They should put the sticks on the back. Asymmetrically.

The placement is also a huge issue.

I can't imagine being able to comfortably use the track pad unless you set the controller down.

Um your thumbs can reach that space quiet easily. I feel deja vu with the "well if they place icons on the vita screen (all the way to left/right edge), my thumb wont reach" stuff.

Take your DS3 right now, and slide your thumb around the PS Button area. It will be fine. This is what I had imagined it would be like and Im glad Sony went this way.

I..don't know how that means it's the industry standard.

Besides the Wii U, I think Sony is the only one that has stuck with the asymmetrical design over the past 15 years. Granted, not many consoles have come out since then.

I was just mentioning that most systems outside of Sony have not been symmetrical.

Either way, it's ALL preference. There is no industry standard.

Bullshit. It is the same place as Start and Select which are easily achievable.

You don't have to slide your fingers on the stat and slect buttons which you presumably will do with this unless they literally use to just make you press touch buttons that could be done anywhere else.

Edit: Oh jeez at some of the reactions in here.

This is why the Wii U GamePad sticks are at the top of the controller.

I said the same in a thread a while back. If you are going to be using the thumbs to interact with the touch pad, the sticks need to be on top.
It could be possible that the sticks are quite shallow and may not be that much of an issue.
It could also be that the touch pad isn't really designed to be used in game except in menus or similar activities. I honestly don't see how a touch pad could be of any real benefit during live gameplay.

People said that?

I have no problem reaching the change weapon icons in AC3 Liberation.

What are you talking about?

Nintendo and Sony have done symmetrical sticks for everything in the last 6 years. MS is alone on this.

You don't press start by moving over analogue stick. You press it above sticks and whole area is easily achievable.

In shame at my fellow gamers I already hang my head in shame sir. Will you not see my point of view? I have clearly thought too much of you fine fellows of Gaf for not being able to see what it is that lies beneath the surface of this game they are playing with you. No, mock me if you will fellow gamers but remember this moment you will.

You're trying too hard.

Good point. Should be interesting to see.

My guess is that there will be unique features in various versions of multiplatform games early on (first 2 years or so) but then everything will become pretty much the same.

I think there is too much money to be lost now. I think even if you had a controller with one big fat red button and a trackball, devs would make it work. Games are too expensive to make for them to be that picky about controllers.

Speaker on the controller is cool, just so long as it doesn't sound like the wii one.

I would hope it is a combination of both preferably. There is no real benefit having a speaker there; a mic would be great and the the headphone socket for chat audio.

I really hope the final controller doesn't have a large light on it like that. I like to game in a dark room and I'd find that very distracting. I'm sure there would be an option to turn it off though.

Can we all stop bitching about the stick placement? The different ways aren't better or worse, they're just different. As someone who has a PS3 and 360, it took me like an hour to get accustomed to using the sticks and I didn't feel like it was worse except for the fact that they were too close.

They're both fine, you just have to get used to them.

Now let's figure out what the fuck those cameras are doing built into the dev kit!

Why not?

Edit.. I'm an idiot. You're that, that would be beyond stupid.

Because only 5% of people put their console in some good place for psEye camera position. Most of people even hides their console or put it in such way that camera simply won't work.

And no most people don't have good place to put console in good position for PsEye.

You're right, they might get cold feet and make this one terrible instead of great just like they did with the boomerang. They had sound ergonomics and they threw them away.

The boomerang is a horrible controller design, those slanted shoulder buttons look disgusting. I've never had a problem with a DualShock, nothing about it feels unnatural. But I feel the same way about the 360 controller. I don't think the symmetry or asymmetry of either detracts or adds anything special. The only reason I prefer the 360 controller is the triggers and a slightly heavier feel.

Again, its only a devkit. Those look like cameras, but doesn't mean at all that the retail hardware will have it built into the box.

Yes people will complain about everything without really thinking about it. If I remember correctly it was about COD Vita (before it was released/rumored etc) that if they placed the knife or run Icons along the edge of the screen, your thumb wouldnt reach the said Icons. In reality, your thumbs are literally mm away from the screen at all times. So it would work. (nd it worked in Resistance Vita, havent played CODshitty Vita version)

Quick FYI but asymmetry and "not symmetry" are the same thing. The Dual Shock isn't asymmetrical, it's symmetrical.

I expect the light to fade away soonish on non-motion/party games to save battery life (or whatever the developer choses really).

But have you actually held one in your hand?
