Replacement Wii U Pads $150

Actually I already put in a claim for the power supply and sensor bar earlier about two weeks afterward. It was only recently when I went to play that I noticed the Wii U gamepad was missing as well. I should probably submit another ticket but I kind of wonder if it is too late.
It might be but still call and ask someone, but how can you go that long without knowing,i would've checked to make sure nothing else was missing when i noticed what was missing.

In 2006 Nintendo partnered with Delta Airlines to provide travelers with DS demos. In 2013 Delta partnered with Nintendo to "lose" Wii U controllers so Nintendo gets money for replacements.

j/k but the 2006 deal was real and just came to my mind ;)

3) Target has the Playstation Vita with a game pack in for $209 right now. $60 more than just the Wii game pad for comparable hardware as the entire Wii U guts, an OLED screen, and a game. What is going on?

This is definitely a reason I'd say the gamepad was the wrong direction to go. For the functionality it provides, the cost is way too high.

Another is that Nintendo placed all bets on the gamepad without thinking of how many games are going to actually utilize it. The only notable games I can think of are Nintendo Land and Zombi U. In my experience so far, using it has been a redundant hassle. That is why I wish the gamepad would become a backseat focus of the console. Developers that actually have a vision for it can make something great, and other developers won't feel pressured to implement some cheap gimmick. Nintendo can cut down on production of the device and save money, then the price should be able to go down(?).

I'm not saying this is a perfect solution by any means, it's just what I'd like to see.

Edit: Also, sorry for a bit of off topic, but I think I missed that thread about not selling the gamepad in a basic set or something, so I wanted to get that off my chest.

It's a tablet minus some RAM, an SD slot and a CPU. It has all the standard controller features as well as most standard tablet features, plus the gyroscope and sensor bar.

I'm more surprised people don't understand why its expensive.

It's the lack of that hardware coupled with the fact that the screen isn't exactly the best quality or the highest res compared to many tablets on the market. It's a relatively low resolution, resistive touch screen that streams it's visuals from another device. The idea that it does or should retail for $150 just doesn't sound right to me. But, again, I won't pretend to be some expert in what it would cost to build such a thing with off the shelf parts.

EDIT:

Why iPhone so expensive it just glass and screen and some internal components?
Dude you can get 7" Android tablets that are 800x480 with multitouch capacitive screens, 1Ghz+ Processors, 8-16Gb Storage for less than $100.

The Acer Iconia B1 has 1.2Ghz CPU, 8Gb Storage, 1024x600 Cap multitouch screen, 4.1 Jellybean, wifi, bluetooth, accelerometer for $130.

The gamepad is just a dumb terminal, no processor, os, internal storage, etc.. etc..

Well I wasn't in a hurry to hook it back up given that I had nothing at all to play on it. And I *thought* I remembered seeing the gamepad. It turned out I was wrong.

Stuff from the Nintendo parts store is typically NOT sold at a gouging price. They have always been very reasonable with replacement parts prices. It's an expensive fucking controller. If they start selling it at Target et al I'd expect it will be at least $150 at retail.

Yeah that is part of why it shocked me so much. The powersupply and sensor bar replacements were pretty reasonable.

Honestly, when the dude told me the replacement cost of $150+ shipping I almost wanted to say "never mind" because there is not even anything I'm really looking forward to playing any time soon. But what the fuck am I going to do with a Wii U without the pad? So I grit my teeth and gave my my credit card info.

They're not paying for your lost luggage? Bit shitty...

From my experience with lost luggages, airlines do remburse. You need to give a cost estimate and itemized what was lost. If Delta doesn't cover his Wii U pad, just claim $150 extra worth of clothes. It does take awhile for them to send you money. That's probably why the OP decided to buy a gamepad before hand.

This is not a wiimote situation, the wii-u pad has all the buttons and stick as a regular controller and thus can be used as one.Didn't Nintendo say that devs aren't required to use the screen,so if they just want to mirror what's happening or just use a map they can,i could be wrong.

Right, but it doesn't have a sensor bar, gyroscope AND accelerometer, rumble motors, dual channel wifi or standard controller inputs, and has a worse camera.

It's also using entirely off-the-shelf parts.

Why is this such an unbelievable concept for people that a custom built form factor tablet that is pretty much a tablet outside of storage and a CPU is expensive?

The bitch of it was, it was a carry on that they grabbed from me gateside claiming that they didn't have room for it. I was partially at fault given that I was running late and only arrived at the gate about 5 minutes before the flight was scheduled to leave. But as a result I didn't even think anything about it when they took my luggage without giving me a gate claim ticket. Then, sure enough, when I got off for my connection it wasn't there. Nor was it there when I arrived home.

The real thing that sucked more than anything is that I was taking it home for Christmas to show to family and play with friends and I didn't have it the entire trip. And that was one of my only chances to even play any of the games multiplayer.

Eventually I got the carry on luggage back but it was missing the aforementioned stuff.
You might get lucky and get reimbursed in that case if you keep pressing the issue. I wish you luck.

I fly pretty often for work, and while I've never had anything stolen myself I've heard enough horror stories from friends and colleagues to never let my guard down. Baggage handlers are generally low paid, low supervision and low morality. If I check something the most I'll lose are clothes or my toothbrush.

It's a touchy situation though. Most won't cover electronics or other sensitive articles.

This thread is confusing, Vita is definitely more powerful than the Wii U Gamepad. $80 is probably the price for the pad once it sees more proper consumer channels than direct from the factory.

Yes and it doesn't have a CPU, 8Gb Internal memory, Bluetooth, GPS, MicroSD reader, it also has an inferior screen and digitiser. The things it doesn't have offsets the cost of the things it does have, those things you listed cost dollars at most when bought in bulk, the sensor bar is just 2 freaking IR emitters.

They can just mirror it, but that's completely redundant. Why not just use the Pro controller for that?

Another solution could be for Nintendo to actually talk to developers and tell them they have options. Some of them seem like they have no clue the Wiimote still exists, and have never heard of the pro controller.

So are you saying that are virtually doubling the price for people who have to order direct replacements from them when something is lost/broken? If so, fuck that noise. That is even worse.

So what happens if you play a lot and the analog sticks get worn out? Can you send it in and get the sticks replaced for a smallish fee?

Stop the misery and just sell the console on ebay. You know deep inside its the best course of action

But you can't buy them in bulk.

Because they're not off the shelf components.
Unlike the Chinese made tablets you're comparing to.

Unless you're saying that all game controllers are a massive rip off, because the WiiU control pad has all of the same internals that a Dual Shock 3 does and then a bunch more?

I'm very interested to see if the Wii U ever actually produces a game that utilizes two gamepads. Remember when Nintendo said that's something they are going to do?

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.
No way the cost to make is anywhere $150.

How much could this part possibly cost...?

Ahahaha.

Finding comparisons to Vita and Wii U is like finding comparisons to any hardware where there's at least an 8x difference in power.

Holy cow, if there's over 8x increase in power between Vita and Wii U, how much more powerful is Wii U over Wii?! :-o

Honestly? If I thought I could have gotten ANYTHING reasonable for the system w/o the pad, I would have considered it at this point. I have been pretty underwhelmed by it. That $150 hurt to pay.

I can verify this - it's £80 or so in the UK to have it replaced. My kitten clawed the screen and it's non-responsive. :(

The guy I spoke to basically said they class things as major or minor repairs, and anything related to the pad is a major repair.

As a big Nintendo fan, even I don't fully think Nintendo is telling the truth on the Gamepad and how much it really costs them to make. I'd love to be proven wrong by someone but I think this is something Nintendo is taking advantage of at this current time to fund further software and advancements for the system.

Wat?

You seriously think everything in the Gamepad is custom made by Nintendo?

Its made by Foxconn who probably already have the screens, gyro/accelerometer, wifi chips sat on a shelf somewhere.

You can get a full blown tablet for far less than they are charging for the Gamepad and you think the Gamepad is worth it?

Wasn't the $150 number known?

I was just mulling this the other day. Boy, if a kid or a visitor drops this thing, I am going to be hot. It's bad enough when a $50 DualShock goes flying, but what happens when a stick or button goes whack on a $150 Gamepad?

I'm sure Nintendo built it extra-rugged for just this reason! :p

If you use the pro controller then no offtv play which in my opinion is one of the reasons to own a wii-u.I'm pretty sure Nintendo told them they have options, sometime you can't help some devs they're that incompetent.

Can we assume the Xbox 360 controller costs the same as the Wii U Pro controller?

No, why are you saying I do?

There is at least SOME non-standard technology in the pad, if ONLY to avoid patent and licensing issues with regard to rumble.

That can't even be argued against speculatively.

Its made by Foxconn who probably already have the screens, gyro/accelerometer, wifi chips sat on a shelf somewhere.

SOME components does not mean ALL components.
Your tablet examples - and which you are picking and choosing what components do and don't have cost equivalents to negate additional costs that the gamepad has that a tsblet doesn't - are ENTIRELY bulk produced off the shelf components.

The WiiU gamepad IS NOT entirely bulk produced. If NOTHING ELSE it has custom controller board, PCB and form factor.

Again, you cannot argue that even speculatively. It doesn't even look like a tablet!

You can get a full blown tablet for far less than they are charging for the Gamepad and you think the Gamepad is worth it?

This is nothing about 'worth' which is a subjective evaluation of the cost : benefit ratio to you.

It is about the cost.

$150 for a controller is getting ridiculous. I understand it's not your average controller, but I don't see how anyone could think it was a great idea to release a system where half the cost is tied into the controller.

I hope the OP gets reimbursed from the airline.

Why is this such an unbelievable concept for people that a custom built form factor tablet that is pretty much a tablet outside of storage and a CPU is expensive?

Again, because it's not a very high quality screen and the fact that it doesn't have RAM/storage/CPU means that it's a useless lump if it's not within about 20 ft. of a Wii U, and has a poor battery life, and so on. All I'm saying is that -- as a consumer -- if Nintendo had opted not to include the GamePad with the Wii U and instead sold it as an optional accessory, I personally would find a $150 price tag to be ludicrous.

If you use the pro controller then no offtv play which in my opinion is one of the reasons to own a wii-u.I'm pretty sure Nintendo told them they have options, sometime you can't help some devs they're that incompetent.

Who said it can't have both? Sending the image to the gamepad is extremely simple from what we have heard. That's no an issue. What is an issue is the price of the gamepad is way too high for what it brings to the table.

like a lot of people you enjoy off screen play, and that is great. But for others, like myself, it doesn't justify the cost of the gamepad.

If there were a ton of games that utilized its features this wouldn't be much of an issue, but from where we are at now, there is no real reason for this to be the focus of the system. Nintendo jumped the gun and we are all paying for it.

Carry-on or leave it at home.
Also, I noticed that if you put electronics in checked baggage, you are more or less guaranteed to find a TSA "We-went-through-your-shit" notice in there at your destination.

Factory certified?
So it's not even new?

It was in a carryon according to the OP...
