Why did Sony drop the price of the vita? Hiroshi Kawano explains:

http://www.edge-online.com/news/scej-boss-explains-vita-price-cut/

Head of SCEJ Hiroshi Kawano has outlined the reasons for the recent Vita price cut in Japan, explaining to Japanese games magazine Famitsu that research conducted by the platform holder suggested that software and price were the Japanese public’s main concerns.

According to Polygon’s translation of the Famitsu article, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan president Hiroshi Kawano said: “The biggest reason [for the price drop] is that we simply want to have more people playing the PS Vita. Based on our research, there are two broad reasons why people who may want to try the Vita aren’t purchasing it. One, they want to wait until there’s a game they want to play on it. Two, the price is a little out of reach for them.”

Kawano also noted that after a year on sale, the handheld was behind projected sales figures. “Certainly, at the present time, maybe we’re a little behind the numbers we originally pictured. I feel we have a ways to go in terms of getting across the good traits of the PS Vita, along with everything the software has to offer. Also, I want to keep pushing for more games that people want to play, since like our research showed, that’s one thing blocking customers curious about the Vita from making a purchase.”

Sony will be increasingly “on the offensive” in pushing Vita this year, added Kawano. “We have the new price down; now it’s time for software. Just with what’s been announced so far, we’ll have more games coming out this year than last, and they’re being launched on a regular basis throughout the year. I think that’ll make users feel they’re always getting enough, and we’re prepared to push these titles as needed. We’re going to be actively on the offensive in 2013.”

not dead yet duckroll...

+ of course, he conveniently sidesteps the monhun issue

You're releasing a new console this year

You should probably focus more on that instead on a zombie handheld

Gaming on the iPad mini is excellent, despite having touch controls. In contrast, when I tried the Vita I immediately thought the screen was too small.
Make a big screen Vita and I will seriously consider it.

BWAHAHAHAHAHA understatement of the year

Wow, I could not disagree more. How big can it get before it's no longer a handheld?!

Their research indicates people buy a console if it has games they want and is within their price range? These guys are good, someone put them on researching a cure for cancer.

Alexios

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
I totally expected him to say they do it to clear stock and that they won't bother pushing it further, now with that bold red sentence I'm very confident about it, clearly they weren't trying before but now they finally will try, and succeed for sure!

I'm sure they will do better than so far eventually but they need to moneyhat more than Vita versions of PSP MonHun clones...

Glad to see Sony still showing some faith in this neat little system not
completely
abandoning it contrary to what some people around here seem to think.

In my local GAME stores they already have the Vita for 199€ for some time and I've been thinking of getting one.

The main reason is, my last portable console was a Silver Game Boy Pocket way back in the day. The fact I can use my account with PS Plus and the already Backlog waiting are great reasons for me, but still... I have already more games than time and with the PS4 I need to think if it's wise to have a Vita now.

I know in the end I may get one, it's just a matter of time or if I get a decent deal. Also, the price on memory cards is another concern of mine.

I love that they needed a study to figure this out.

I was thinking the same thing. Are they paying money for this "research"? Lol

He actually referenced their "research" several more times and in more interesting ways in the original interview, but it doesn't look like Edge wrote that up.

If Soul Sacrifice, Warrior's Lair, Dragon's Crown, Ys and Muramasa all release during 2013, that's a pretty good line up for my taste. It's a good thing that they realise the Vita is not in a good spot currently though.

I do hope it catches on eventually, such a lovely piece of hardware.

what...

fixed for you if size matters that much

Nope, the iPad is a heavy brick that gets tiring to hold after a few minutes. The size and length of the mini is perfect and it fits in my pants or jacket pockets. The Vita XL with the same length screen (but narrower due to 16:9) and just a tad thicker would be perfect for gaming.

I'd be in the dick
Did anyone really need an explanation for why the Vita needed a price drop?

Certainly, at the present time, maybe we’re a little behind the numbers we originally pictured.
Ahahahaha

A subjective analysis aside, those titles aren't going to push a system. For some of them (Muramasa for example) they'll be lucky to cause a one week bump in hardware sales.

And it was new software where the recent Vita Heaven fell apart completely.

Of course, and these kind of researches are important. Unfortunately, those two main reasons (must have game(s) and suitable price) are basically given to any gaming platform and all the other reasons after those would be much more interesting. Are people waiting for new HW revision; internal memory card, bigger screen or phone functionalities?

And a whole bunch of MH clones is your answer? Speaking about Japan, since he's the head of SCEJ, where is GT? Where is DQ? Where is a new FF? Where is MHP? Where is a new, in house RPG?

As I have been saying, an XL/Tablet vita with attached controls like wikipad would be excellent.

I don't think the Vita is dead yet simply because it's still such a fucking cool product. If nothing happens this year though, just put it to rest.

Yeah, I meant in a completely subjective way. More games is always better, of course.

They have many games coming in the next few weeks, but most will sell like shit, we are talking about ports and multis. That's not what we want.

I only see Senran Kagura, Phantasy Star and Soul Sacrifice breaking 100k.

no shit. What would the other reason for Sony to drop price?

I just noticed that SRWUX is releasing on the one week of March without a notable Vita release. Either those Vita 3rd party producers are smart or Bamco is taking pity on the system.

The other points are completely irrelevant until you correct the first two.

I know they do paid research, I just find it funny theyre using the research to back them up on something so obvious.

so... PS Cloud, playing PS3 and PS4 games on Vita, how would that influence your decision on how interesting Vita is?

Well of course that's not equal 100% to what Sony really thinks, so he couldn't put it in any other way I guess :)

While I want most of today's conference to be about the Orbis, I wouldn't mind having a ten or fifteen minute section highlighting some exclusives on the Vita (as well as a price drop on hardware AND memory)
