworld
Desert Strike

Yeah, I'm not too picky on video connection. I used coax or composite for so long that I really don't mind that quality of picture with these old systems. It's more jarring to see the pixels for me!

And yes, that TV is fucking HEAVY!

This thing was a BEAST I loved it, but never owned one personally.

I once had 50% of the entire US collection for genesis games. I only beat about 75 of the games max. That six button controller and better arcade ports really smashed the Snes in the face though. Rather play it on the Gens then the Snes.

yeah, i couldn't get it in time cause of my work schedule, but fortunately there's several others (same size/model) for sale about $50 or less, when i've got the room i'll actually look around - in another thread, i was advised to turn it on & play with the contrast a bit to expose any flaws, sounded like good advice!

Aside from the number of buttons, are there any major differences (build quality?) between that and the one I have?

i was always curious about that as well, never did get to use the 6-button version but it looks quiet similar in design.

I recently got an urge to plug in my old Genesis 2. Unfortunately, I think I lost some of the cables along the years. All I have is this RF unit(?) and I don't see how I could connect it to my hdtv. Anyone have suggestions how to make it work?

Thanks.

I think most HDTVs still support RF... there should be a circular knob sticking out nearby all the connections you can stick it on. No guarantees it'll work well, though.

Else, you'll have to get some AV cables off of eBay or Racketboy or something. If you're feeling particularly bold, you could also ship your Genesis off to somebody to get it S-Video-modded, or find a SCART/RGB21-to-component converter on eBay (and a SCART/RGB21 cable, of course; bear in mind, they're shaped similarly, but SCART cables and RGB21 cables have different pin layouts, so try to be consistent) and play it with component output instead (assuming your TV supports 240p, which a lot don't these days).

Monster World 4! Bought it off of PSN when it came out and couldn't stop playing it. Great music, huge charming sprites and fun gameplay. The system was a godsend for shooters like everyone mentioned, but one I always wanted to try was Panorama Cotton...sadly I don't think we're ever going to see that out again nor will we see the crazy price drop.

I actually brought the game on eBay AFTER playing it on an emulator. I was just so impressed with what the Sega 16 console could do, and it didn't help that I was on a Genesis/Megadrive kick at the time either. Works fine with just a Game Genie. No regrets, but I've yet to do something like that on say, Battle Mania II. ^_^;

I've been playing that today on the Wii VC.

My brother kept complaining that the music was repetitive. I... can't say as I've really noticed, but then I'm a 16-bit kid, and he was 2 when Halo: Combat Evolved came out.

I was just thinking that. It's been in the same spot for about 3 weeks, I might want to hurry up before it gets bought.

man, buy it & sell it on here if you don't want it! i made peace with my PSX remakes after selling my Sega-CD ones, but there's bound to be some folks pretty excited to see it on here

I really loved the Disney Sega games. Castle of Illusion, Quack Attack. So good.

true...most of the capcom disney NES shit was quality, but the genesis stuff just stands out, id add Aladdin and Mickey Mania, not so much Fantasia for me but others might

Best XMen game ever.

not to betray my own thread here BUT while 2 is better than 1 (as i recall), mutant apocalypse on SNES was overall better

Is the game rare?
I got the Japanese version of the game when I picked up a JP Mega Drive 2 system with 10 games on Yahoo Auctions JP for about $30 (shipped) about 3 years ago. I hadn't heard of the game before then. I just want the system and it had other good games that I wanted like Streets of Rage 2 and Golden Axe 2. All the games had boxes and manuals as well.

It could just be that the game isn't rare at all in Japan.
For example, Panzer Dragoon Saga is rare in the US, but in here in Japan where the Saturn was relatively popular I picked up a used copy of the JP version of the game with box/manual for about $5.

About 6-7 years ago I picked it up for $50 cib. Guess prices went up in the meanwhile?

I highly recommend the game for anybody who wants a LTTP like experience on the Genesis. It does a few unique things as well, too.
And its main plot twist would later be echoed in Nier
.

Yeah its about $80 plus on Amazon. Doesnt help that it was an Atlus published game :p

Second the motion that the 6 button with the shoulder mode button is the best Genesis controller. Snagged one of these last week at a thrift store and damn is it awesome. Feels great for all games.

I really wanna pick up a 6-button controller sometime. All I've got are the 3-button ones, and all three of them have the stiffest D-Pads imaginable... I have no idea how I got used to this as a kid. Meanwhile, I hear the 6-button ones have D-Pads akin to the Model 2 Saturn's (ie: the best D-Pads ever), which has my interest piqued.

hmmm...you know what, maybe it wasn't popular in the west? when i came to the west, only then have i heard of Halo (i'm from asia). having come here, sometimes there are just these games that people never heard of when you're living on one side of the world. (or was it because Xbox was nonexistent in Asia?) xD
