FPS are the only real example I can think of... A platforer wouldn't gain much if anything from VR, over the shoulder maybe?

It's never going to work as sunglasses because the image needs to surround the eye.

Who'd buy them, though? They have an open-source product made of off-the-shelf parts. It wouldn't be hard for someone else to make something similar, even compatible.

I think what they're doing is fantastic, and I'm way excited, just saying I don't see them as a company being able to hang once the big boys show up.

So what tech was there? They pretty much whipped it all up from scratch. The actual impact they've made was showing that there's an interest in the technology. Not that some switch was flipped that made it all suddenly possible.

The big three are already so concerned and risked up on the next generation, even if they've got some kind of VR in the queue, it'd still be way down the line.

Cockpit-based stuff like racing and flight sims are going to be the most immersive, because it jives well with the experience of sitting down while being able to look around.,

I actually don't think shooters are going to be as compelling as people think. When you see people use the Rift, they like looking at stuff, and shooting everything and moving on quickly might not be as compelling. I think something like Portal, where you're surveying the environment, and where there's this amazing sense of motion that will feel really fun.

Adventure games, too, are probably going to be interesting with VR. This idea of scouring the environment and looking for clues seems to fit well with how people interact with VR. A detective game would be really cool.

No they didn't. They bought it from companies that had been selling those same parts for cell phones. It's a kit product.

Now they have a modified accelerometer that runs at 1000Hz instead of the stock 250Hz they used in the earlier products, but even that's not really a new piece of technology. Any hardware company could make it. The LCD is just a stock panel they bought.

Jimmy Fallon? From what I have seen so far its gonna be him looking really confused, run around like "He is in the world!", lots of giggling and then he runs straight into a wall. Or if he is handed a controller he is just gonna spin around uncontrollably.

Then that's pretty big. I never would've expected even a year ago that virtual reality could be real and that this many people would seem to be interested. That being said I disagree that it can't become bigger. Just in the same way that people bought plastic guitars and Wii's. It could be one of those cultural flash points. Hopefully it doesn't die like those but a good price and support (lots of games, mobile, next gen consoles) could send it over the edge.

Whether it's this or another similar product, VR is going to hit the mainstream. It has that "gotta try it" factor that sold so many Wii systems, but it offers something potentially a lot more substantial.

I haven't heard one person who tried the Rift and didn't describe it as something profoundly impressive.

I mean, I don't know if the audience being wowed was overshadowed by people thinking it was a gag product or something. That reaction is definitely what the product needs from a mainstream audience, but people thinking the thing is puerile probably isn't.

What do you mean by a non-3D image? I'm not sure if that's possible on the 7 inch one due to the overlap. Unless I'm misunderstanding how the new screen works with the optics.

Rightfully so--That time shift photo mode was pretty cool. I would probably never have known it existed if I hadn't watched that. Maybe all the phone nerds just saw rift for the first time.

Before, on the tv it would display a splitscreen with tunnel vision, looks great in the Rift but not outside. on Fallon they displayed a non-split image of what Jimmy was seeing, making it useable for recording video.

That was a terrible showcase for the Rift. Damn thing didn't get nearly the exposure it should have.

Actually, VR with stereo vision where you could look down as you jumped, would allow for first person platformers with a lot of real complexity. It would solve the problem of depth perception in 3D, and being able to look down at platforms as you jumped would make everything much easier to control.

If you ever played Metroid Prime--an FP game with a lot of excellent platforming--you can sort of imagine doing that with a headset. It would be quite awesome, I think.

I can definitely imagine playing a mario game where you spend the whole game inside of mario, looking through his eyes at the mushroom kingdom.

That was not a good showcase for the Oculus rift. Jimmy just put it on his head, said wow and took it off after a bit.

Honestly, he seemed more excited throwing ninja stars with the WiiU gamepad.
