Destiny Reveal Thread

Alright. I'm going to say it.

"ViDoc" is the dumbest fake word. It's like a hokey sci-fi term: "Dexter Nanofuchs plugged his zybernerve into the holonet. The usual lasersports and ViDocs were playing." Every time I see this awful word I want to call 911 to report a battery of language. Oh, it's a documentary? On video? Well stick me in a MJOLNIR suit and call me Sally, I couldn't have guessed.

Bit late, but...

"ViDoc is actually an amalgamation of three terms: visual, informational, and documentation. It’s definitely not an industry term that we would expect you to be familiar with. In fact, we kinda made it up."

The whole point of going dark is to create an even bigger splash when the game is finally revealed. Bungie went completely dark for over two years and the reveal seems to have generated just a whole lot of confusion regarding release dates, supported platforms, how the game actually plays, etc.

Sure, they gave us a lot of cool info regarding lore and setting and some major concepts, and I think everyone is agreed on the huge potential that this game has, but if the release is still so far off and the game can't even be properly shown, why didn't they just stay dark a little longer?

Also I think a solid CG trailer would have gone a whole lot farther in establishing the setting/general concept of the game than the vidoc they actually released.

If this is true, Bungie should have stayed dark a little longer, at least until they could give a release date.

Very few game announcements carry a release date with them.

I think Bungie just tried to do too much with this announcement, and in the end didn't provide enough in any one area. If it was an announcement, then it should have been a trailer (which seemed to have been cut into the vidoc). It was one part trailer, one part behind the scenes, and one part project overview/description.

I think they would have done better to have put together a solid trailer announcing the game and setting up the fiction. Then a vidoc talking about the studio and the ambition/scope behind the game. As is, it was neither a satisfying announcement nor a vidoc that offered much insight.

On the other hand, they can openly hire and recruit for it now without having to protect it from someone looking for a scoop.

They could have accomplished that goal through myriad combinations of trailer/vidoc/PR/interviews. The problem was in the mixed messaging and lack of clarity, not the medium.

well I hope the game eventually comes to WiiU, seems like a good fit for the gamepad, being an MMO of sorts. Maybe even some IR pointer controls. And Activision does like their games on all platforms, so here is hoping.

I honestly hope not. If Destiny goes to Nintendo, they'll probably say that the Traveler is a giant Yoshi Egg.

wat? what does this even mean?

do they fire bullet bills in COD on nintendo platforms?

I'm just being cheeky. I don't see Destiny working well on the WiiU for 3 reasons:

-Nintendo's controllers aren't exactly the best for FPS gaming (motion control notwithstanding)
-Nintendo's online support hasn't been the greatest (e.g. friend codes, lag)
-The graphics would feel outdated (considering how ambitious this game is already)

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I'm no expert on the WiiU.

EDIT: This looks interesting. If this "pro" controller is real, then I guess that's one problem we can scratch out.

I'm just being cheeky. I'd welcome Destiny to the Nintendo community, but I don't see it working well for 3 reasons:

-Nintendo's controllers aren't exactly the best for FPS gaming (motion control non-withstanding)

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I know very little about the WiiU.

Ok, fair enough

I would say most those things are incorrect now though...

-Gamepad has everything the traditional controller has, +optional touchscreen and motion controls. ( I think the toucshscreen would be great for an MMO type game and also some dual screen local coop play, if it exists)
If you dont like that there is also the classic controller pro, which is essentially a 360 gamepad, and then there is also the wiiremote+nunchuck combo.

-Friends codes dont exist any longer with wiiu, its a much better online system. The only thing really lacking is a cross game chat, or an OS level friend invite system.

-Well if the game is coming to 360/ps3 then not sure how the graphics will feel outdated, it would probabaly land somewhere in between the next gen systems and current gen, closer to the latter though.

Also some even prefer wiiu for the fps multiplatform experiences.

I read Polygon's preview first, then I jumped over to watch the vidoc.

I realized that the Vidoc just did a shitty job of explaining what makes the game interesting, outside of setting. The vidoc spends a minute talking about Iphone connectivity, but it spends almost 0 on the nature of a shared world, and instant co-op.

I wonder if it was supposed to be longer and was cut down? the whole Iphone angle is such a weird thing to focus on. It's a really cool feature, but it's something you talk about shortly before a project launches, not in the announcement.

Reading the preview got me hyped, watching the vidoc, you'd be excused from just thinking "ohh more halo."

That's actually fairly interesting. I'm glad they've done away with FC's - those were a nightmare. I guess I don't have much to worry about then!

I hope to see more from the WiiU this E3. Wasn't impressed by it last year but reading those at least has me somewhat optimistic. I still think it's a bit odd that they essentially smashed the DS and Wii together though, but that could make some games more interesting (Smash Bros)

From all the hype I expected to see way more of the game

So it’s a mmofps with some nice concept art?

Watching the GB video and nothing seems all that exciting

Beyond underwhelmed, I'm kind of angered that this industry keeps churning out big stupidly expensive shooters.

Random question: Are you the same ''A 3 legged Goat'' from Bnet? Used to love your post back before Reach released.

Looked pretty interesting as a game, but I *loved* what I saw of the setting and backstory. Something about the "Traveler" hovering over the planet and the story about how it saved the last of humanity at the cost of its (their?) own live really appealed to me.

And whether it's scifi or fantasy there's nothing I like more than post-post-apocalyptic stories, about reconstruction and hopefully eventual reclamation of lost technology/social advancement.

I probably wasn't going to get a next-gen console until next year anyway, so I'm kind of relieved. Wanted the game ASAP, but didn't really want to play it on PS3 or 360.

Guess it all works out.

Wonder if Bungie will somehow manage to fit Forge into the universe

I hope using the name in Halo doesn't rule out their using it in this or other future franchises. I'll take all the little Marathon references and carry-overs I can get.

This looks brilliant, I cannot wait for this to be released. I am a bit wary, that titanic sized games like these that in development for so long do have the potential to come crashing down too, if not given the right level of care and attention (I'm looking at you SWTOR..)

All the best to Bungie.

And seriously guys, those mini clips are of an unfinished and heavily unpolished game. Patience is a virtue.

P.S. Anyone where I can get some awesome wallpaper for this?

Between this, The Elder Scrolls Online, Crysis 3, and Borderlands 2, I don't see my social life improving very much. So so stoked. Destiny is such an amazing concept and I really hope Bungie properly executes it.

Totally agree. I love the "dying earth" sub genre of SF and it looks like Bungie has taken inspiration from those types of stories.

As much as I love Forge, I doubt they'll be able to do that judging from the scale of combat the game seems to be leaning towards. Theater is more likely to return I'd say...

Would be nice to have a Forge version for whatever they plan to do with PvP Arena type stuff. Its Bungie, so its bound to have TDM and CTF etc.

Well that depends. Are they learning towards the Arena style of competitive gameplay, or are they doing a hybrid of the dungeon/raid system where larger teams are involved? If so, I don't really anticipate anything the size of Midship or Warlock from Halo.

Hard to say. I can see them trying to do everything. Solo stuff, Raid stuff for co-op fun and some traditional halo style MP.

All of the above. There are competitive options as well as cooperative. Really, think about it like an MMO. PvE or PvP? Then throw some story in the middle. Take your pick.

it depends on how that pvp is structured. Jason Jones hates the slayer gametype, so i could see most of the PVP being worldbased and objective based.

I kinda do too to be honest. When the map is designed good, your team works together to hold choke points and advantages positions (not camp).

When it's bad, people just chase kills around for 12 odd minutes or grope a corner like spiders and sit there all game. Not exactly what I call "fun gameplay"

But every game involving defeating your enemies inevitably has a slayer/deathmatch/generic battle mode of some sorts. I just hope they make it more interesting than "Chase Kills to win!"

Would be cool to have some objective based gameplay that is just not "Blow this up" or "Defend this for X minutes." Maybe some way the objectives flow and evolve as players progress etc.

Essentially what Halo's Invasion/Dominion gametypes were, except something that is neither unnecessarily complex or dull.

Would be nice to have some dogfight gametypes with vehicles/spacecraft too. Mix things up a little...

the ship only acts as a player home, it's upgradable, but i doubt it'll be used for anything in the game like combat, but who knows.

Star Wars Battlefront style? Take off from the ground fight, fly into space and join the dogfight.

There seems to be a big emphasis on vehicles, I think they even mentioned customizable vehicles. So I'm hoping they play a big role across the game, for both transport and combat.
