At first I was doubtful wether a touchpad would contribute to a better gaming experience. After doing some thinking I suppose it can be useful, you could use it to switch weapons, rotate/zoom maps, painting emblems and shit... We'll see.

I'm sad that it is said to NOT be a screen though. Lack of good text input is something that has always kept consoles from being a good machine for multiplayer or surfing the web. If I have to type in a long web adress using the ps4 on-screen keyboard one more time... I'm gonna explodez!

A fully functioning touch screen on the controller? I hope they have a good battery solution in place that doesn't require constant charging like the Wii U gamepad.

If it had a screen you would know by now as it affects many aspects of development and hardware (unlike a touchpad).

So ugly... and I'm not sure the touchpad will be a really good thing. On my PS Vita I hate almost every implementation of the rear touchpad controls I've tested :/

I hope we will see games (in game footage) during the next Sony event :)

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Weird we have 2 almost opposites on the touch rumour. I guess it would be greedy to want both screen and multi. Mainly want multi because that opens up two finger gesture swipes etc over just poking and prodding.

Snagged from the "PlayStation 4 will stream PS3 games"-thread, confirming the touchpad. The source is the Wall Street Journal.

The streaming technology is one of the new features and enhancements expected to be offered with the new console, which Sony plans to unveil at an event in New York. Sony's new PlayStation, for example, may control the action with higher fidelity cameras for its "Move" motion-sensing technology and touch-sensing pads on new controllers, according to people who have seen and been briefed on the devices.

What I found weird is that the supposed "share" button above the d-pad CLEARLY has an opposite button above the 4 PS buttons, but barely any of the game journalists who've speculated on it even mention it, even two days later. I think its likely to be Start and Select, as others have said.

Actually, VGleaks mentioned 'share' and 'options' buttons. See the OP.

Touchpad just seems so utterly useless at such a small scale and in that position. Im not going to use it to switch weapons, im not going to use it to swipe my knife, and i dont want gimmicky on screen prompts telling me to swipe to kill a guy.
Only thing that seems useful is using it as a mouse while browsing a browser. Seems hardly worth distorting the controller to put that in.

Exactly.

I'm going to put my trust in Sony's competence now. Everything about the PS4 seems to be the right choices, so an LCD touchscreen in the controller for manipulating inventories, or at the very least accessing the Playstation Menu, would be the most apt avenue to pursue.

do we know what the triggers are like? Are they actual triggers or are they like buttons from the DS2? Or are they that abomination that was on the DS3?

Capacitive screen with iPhone style keyboard, please. It's ubearable to use the on screen keyboard for even the most basic typing (PSN account password and such). The rest of it is fine, and looks a bit spimplified copared to DS3. Hoping they don't screw up the things that made DS3 good - pressure sensitive face buttons and the triggers that don't hurt your index fingers.

I believe typing will be quite good with a touchpad that clicks.

Like the Wii and Wiimote you have a keyboard displayed on the TV and the button that's aimed at will scale up. The capacitive touchpad should offer the same and you glide over the buttons using your finger and click in when the right button is scaled up. The glide pointer should also always appear relative to where you land your finger on the pad surface.

Wouldn't it be possible to use an inexpensive monochrome screen with a blue back light, like these GIFs being tossed around?

they could try using PMOLED

I'm not an expert in the field by any means, so I had to google that, but apart from a couple of setbacks (like the reportedly short lifetime), this sounds like a good option.

In my opinion, a monochrome screen would do just fine when it comes to functionality, and it would surely keep the costs at a minimum as far as including a screen is concerned.

I'd even argue that having this black and blue screen we've been seeing in these GAF mock-ups is more stylish than having a full colour screen, but that's just my take on it.

So thats a microphone and not a speaker? I don't care how good your audio processing is all people are going to hear is CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK.

It's good that you don't care, as directional microphones don't give a fuck either.

Seriously, people in this thread have some weird ideas about mics.

You know, looking at the Dualshock 4 some more, I'm really starting to like it. Honestly it gives me this feel of being more heavy duty than the DS3. It looks nice and weighty, and sturdy.

And on the off chance there's cameras under that surface, you'll be able to just hover and tap for the same result.
Either way it should allow for very nice txt input once you've adjusted to the virtual thumb pointer.

Sounds terrible. Not surprised, but sounds terrible. Touchpad sounded too good to be true.

EDIT: Unless those are camera trackers and you could use your thumb to still control aiming in a FPS game. Kind of like a mini pointer... but better. Don't see how that's remotlely possible, though. There's no indication those are cameras. And wouldn't you need some kind of light on your thumb for the camera to track? I just don't see how this is realistic.

100% agree. The big cost is the "touch" element, the PMOLED is actually fairly cheap to produce. Imagine apps running your big screen, with touch screen elements on your controllre.
