Halo |OT14| They call it Halo

Microsoft's IllumiRoom http://www.dvice.com/archives/2013/01/microsofts-illu.php

Someone may be able to fill me in. These new spartans in Halo 4 are they genetically altered? Did they have metal infused to their bones? If not how the hell can they be so agile with the heavy ass armor.

All Spartans are. A few base modifications include:

-Muscle enhancements
-Neural modifications that literally make Spartans think and perceive things faster. You know how coffee can make things feel slower? Think that but all the time.
-Improved eyesight going as far as night vision sometimes.
-"Carbide ceramic ossification" is when they essentially modify their bones with ceramics and space-age polymers to make them virtually unbreakable. The process feels like "glass breaking inside your marrow," though.

Their suit is also powered armor, keep in mind. It augments their strength even further, rather than forcing them to literally "carry" their half-ton suit around as they wear it.

It's actually kind of funny; Master Chief is one of the only protagonists who could actually justify carrying five or six weapons with him at all times yet he only needs two or three firearms. Good on Bungie for making that decision.

Activision gives Bungie the capital to make ports, and the game in general, that's the nature of a publishing deal. Now, it's certainly not essential that Activision releases Destiny as a 720 launch title, but given that it was in the contract and it would great to have it on the new console, we are all hopeful that it will be.

I can't speak for the Xbox Live service outside of the US, but as for hardware, I doubt we'll see the same issues that plagued the 360. The 360 was intentionally rushed to the market by MS, the next Xbox shouldn't have that issue.

You're going by a leaked contract which was signed in 2010, maybe written in 2009. They openly call the next gen consoles Xbox 720 or PS4 theoretically. A lot of things change from the time of the contract to now. I bet they didn't even know then, that the next gen consoles wouldn't be out till 2013 or later.

I'm going by recent leak by the advertising company that Bungie hired in 2012. The promotional poster that they made clearly showed the destiny logo, font, and only Xbox 360 and PS3, they wouldn't have designed the promotional materials so soon, if they knew there was going to be a next gen release.

Activision may have given them the financial capital to release the game, marketing and publishing etc. But Activision isn't going to give them a blank check. HALO 4 was the most expensive game MS has ever made, I doubt Activision even came close to providing Bungie with that type of money and Bungie being a mid-sized studio with a lot of new hires, I highly doubt they have the internal cash or capital to take risks publishing and devoting resources to consoles that haven't even been announced yet. That's not to say it's not possible, for all we know a small team at Bungie could be porting the Xbox 360 build for the nextbox, I'm just stating its highly unlikely.

Keyes was not particulary a great character either. Halsey is the only well-written and established female character in the series to me if you're not counting Cortana.

That said they clearly weren't angling Palmer to be loved and adored so judging the character by that is a waste of time.

When did they say they didn't want Palmer to be liked or adored? I haven't seen as much promotion for a character like they've given to Sarah Palmer. Perhaps only Lasky got enough face time or recognition they've given to Palmer. Even if they didn't want her to be liked, they at least expected she'd be accepted or respected, not for everyone to wish she died in each weeks upcoming spartan ops episode.

I can tell you, as someone who was sad when a lot of halo characters died in the games over the series, I'd probably be happy or crack up laughing if Palmer died.

I like how 343 and bungie spent so much time and effort on armor customization, then need to take off the defining piece so you know who is who. Lame.

Protip, Madness, don't double post. If you think a logo on a poster is "final marketing material" then you are insane.

Several possibilities with promo materials:
-MS probably hasn't released a final logo for the new Xbox to anyone yet (if it even exists yet), so it couldn't be put on promo material.
-It's possible that Bungie is going to announce their game prior to MS announcing their new box, so obviously they couldn't mention that it is coming to the new Xbox at that time.
-That promo material could very well not be final, as it hasn't been released intentionally yet.

I'm going to go ahead and make the assumption that Destiny is a more expensive than Halo 4 considering it will have at least 2 versions (possibly 4 with possible ports to PC and the new Xbox) and Bungie is a larger studio than 343. Activision wants this to be the biggest game in the world for the next 10 years, and the plan has been laid for games and expansions for that time period, I seriously doubt they didn't throw some pretty insane money at this.

Have we had any confirmation that Destiny will be launching with next gen consoles?
This article is the closest to hearing any sort of information about multi-platforms and Destiny. Although, nothing is confirmed directly, just more chatter.

I see Bungie announcing their game before GDC this year in March, since they're discussing their new world there. As far a multiplatform, I wouldn't be surprised if this fall we get it on the current Xbox and it's successor, then following in 2014, we get all the other consoles on board (PS3, PS4, PC).

When they do kill of Palmer, there's going to be so many people raging at 343.

"SHE WAS THE BEST NEW CHARACTER!"

"Oh yeah, why don't you kill off the only strong female character left in the series!?"

"Halo 5 pre-order cancelled"

"I was hoping she might get her own spin-off ODST style. Well fuck you 343!"

So Palmer has been playing Halo 2/3 recently because she was dual wielding magnums. She's already ditched her own trilogy, plus her personally developed and story written Halo 4:ODSPalmer is coming out soon.

I'm also very confused on how Roland got out of being overridden, I thought that was impossible.

Orbital Drop Shock Palmer is something I want to play.

Well, there's no way that logos that don't yet exist for systems that are yet to be named/also don't yet exist could appear on a promotional poster made last year, so that's not too surprising.

We don't really know what's going on until we see some sort of official announcement. I wouldn't be surprised either way, though. Had that leak not happened late last year, we would know almost nothing about the game. Bungie's keeping this very close to the vest. I'm kind of thinking that the reason they're holding off on releasing any details about the game is that they're waiting for next-gen consoles to be revealed first. I could be wrong, though. I often am.

Two questions for David Ellis, if you're reading this.

Does Halo 5 take place after Spartan Ops or does it start during it at some point?

Are you waiting to reunite Chief and Halsey until the end of a trilogy as a "reward" for Chief or are you planning on having them meet up sooner than that? I've been really curious about this one since there's so many opportunities to have them meet up.

Why wouldn't you assume that Bungie would release for the ps4 then as well? Seeing as how they have been rumored to launch pretty close to one another and the fact that more and more leaks about orbis have come rather than durango.

Activision is smart, and while they may want Destiny to become a huge success it isn't guaranteed. I don't think Activision gave them close to the money Microsoft allowed 343 for Halo 4. Not even Treyarch got that much for Black Ops 2. You give that much money for a well established game/name, not for one that may or may not sell. I love Bungie, they're perhaps my favorite studio, that doesn't mean I don't have a knot in my stomach that Destiny may not be as good as I hope.

Is Bungie truly larger? The article from digital foundry showed that 343 called on Microsoft dx11 engineers and artists, other studios etc. I remember Kiki saying in an interview at one point they had 500+ employees working at 343 on Halo 4. In the recent article with Polygon, it's stated Bungie has about 350 in crunch. Naturally these numbers go down once the main game ships. 343 is definitely leaner now, but it's now an independent studio, backed by a publisher which had whispers of being for sale.

Activision may want Destiny to carry its name forward, but a modern warfare 4 or Black Ops 3 or whatever they have planned for next gen launch is going to dominate sales. As much as I hate the series now, I won't deny it has a name recognition and sales that are unmatched. I have 40 year old uncles who buy call of duty and 6 year old cousins who buy call of duty.

I'll admit they don't have the logo finalized and that's why the promotional pieces didn't have any mention of next gen, I'm just saying when you have GTA 5 only being current gen, you have games like watch dogs be current gen, why do you think bungie, which is going multi platform for the first time in a long time internally, can support not only millions of ps3 users, but now add a new console as well? I just don't see it. I hope I'm wrong and we have a better version for the nextbox but I have a feeling it's Xbox 360/PS3 launch and maybe pc port later.

Let's remember one final thing, Activision is only a publisher. It's not like 343/MS or Bioware/EA, bungie is its own company, and Activision has to run its own studios and has shareholders to answer to, they won't write a blank check for Bungie.

I'm a little cranky today, but there's a multi-quote button for a reason. You did the same thing a couple of pages ago.

Pretty cool that Kevin agreed to do the podcast. No softball questions Tashi!!

Oh, you don't have to worry about that.

It's awesome Kevin agreed to it, but those are some pretty big restrictions, question wise.

I'll pm you mine later today

I'm just trying to avoid asking questions that he can only answer with, "We can't talk about that at this time". It's just a dead end.

Can I PM about some Dominion suggestions?

Suggestions? Suggestions aren't really great for an interview.

I've got a ton of questions in my PM box already, keep em coming!

Roland seems kind of "simple" for an AI. I've gone from liking him to having my suspension of disbelief dispelled by the shit he says. I believe that in one of the latest missions he says something to the effect of "Hold on. Humans are terrible at writing manuals." My immediate reaction was, "So an intelligent AI is sitting down at a table and reading a manual?" It was so stupid.

A thousand apologies Dax/Zoey, I'm still getting used to NeoGAF and haven't gotten it down. I'm also using my phone and so reading and replying to posts is different. I'll make sure to multi quote from now on.

We don't know much about Roland. Presumably he's a fourth gen AI meaning that he can adapt like Cortana, theoretically even better (Cortana apparently figured out how to disable her kill switch Halsey embedded in other 3G AIs.)

It's awesome that he's going to be on w/you!

I don't care for 343's top-secret handling of the TU, though. The way the game's been bleeding players lately, you'd think it would be in their best interest to at least let us in on the broad strokes.
