Former Gearbox dev: "We only did MP-portion of Aliens!". SEGA: "NOPE"

Poor TimeGate, made one of the greatest strategy games of all time and in the past couple years they've been relegated to making mediocre games for other people's shooter franchises, which they're obviously not very good at, or doing thankless contract work. :/

Maybe they should do a kickstarter for another Kohan. It just doesn't seem like FPS are working out for them and maybe they should return to their roots.

Yeah, I don't know why they didn't do it. Or just made it on their own..I mean they've selfpublished the second Section8, so they do seem to be in decent position fiscally.

Also..Sega just confirmed it's merely Gearbox trying to shift the blame:

Perhaps SEGA was not aware that Gearbox outsourced the Single Player and is only now hearing of it, and therefore believing it to be false...

I do sense that this situation may be dragged into court at some point...it feels like something fishy went on here.

Im starting to dislike gearbox.

I'm just mad that I was led to believe this was going to be a great game.

At the very least, I'm certainly not trusting anything Gearbox puts out in the future.

Randy Pitchford implied in his discussion with IGN that Gearbox did the brunt of the work for the game. I don't know what the hell that "ex-Gearbox" developer was on.

I think it's obvious Gearbox screwed Sega over by putting all their time and money into the Borderlands series, and stringing the Aliens game along until they had no choice but to ship something.

Yep this seems to be the case. Silicon Knights anyone?

Normally I don't care about the health of corporations, but I legitimately feel bad for Sega and how they're probably going to take the hit from this project as a commercial failure.

It definitely reminds me of a Silicon Knights / Free Radical -esque situation.

I think it's going to be an RE:ORC situation. It won't be regarded well, but the game will make a return for Sega. It's been #1 on the Steam list for the past couple days, and the console versions are probably doing more.

This is an interesting twist. Wonder if anyone will press Gearbox on why they were either not being honest or stretching the truth.

Gearbox just stfu! You guys first hyped up Duke Nukem which turned out to be utter garbage and then you really hyped this garbage up esoecially with the wiiu crowd and now you want to disassociate yourselves with the game? The worst ppl are the fans that buy into the whole "Oh we only did mp" Some of you ppl are gullible as hell and will believe anything a dev says. Gearbox had years working in conjunction with others on this on both, mp and sp and they, hyped this game up Like no tomorrow. They made this trash and get fully blamed.

I am going to go out on a limb and assume Gearbox was really the only party responsible for this disaster zone unless they can make a compelling case that Sega did not give them enough time and money (lol).

I'm beginning to feel this is heading into very questionable territory, I wouldn't be surprised by a lawsuit at this point.

For once I am happy I had no personal investment in a game that is a failure and can just watch the trainwreck from the sidelines. I honestly didn't even know the game was out right now

Just getting weirder and weirder. I'm not upset with my purchase but Gearbox is losing any and all respect I may have had for them if all this lying, false promises and general shaddyness is true.

That makes a lot of sense when you put it that way. Maybe it's a more common practice in the industry than I thought.

I don't really care for gearbox and it is beyond shitty of them if they really did give this game the shaft. Sega doesn't need this ;_;

Considering they were splitting resources between Borderlands 2, BiA: Furious 4, and Aliens, it doesn't come as a surprise that they skimped out on Aliens.

They likely put the bulk of their resources into finishing Borderlands 2 at the end of last year, then spent the next four months desperately trying to make Aliens a complete product. SEGA definitely has a case if they decided to pursue this in court.

I'm assuming that Sega let Gearbox handle development without adequate milestones or checkups. Sega found out too late that Gearbox had fucked development up severely...and decided it was better to force the game out and try and make some profit...than to cut their losses and write the whole project off.

Regardless, we're not going to ever see another Sega / Gearbox collaboration. This game reeks of extremely troubled development.

This whole thing seems to reek of poor management. If you're going to split development between several teams you have to make sure there is ample communication between them.

Hahaha....

Man this game really feels like Too Human all over again.

"Gearbox taking blame from Sega because entitled fans won't buy 10/10 Aliens title" is more along the lines of what I expect the games journalists to do.

At first read I thought yo'd forgotten to use the word 'entitled', now I see that all was good. Bonus lulz, when Forbes was the only news site calling them out on bullshit, so they all started banding together to shit on the guys at Forbes.

Truly pathetic.

Wow, I didn't know this Aliens game was going to be such a trainwreck. Was tempted to pick up the Wii version somewhere down the line but after seeing some very bad gameplay videos and all these awful impressions I think I'll pass.

Dang, Samba de Amigo was one of my favorite Wii games.

The best part about the Forbes callout is that after one editor goes after Gearbox another Forbes editor posts her 8/10 ACM review. Do people not communicate at all?

Gearbox sure knows how to flush goodwill down the drain...

Why did they take it on if they couldnt do it? So fishy.

C'mon, son, don't be quite so misanthropic. At least everyone is tearing A:CM a new one.

EDIT - other than EGM, wow. A 90? Yeesh.

Aliens was one of the big four franchises Sega said it was going to focus on half a year ago. Ouch.

I still remember when Samba was just a month or two from store shelves, and Nintendo went, "Surprise! MotionPlus!" Probably way too late to add to the game, which was slammed for the tracking not being accurate enough. (They could have patched it in, but you know... Wii.) Cammie had the nerve to suggest, even before the first version was released, that they (and other coming soon games) could do "rapid second versions." Yes, tell people to wait for the second version of a game, so they don't buy the first one.

TimeGate, really? Huh. The Section 8 Prejudice campaign was actually pretty fun I thought. Still, this does explain some things.

I actually liked the Section 8 series myself. I mainly just liked how it reminded me of the Tribes series. Polishing games is definitely not one of their strengths though, which is weird for someone as mediocre as them to handle a game as hyped as this. Sounds like they blew their budget designing the game and took the cheapest route to put it on shelves.

Yeah, from what I'm reading here, fuck gearbox for shitting out a half assed game. They're better than this.

I let them slide after Duke Nukem Forever because that was 3DR's game, but the fact that they're shitting on a good franchise and simultaneously shitting on one of the few good publishers in the industry, plus the fact that they obviously focused more on Borderlands (which they own the IP of and make more money on than most people realize) is frankly straight up dickish of them.
