I like your crappy makeshift end labels. I do the exact same thing with n64 carts.
I started doing that, but then I got lazy and stopped half through. Also some fell off and I haven't bothered to replace them.
I got a PAL SNES that's modded to play NTSC games for about 60 euros on ebay about a month ago.

does it ever take anyone several tries before the snes outputs anything on the tv? I'm wondering if it's a problem with my console or my games. I'm looking into buying a new snes pretty soon

Nope. Only problems I've ever had are if a game needs cleaned. I clean every new game I get before putting it in.

I have that issue with my N64 a lot. Some SNES games slightly. I really really really wish these old systems would output something with no cart in the system (like a generic no cart display message). Cause without it displaying anything, makes it hard to determine if it's the cart or the system.
For the most part, I think it's the carts. As some of my N64 games start up immediately with no issue, and others take like 5 minutes to get it working..
If I put the cartridges in too forcefully, sometimes this happens to me. Usually pulling up on the cart slightly and moving it up about 1/16" fixes it nearly 100% of the time.
It almost never happens on my wife's system. I cut the tabs out of mine to play SFC games, so that could possibly have something to do with it.

Yeah, I do that with N64 carts as well, although I use a labelmaker so that it doesn't look quite so crappy.

Fuck no to that spraying the whole cart. Getting the sticker wet could be bad. Probably be okay if you get it dry quickly, but I still wouldn't unless it's real bad or something.
I use 50/50 rubbing alcohol/water and qtips. I usually just do the contacts, but I go up and down, not side to side like that video shows. Seems to work better. If the cart itself is dirty, I will clean it also. But, I'm still super careful and use qtips to do spot cleaning, not just hose and scrub the whole cart.
That's pretty similar to how I clean mine. I use turpentine or bestine with a rag in place of the magic eraser and cleaner. They are both good for getting stickers off of disc-based game cases as well.
A stash of alcohol and q-tips is a staple for any retro gaming setup, especially if you have an NES.

I've never cleaned the console itself. I have done the top of game genies though. It's a bitch. I took a qtip with the alcohol on it and kind of scrubbed the top of the contacts (since you're not getting the qtip down there). Then I took a piece of computer paper and wrapped it around a piece of cardboard and just kind of shoved that down in there and scrubbed up and down again. I'd be careful, but it worked for me. I could see the grime coming off and the game genie started working.
I assume you could do the same thing to the system. Make sure it's unplugged, and make sure it's dry before you try to use it again. If you have a blow dryer that can just blow air (not heat) I'd blow that in there to get it to dry.
Maybe someone else has a better idea.

I just gave my snes a thorough cleaning. Works great now.
I wrapped a credit card with an old thin tshirt and dipped it in alcohol. I stuck it in between the pins a few times, and dried it off the same way

Just pulled out my collection really quick so sorry for the shitty pics. I'll take better photos later on once I get a few more additions to my collection.

Yeah, Genesis stuff is dirt cheap compared to SNES. Which is probably a good thing or I'd be tempted to sell all my shit for SNES/NES money.
Here's my modest Geni collection. Phantasy Star and Shining Force are top on my list of things to get:
Cyborg Justice is the fucking shit. Anyone who hasn't played it, get it now. You are a robot, who can rip the arms/weapons off other robots and attach them to yourself. It's awesome.

I haven't been able to find any good finds at the thrift stores in a while...I think the employees there have wised up and trade in all the good stuff before anyone else can get to it...ugh. Can't wait until it's summer here, I can go to the flea market on Sundays and have better luck.

Yeah. I'm happy. Guys prices are kind of all over the place. They go from fairly priced like these MMX's, to stupid like $60 for Secret of Mana. He's worth watching apparently though. Maybe he'll throw up a decently priced MMX3 since he put up 2 X's and an X2 today.

Went to a flea market for the first time about a mile from my mouse. Got all of this for $100 even. Seems like a great deal considering systems appear to be going for $60ish by themselves, and the games aren't throw-aways. All look like they're in excellent condition too.
I've had two issues though:
DKC2 when I booted it up for the first time I had a strange error message right off the bat where it had Diddy and Dixie in the background and a message along the lines of "This software is not authorized to be played on a device that can reproduce/copy ... something something illegal...". I blew in it and put it back in and it started up fine. Probably just dirty and misread the system somehow?
Also Yoshi's Island looks terrible on my LCD (yeah I need a CRT). I'm using composite but have an S-Video cable on order and plan on getting a CRT when I get more space, but Yoshi's Island was EXTREMELY poor quality with very wavy lines all over the place, which my other cartridges did not suffer from.
Pic doesn't really do it justice. The waves you can see in the bottom right really stand out across the entire screen, rippling across.
On a personal note, the SNES was my favorite system as a child and a few years back I sold off most of my SNES stuff because I was just moving the big brown box from closest to closet each time I moved. I checked my eBay auctions from about 2 years ago... Secret of Mana I sold for $17, SCIV for $15, MMX for $12....
Time to start from square one! I plan on getting some of those media storage cases and using thecoverproject as I slowly build up a collection of everything worth owning.

You guys see the prices on wild guns recently? Easily $150-$200. CRAZY. In terms of good, rare games on the system, I only need that, Lufia, Lufia 2 and Breath of Fire. Going to be awhile. Maybe I'll ask for one for my 33rd birthday in March.

Yeah all Japanese consoles have short leads, and this no joke, its because they are said to have small houses. The PAL version of the pad has the same lead length as the US pad.
Well today was a bust. I went way up to the Cypress Swap Meet (So-Cal) as well as some game stores. These are the games I didn't get.
PTO-II (Cart only) $20 Cypress reseller. These guys are the worst so I passed in a heartbeat.
Mickey Mouse Castle of Illusion (Genesis: Complete in Clamshell) $15 A good find but I wasn't in the mood for Genesis Games. Interestingly, they also had Intelligent Qube for the PS1 for $59
Cybernator (CIB very mint) $29 Video Game Geeks - Anaheim. A nice store and a pretty good find. I wish I hadn't passed on this despite the fact that eBay would be a lot less.
Breath of Fire (CIB super mint) $75 Phat Collectables - Anaheim. On my watch list but the price was insane.
Act Raiser - (CIB decent) $40 Phat Collectables - Once again, way too expensive. I see this game go for less than $10 on eBay. A $30 premium for a bent box is too much.
I feel the need to go on eBay and get something, but I'm moving in a week and would fear not getting it.

Just get a controller extension. I've got a couple and use 'em with my japanese pad as well with my ascii pad. Speaking of ascii pad, I'm on the opinion this is the best third party controller EVER developed. It not only feels great, but looks fantastic and has turbo buttons.

Yeah, the Ascii pad led me to believe that third party controllers in general were good. This was not the case.
That pad was pretty sweet... a solid alternative to Ninty's controller, though I do prefer the real deal.

Totally understand your preference to use an original - I'm of the same ilk. However, this was the first controller I ever used that was indistinguishable from the original. I got lucky a few years ago and bought one brand new for $15.
