SNES Game Collecting (Tips, discussion, and info for like minded collectors)

Can the Japanese version of Mystical Ninja (Ganbare Goemon: Yukihime Kyuushutsu Emaki) be played decently without knowing any Japanese? I remember playing my friends PAL version and didn't need to do any (or much) reading but I didn't get very far.

Also same question about any of the other Goemon games on the SNES. Thanks :)

EDIT: Also, are there any good adapters out there to play Super Famicom games on a PAL SNES? I've seen ones for NTSC games but not Japanese ones.

My girlfriend got me an SNES for christmas and the last month or so I've been hunting down games for it. Had one when I was a kid but my sister has it now and all the games, but it's ok.

I've got 29 games now and it's pretty much all I've been playing. My favorite system.

Fuck it, here's what I've acquired the last month:

Super Mario All Stars
Mario Kart
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Super Castlevania 4
Final Fantasy 3
Tetris Attack
U.N. Squadron
Darius Twin
Super Ghoul's n Ghosts
Super Smash TV
Super Punch Out
Starfox
Donkey Kong Country
Donkey Kong Country 2
Super R-Type
Gradius III
Super Turrican
Contra III
Axelay
Mystical Ninja
The Peace Keepers (this is a stinker, not as good as I remember it, there's no fucking music?)
Gunforce
Mega Man X
Bust-A-Move
Final Fight
Super Metroid
NBA Jam TE
Tecmo Super Bowl 3 (should have got the first one. this has horrible bugs and no music)
Street Fighter II

Pretty good set, but had no idea Tecmo Super Bowl 3 was bad. Definitely gonna stay away from Peacekeepers. What kinda beat em up has no music?

I think you should be alright. Might need a faq here and there, but they seem fairly actiony and light on RPG elements. Now the first N64 game might be different.

The game play in TSB3 is great but I don't like that there is no music when you're actually running plays. Also there is a horrible bug that I've encountered 3 times in like 7 games (I'm playing through a season). Sometimes in the 4th quarter near the end of the game the CPU will get stuck in this endless loop when choosing a two point conversion and there's nothing you can do except turn the system off. It's a real buzz kill. Luckily I didn't pay much and I'll probably just get the first one now.

The Peace Keepers was a bit pricey at $20 and and it really is my worst buy. The game plays alright but it feels so weird playing while there is like dead silence in the background. Usually it's not even dead silence but this droning noise that sounds like you're in a boiler room or something.

The worst thing is when people that try to "Killer Instinct" their games with a black sharpie. My copy of Contra III was like that until I found a respectable cart.

I also hate when people write their names on the front labels of carts. But my friend rescued my original copy of Goldeneye from some random party when he saw my name written over it. I had lost it for like four years.

Funny enough, when I took pictures of my games collection, I saw that two of the games had the same name. I had bought these games from swap meets over a year apart. Strange coincidence.

Yeah the name thing drives me nuts too. Funny you mentioned people that tried to Killer Instinct their games, as I mentioned a copy of Great Circus Mystery earlier in this thread that I bought. Looks like that owner tried to pull that move with it and then gave up. This is what I bought:

Ended up getting it looking like this (excuse my poor lighting)

P2060001_zps8914b287.jpg

There is only a tiny bit of marker in the corners that is left. I tried to pretty hard, but I can't seem to get it. Still, was able to get it for 2 bucks, which is how much that guy should be selling his Mega Man X for.

Oh and about the cart swapping, I mentioned my Super Adventure Island. Decided to check it out and see what was wrong.

P2060003_zps60aeede8.jpg

Now that I'm looking at it, I believe this must have gotten a swapped back. What sucks most about the break is that it's the plastic tab which is part of the front plastic. The back part, with that dreadfully ruined sticker, is also a totally different color than the front. I know these games have been known to change color, but is it common for the carts to change to two different shades like that? It's hard to tell in the picture, but the back is much more yellow. I'm almost wondering if this was shattered somehow which broke the tab and possible ruined the original back. Either way, it blows because both sides are damaged. Still, the back could use a new cover even if I can't fix the front.

Dry erase marker will take it out

I should totally get one of those, I could finish cleaning the Mickey game with it. Thanks.

The Peace Keepers (this is a stinker, not as good as I remember it, there's no fucking music?)
This is entirely incorrect. The Peace Keepers does have music, and it's a pretty interesting game with some features you won't find in any other SNES beat 'em ups. First, it's got a four player versus mode. Unfortunately the main game is two player only, but still, this is the only SNES beat 'em up which supports more than two players in any capacity, and anyway no home console beat 'em up on any system before the PS2 has a 4-player main game mode, oddly enough. Of course once it finally happened, and we got a 4-player home beat 'em up, nobody cared because the genre was pretty much dead, but it's true -- no home system beat 'em up from before the PS2 has a 3+ player mode in the main game (ie not in a fighting mode, like The Peace Keepers or Guardian Heroes for Saturn).

Second, the game has branching paths and multiple endings. Try looking for that in most any other SNES beat 'em up! There are 4-5 characters to choose from, too. Good stuff. The game is pretty hard, but decently fun. I kind of wish you got more continues, but oh well... at least there are options. And on that note...

As for the music, what you need to do is go into the options menu and change the sound option to Music. See, this game has two audio track options -- either environmental sound only, so you hear things like the waterfall running, etc., or music only, so you hear music, but not the environmental sound. I like both tracks, but there are some areas where there's no environmental audio, which is kind of boring sounding, so the music track probably is better overall, though those silent waterfalls are odd. Yeah, it's pretty lame that the game doesn't support both at the same time, but yes, there is most assuredly a soundtrack in the game. The environmental sound option is on by default, so you'll need to switch to Music to hear it.

Overall there are better SNES beat 'em ups, but still, The Peace Keepers is a decently good game with some unique features. The game is the third in a series; in the US all three titles were released, but each has a different name. The first one is Rival Turf, the second is Brawl Bros., and the third is The Peace Keepers. This last one is the best of the three for sure.

The Goemon games DEFINITELY need walkthroughs to be played in English. The games have town-exploration elements where you have to wander around town, talking to people, etc., and if you can't read the language, it'll get quite annoying. Either play it in English, or use a guide while playing, and know that you're missing out on part of the fun, because the scripts in these games are always good stuff.

On that note, yes, I don't care what the reasons are, it's a tragedy that the second through fourth SNES Goemon games STILL don't have translation patches! I want those, badly...

I have a game that I've owned since childhood that has half discolored. Different batches of plastic in manufacturing.

What gets me are those big ass foil void stickers on games. You can clean them off with alot of work and some magic erasers...but when they put it right on the front label?

Yeah, like a marker for a dry erase board?

I've cleaned the outside of carts with solvents like bestine and turpentine from the art & hobby store.

Just tried it. Worked great.

Before:

After:

It took like five goes to get it completely gone, so I can't imagine doing it to anything bigger. But, it does work. Just covered the initials, wiped away, rinse and repeat until totally gone.

Wow thanks for the info. I really didn't realize the music was turned off by default. As I said I thought the gameplay was good so now I'll definetly try it again with a friend. Love the multiplayer options.

I'm not sure about solvents or dry erase markers, but something that definately works are Mr. Clean magic erasers. To demonstrate this I recently defaced an N64 cart with a sharpie and gave it some time to dry.

Here's what it looked like before:
https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/538323_530435833663969_815350923_n.jpg

And after:

I know the sharpie wasn't on for long, but this is the same method that I use to clean up all my carts, some of which have sharpie that could easily be 10-15+ years old, and they look literally brand new after the magic eraser and some good old elbow grease.

The magic erasers work great, but keep in mind, that they're essentially extremely fine abrasive pads. It'll remove some of the texture of the carts.

Not a big deal for some, but something to keep in mind.

Yup, I tell people it's basically wet sanding with fine sand paper. I actually only use it a last resort, because it can make things look weird in direct light.

Yeah definitely have to be careful with them. Very effective, but also very abrasive.

I might go after the original Pilotwings. Had tons of fun with the 3DS game, and looking at a review...I had no idea the instructors get kidnapped midway through the game and you have to go on a rescue mission. The awesome soundtrack helps.

Would have been nice if something like that happened in the 3DS game.

Also anyone know of any hidden gems or just slightly obscure games as far as platformers, RPGs, or shooters go? Both SNES and Super Famicom are ok.

Very cool thread, the Snes is the bane of my collecting existence by far, but also my favorite console. I estimate I will spend at least 5k on finishing it -_-

Here are 2 recent hauls I got that included snes stuff.

I have to put a stop on collecting for a couple months but I did order one more lot that had around 8 snes titles in it, so slowly but surely I am building a pretty competent library. I've had good luck bartering with some gaf people as well as a couple other small forums.

I'd like to suggest Demon's Crest, but apparently word's gotten out on its awesomeness in recent years. I swear I hadn't met another person who'd heard of it until 2007! I've gotten into SFC games recently and found a number of good ones:

Majuu Ou (King of Demons)
Cyber Knight I/II
Monstania
Slayers (surprisingly ok, and I'm not even a fan of the show)
The Violinist of Hamelin
Umihara Kawase
The Adventure of Hourai High School
Mickey and Donald - Magical Adventure 3

King of Demons, Umihara, and Magical Adventure can be easily played without knowledge of Japanese. With the others, there are translations available to follow along. Until recently I really had no idea of the amount of fantastic games that were never localized in the day. We seem to put games like FFVI and Chrono Trigger on pedestals, but there's certainly a few more that rival them, we just never got em'.

Knew about Demon's Crest (had that back in the day...but wow has the price gone up) and Majuu Ou (seems pretty cool, and i'm definitely getting those two at some point) but the rest are new to me. Had no idea there was a 3rd Magical Quest (or even 2nd for that matter).

Surprised at the price of some though, especially since most Super Famicom games usually arent that expensive.

Picked up a few games today

Chrono Trigger - $59
Super Punch-Out - $10
Mystical Ninja - $20
Pilot Wings - $5
Illusion of Gaia (CIB) - $30

Sorry for the lack of pics but I'll have some as soon as possible.

Still on the hunt for Demon's Crest, Wild Guns, and both Castlevania games. What's the cheapest do you guys think I can get Secret of Mana?

If you like RPGs you should be really looking at Terranigma as it is one of the best RPGs on the console. There's no US version though so that would be a problem if you have a US console.

Game doesn't come cheap though - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Terranig...Games&hash=item417075691f&_uhb=1#ht_991wt_912

I had a copy myself that went for about $150 a fair while ago.

I want Demon's Crest very badly, but I think my next purchase will probably be Castlevania IV. I mean, how can you have a SNES collection and not have that game?

Maybe I'll splurge on a copy of Demon's Crest when I get my tax refund. (Assuming I do get a tax refund.)

I have a really good SNES collection, and I don't have that game (so of course it makes it feel like a really shitty SNES collection ;)

I'll have to try that. I never thought to try a plain old pencil eraser.

You're lucky your friend had that box man. Super Mario RPG is currently hitting ridiculous prices and only getting higher. Especially CIB. Do you have the manual?

Also, in some cases, that "Magic Eraser" (Mr Clean, I think) really removes deep stains, scratches, and other blemishes. It's less useful with textured plastic but can definitely save the day in some cases.

Also, for console cleaning, Armorall works wonders. I used it on a Genesis and it looked brand new in the end.

Wow, you can use those erasers for permanent marker? Shit. Learning all sorts of good tips in here.

I noticed the Magic Eraser also can ruin the texture of the karts, but I kind of assumed that was the only way to deal with markers on these games. Cool to know that dry erase markers and erasers work too. I'll be sure to try those methods before hitting games with the magic eraser in the future.

Wild Guns seems pretty pricey. I saw it at a second hand store they were asking $125 O_O

I like that game but not for that price.

SoM I have been seeing for $40 so it's not too bad.

I've never fucking understood why people did this. Why do you need to write your name on shit? Your friends are still gonna steal that shit when you aren't looking. It's a slightly more elegant version of dogs pissing on their turf.

Good luck. I see it go for like $150+ to $200+ on eBay alone.
I'm really hoping to find it at a thrift store or flea market. I'm guessing they didn't print many copies so it'll definitely be a good challenge.

Good thing Secret of Evermore seems to still be reasonably priced at least on ebay. Going to try to get that sooner rather than later. I had bought it back when it first came out, finished it, and though it was a decent game (even if it wasn't Seiken Densetsu 3).

Especially something like Mario RPG. Yeah I don't get how it stops someone from taking it. I figured it was a way to differentiate copies. "Dude, is that your copy of Mario RPG or mine?! I don't know man. I just don't know"

I bet it might more deal with not getting the cart confused with your friend's copy. I did this slightly during college with my N64 carts so my games wouldn't be confused with my roommates.

Probably. Nobody wants to lose their save slots.
We were taught as kids too to put our names on things that were valuable. That kid's parents probably told him to do so.
