In my 18 years of gaming, I've never played a Sony system. Could PS4 still be for me?

GAF, my brother (/sister on occasion, probably), my trusted confidant, and my one-stop-shop for gaming advice since 2008... I come to you with an interesting situation I find myself in.

I received a Super Nintendo for Christmas in 1994, and have been gaming ever since. Nintendo was enough to fill my gaming needs until last gen, when it became clear that being a Wii-only owner was excluding me from at least 70% (if not a helluva lot more) of the best the industry was offering. Through the strong endorsements of most of my real life friends, I went with the Xbox 360. And I loved/still do love it (despite hating Microsoft for being a greedy asshole of a company, due to the combination of XLive Gold and me having have had to pay for three 360's due to two red rings.) At this point though, most of Microsoft's first party exclusives are franchises I could live without. Gears, Forza, and Halo are all well-made titles, but after the excessive milking they all went through I feel like I'm ready to FINALLY experience some games that are exclusively Sony's.

But that mindset has just formed recently, after reviewing the leaks from both systems. I was originally completely content to carry my XBL account over to Durango and stay a Microsoft customer, because despite how much the company has screwed me (and you) over, I've still had many quality gaming experiences with the 360. With this no second hand game proposition however, I am firmly out of Microsoft's territory. I mainly play single player games, and many SP titles this gen can be conquered in a weekend. Because of that, at least 60% of the 360 titles I've completed have been rentals, and it would be an incredibly unwise move for me, financially, to invest in Nextbox if rentals are truly to become a thing of the past.

But all I've known for the past 18 years is every Nintendo home-console, plus the 360. I'll save my thoughts on the Wii U for a time later on down the road, but suffice it to say that it definitely won't be the system to suit my needs this-gen until it has at least two or three years of strong first-party support behind it. I threw caution to the wind last gen when I bought a 360 with no previous experience with an Xbox, and it paid off. I'm hoping jumping into the PS4 might do the same.

So, I ask you all... how have Sony systems traditionally compared vs. Microsoft or Nintendo offerings? Does Sony offer an experience that will feel distinctive to me compared to what I got from Microsoft, in the same way the Wii was a MASSIVELY different experience than what I got from the 360 (I doubt it, because both Sony and Microsoft get very similar genres and the same AAA multiplat games)? Is anyone else that was on the 360 train last gen thinking of jumping ship to the PS4 based on the current rumors and speculation?

There is such a huge pull for me to stay with what is familiar... I love the 360 controller, the interface of the machine (despite all of the bullshit ads), the 3rd party offerings that have left me with some of the best experiences in my entire gaming career, and achievements (which for some reason seem better than trophies, though that may not have any empirical weight behind it.) Yet I feel like Orbis may be a better machine for me (in almost every sense) than the Durango, and coupled with the fact that I may be able to both stream PS3 games, and play PS1 and 2 games on PS+, it feels like it might be the much wiser investment.

Obviously I will be watching the conference on the 20th with great intent, but despite what ends up being shown, dropping a substantial amount of money on a company I've had zero experience with before seems like a risky proposition.

I look forward to all of the Kaz gifs that will end up selling me on Orbis in this thread!

Man, you've missed out on some damn fine videogames.

I think the best thing to do is to track down a PS2 and some of its games (i think Ps2 has much better games than PS3 personally) and some PSone games too. PS3 has no backwards compatibility (except some launch ones) to PS2.

Ask this from yourself once PS4 has some games you're interested in.
I've never played on PS if i don't count playing my friends' PS consoles, but this is because there has never been a game on PS1/2/3 that would interest me. Doesn't stop me from thinking of getting PS4, if it has good, interesting games. Though i hate PS controller, need a third party one that is more like 360's.

I don't think the story of ps4 would be easy to follow if you didn't play the previous ones.

edit: bah someone else already made the joke

I'd be in the dick
I was a huge Nintendo guy before this gen. I bought a Wii on day 1 but I ended up getting a PS3 out of hype for MGS4 and was wary that the console wouldn't be for me.

Flash forward to today, I have 15 Wii games and over 100 retail PS3 games and 50+ digital PSN titles. Sony's first party output this gen has completely won me over and the 3rd party support has been strong. I think my tastes have just changed as I've gotten older and the combination of more interesting exclusives and not having to pay for online play has been very nice. I also have a fairly large blu-ray collection at this point because of it. I will be there day 1 for the PS4.

They aren't radically different. If you want something that will be a lot different, you should probably go for PC instead.

But anyway, I'm not sure there is a lot of room for discussion in what you posted. You like console games, you are sick of Microsoft and don't care about their exclusives, and the WiiU is not sufficient for you. Buy the PS4. Case closed.

I'm STILL trying to catch up on being kinda/sorta there for PS1/2... You're going to be playing past the Rapture with all those consoles missed out on.

You're really not missing anything these days. The PS1 and PS2 had a lot of good games. It ended there. I wouldn't waste the money on the PS3 if I were you. Maybe if it still had other OS, then perhaps.

I feel the same about Nintendo, but I also can't ever see myself without Nintendo console, it won't just feel right.

But yeah, PS have been my number 1 usage since ps2

Id say dont do it. Seeing how the PS / PS2 was by far the best 2 within the family.

You would be better off waiting to see what comes out down the line instead of jumping in blind.

You may as well wait to see how well old PSN games work on PS4. If it's all good get that and enjoy all 4 gens. It won't have every game ever but you don't have time for that anyways.

Seriously missing out brah.

PS1 and PS2 are where the classics were made. I can tell I'd be a really different person without all my MGS, my Crash Bandicoot, my Tekken, Syphon Filter, Spyro... sigh, too many to name.

I don't know if I should feel sorry for the OP or laugh at him. I even feel like abusing him for some reason.

What a sad, sad waste of 18 years.

I find that Sony is a great jump for a Nintendo Fan. Sony is quite a creative company with an excellent, ever-changing lineup of IPs. I grew up on Nintendo, went to Sony for PS2 and then went Wii/PS3. You really aren't going to find the same games anywhere else.

If rumors of the PS4 streaming BC are true, you could pick a few choice titles you missed out on too!

Maybe see if you can get a BC PS3? And go to town on that sucker. Who needs a PS4 when you have three generations worth of great exclusive libraries to peruse! (Or just get a PS3 and a PS2 and do the same -- it's probably cheaper)

Danny Dudekisser

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Fuckin'.... what?

How?

Get a PS2. Best system ever. It'll play PS1 games too. That's the second or third best system ever.

I'd recommend a PS4, but I know nothing about it. So, it's tough to say if it's for you. Nobody else knows, either, and if they say they do, they're lying.

its indeed cheaper to get a PS2 standalone and a PS3 slim. the bc PS3s were just the premium model of the launch units and were discontinued very fast.

Get a PS2 and play the classics you missed. PS3 is optional, especially if this PS4-PS3 streaming thing is true. By the time you get caught up, PS4 should be cheaper.

Those things are so damned expensive its not even funny. Go try and do a search and see for yourself. Over here (JPN) they go for about a grand is the prices Ive seen. Even used the prices would be stupid and then you have the problem of worrying how reliable it is. Seeing how sony does refurbs too no real assurance you get your system back if something does go wrong with it either.

Cheaper to just buy a PS2 and do it now before they go up in value further / become harder to find as they are out of production.

You can never tell. All is about games. If even only one game is ps4 exclusive you hell want to play it, you may eventually buy the system.
