Ok, so only their video game branch may be a bubble, good for their engine licenses and military vr stuff... i guess it makes sense when Yerli says that crazy things about the industry dying and f2p been the salvation.

Crytek is just freaking loaded. They have studios everywhere. At this point I wouldn't be surprised if they are the largest independent studio in the world.

Achieved with CryEngine 3...

Crytek around the world:

1. Crytek Frankfurt (Germany) (Flagship Studio)
- Far Cry
- Crysis
- Crysis 2
- Crysis 3
- Ryse (upcoming)

2. Crytek UK (formed with members from Free Radical)
- Crysis 2 (multiplayer design)
- Crysis 3 (multiplayer design)
- Homefront 2 (upcoming)

3. Crytek Kiev (Ukraine)
- Warface (upcoming)

4. Crytek Budapest (Hungary)
- Crysis Warhead
- CryEngine development
- Fibble - Flick 'n' Roll
- Unnamed project

5. Crytek Black Sea (Bulgaria)
- WorldShift
- Unnamed project

6. Crytek Istanbul (Turkey)
- Developing free-to-play systems for Crytek's games

7. Crytek Shanghai (China)
- Engine licensing business development
- Technical support
- Chinese localization

8. Crytek Seoul (South Korea)
- Engine sales / support

9. Crytek Austin (USA) (formed with members from Vigil Games)
- Unnamed project

Maybe, even if I find that unlikely.
Should we hope for that? Nope.

More action adventures, please.

I totally agree. I would be disappointing if this new studio was put to work on another FPS. Even if they can't get the Darksiders license from THQ, they should just work on a spiritual successor to Darksiders. Much in the same way that Crysis was a spiritual successor to Far Cry.

People keep mentioning their lucrative military contracts, but I've only ever seen the 57M contract they (RT Immersive) signed with the US Army in 2011. I suppose they have low-key visualization projects with various people, but enough to float all these Crytek projects? Seems optimistic.

I'm wondering how this works. Lets say Vigil's IPs and rights are bought by some company (e.g. EA), aren't the employees legally binded by a contract? Patrice was part of the contract; I'm sure whatever company acquires Vigil's assets would want to continue the work on Crawler with the same team.

If they bought the studio, then maybe. If it's just IP and game assets, then no. Plus it's not fair for the employees to sit around (and not get paid) and wait for a buyer that may or may not come.

A big action/adv title using Cryengine3. Oh god. The possibilities.

I didn't think Crytek would be the one to come through.

Well, maybe the person I talked to spoke too soon. Or maybe they're not ready to announce anything yet. Who knows?

Like I said before, I assume Crytek made this move so they can have the Vigil guys work on something new. The Darksiders IP is not all that lucrative, anyway.

It hasn't even been available for auction, so it will take a few more days or so to find out if they want it.

How big was the original Vigil team?

Well they had over 180 employees at the beginning of 2012. Then that layoff early in the year happened, laying off an addition 79. Considering any additional declines, they were probably somewhere between 80-100 employees at the very end.

I guess we'll only know when they get in trouble. Until then, it's just pure speculation of how profitable they are and how much money they have in cash.

Crytek, I love you! That Jason comment on Twitter made me think on something. Vigil could have been overlooked in this auction because every other company thought that others would outbid them for sure.

In Early 2012 they were also working on Darksiders 2 and the Warhammer 40k MMO. I think when they layed off those guys the rumor was that the MMO will be turned into a SP game.

That was the official statement regarding DMO actually.

In reality it seems they canned that as well eventually and worked on an FPS called Crawler for the last two months of their existence.

Aaah ok. I wasn't sure if the canned it. I remember conflicting reports and I apparently not up to date. ;)

Crawler was probably nothing more than in pre-production. If that.

"Did Crytek even make money on the Crysis franchise - they are just tech demos after all?"

Well Vigil wouldn't have come with the Darksiders IP, which is all they've done. Without the franchise they built up, and with no games ready to ship likely for another year or two at best, there wasn't a lot of incentive to buy them unless a publisher just had a dormant IP to put them to work on.

By their own admission they hardly made money on C1&2.

I still find it hilarious that they consolized Crysis 2 in an attempt to get more sales, and then the game ended up selling about the same across all three platforms as Crysis 1 did as a PC only game

As Crysis 1 did in 4 years, yeah.

Actually, that's not what they claimed at all.
They said all Crysis games were profitable.
But they also claimed that without piracy spoiling their sales could have been three or four times better.
Which honestly I find a very silly claim, more wishful thinking that something grounded in reality.

Not unexpected, but I actually don't care about the Darksiders IP.
If they are going to work on something similar, I don't mind what characters or setting they are going to use.

Also, what about that rumored "Crawler" they were working on?
I wonder if there is any chance to see it finished, even under a new name and with a bunch of heavy changes, at this point.

tragic tweeted "I'm in", does that mean he's Crytek now? Seriously, Vigil without tragic doesn't interest me half as much, even though I'd still play their games for sure.

They employ almost 700 people. That is just crazy and definitely more then Epic.
