Rumour: Dead Space 4 Cancelled Following Poor DS3 Sales [EA: "Patently False"]

After DS3, I'm never buying an EA game again. They've gone too far. I will find another means of playing their games, like gamefly. If they lock out content with online passes, I don't care. I still won't buy shit.

someone will pick up the dead space Visceral team, practically guaranteed

they should have straight out fired the "army of two:the devils cartel" visceral team

Make game more action, against fans request, to get more sales. Game gets less sales. Next game gets axed because of less sales.

EA, how about you listen to what people want, rather than assuming what you think they want?

Thanks for killing a good series. ¬_¬

"EA also advised Visceral that Dead Space 3 needed to appeal to a wider audience than the series' previous two titles, our source added, and the studio was reportedly told to focus on action over horror in an effort to make the game feel more like BioWare's Mass Effect."

This is the problem right here.First EA executives shat on the core premise of the series and then when it did not result in good sales then they axe the series. Also it seems that EA wants to become like Activision with a focus on few games with blockbuster sales and axing of all series that are not able to break into this sales group even though the sales and fan following may be decent.I hope this rumour doesn't pan out as I loved the first two DS and even though I skipped DS3 I was hoping that a DS4 would go back to the basics .

I've only played the first four chapters or so, but I was getting into it. Was a bit actiony at the start but seemed to be settling into typical Dead Space type fare later on - not the shooter people were claiming it was.

Oh well, it's a nice trilogy to have in my collection.

If true I hope the team gets another project, must be lots of people working in that team.

I've been worried that they were going to be in trouble ever since EA announced those ridiculous sales expectations for DS3. It's a real shame too since they clearly have a ton of talent. But EA wanted the series to sell like only one horror series has ever sold, Resident Evil. It's just too much.

will learn eventually
Good, every series needs to come to an end. We don't need a new Dead Space every year.

It's a shame though the series couldn't end on a high note.

Should probably not trust the 7-11 security cameras quite so much
If true they brought it on themselves. DS2 was not good enough to keep the series going and the direction they went with 3 just added insult to injury. It all comes down to that second game, just wasn't of the quality required to get people to come back for a third entry. The focus on cinematic action and awful storytelling ruined a promising series.

At least we got DS1 and Extraction out of it and hopefully Mirror's Edge won't be exhumed under this EA.

And here you have the results of the "AAA gaming"* that you love so much.

*understand AAA as games with double the marketing budget than development budget, which is unsustainable as we're been seeing for this whole generation

Kind of sad news. I really liked the 1st and 2nd game.

I'm kind of put off playing the 3rd game after the reports of it being more action focused than horror (when compared to the last 2).

The original Dead Space worked really well as a Space horror game and the 2nd while not being as much of a horror game as the first still had some great moments and improved on other areas like visuals.

Appealing to a wider audience wouldn't have worked like this for Dead Space, they clearly forgot their roots.

well, if Dead Space series is dead, EA will comment on it in their next fiscal call. So we will know in a couple of months.
it's been pretty bad for EA games label if true. Medal of Honor was just killed, now DS might be next. Army of Two is probably to be the next dead IP.

I like to see what kind of new brands they'll introduce for next gen.

You mean cramming in microtransactions and dudebroing our game out can have negative effects on sales? Well damn, better cancel the entire series rather than undo our douchebaggery then!

I don't even mind the microtransaction stuff since I'm not touching it anyway, but ds3 is simply rather boring game compared to previous games. I still beat it in co-op and enjoy it, but it really felt so mindless shooter.

I think my problem is with the weapon system here, they all felt the same and not unique enough to make me want to use one weapon instead of the other, or to switch it up during combat, it make most of the combat felt so same-y.

co-op felt half ass too, rather than just 3 optional co-op mission to develop Carver, they should have made the game shorter but have 2 playable character ala Resident Evil 2, with each player having their own story and mission

well how much did it sell, compared to the first 2 games?
I hope the visceral talent will somehow find a new opportunity to make a brand new franchise.

It's strange, we have had a lot of Dead Space this generation.

3 mainline
1 rail shooter
1 arcade puzzle game
1 phone game
2 anime movies
comics?

Shame if they abandon it so suddenly.

Remember Dead Space 1 and Mirror's Edge? Even Dante's Inferno? Back when EA were committed to new IP?

Back when I started to like EA.

So much for that.

If DS3 was any indication of the series' future, it won't be missed. It is a shame though. The first game was fantastic, and even DS2 had its moments.

Papercuts

fired zero bullets in the orphanage.
They incorporated it into a really poorly made crafting system. So yes, it's a problem.

The game gave you plenty of resources needed, and even lets you buy the important microtransaction stuff with ingame resources. It was not an issue whatsoever unless you just outright didn't like the crafting at all, which would be another issue entirely.

So they continue on their path of killing every good IP they have. Glad sony isn't like this. Or Infamous and 90% of their other Ips would be killed.

Only a matter of time for the studio to follow. A real shame because it means Arthur Gies wont be able to apply for a job there.

Dead Space 3 still was ok at least compared to some of the shit some series have gone through recently... but, yeah, it was the worst one in the series by a long shot, and the reasons that it is have everything to do with the way they keep trying to make the series pliable to MODERN GAME AUDIENCES, which really just means more set pieces and shittier, shallower gameplay.

So in a way, I'm glad this teaches them a lesson. In another way, another unique series out the window thanks to the industries tireless crusade to ruin everything that has ever been good about gaming with MODERN AAA GAME DESIGN.

Right, but the problem is that the crafting system is stupid. Scrounging for items to build your own weapon wasn't that great. I'd take the pre-made weapons any day. ANY day. The microtransactions simply made it worse by adding a "Buy this shit" button for people. It was that easy, too. Really. They're only getting worse from here.

Friggin' EA! If I were making Fuse I would be freaking out right now.

Dead Space is a brilliant series, however, I think many of the changes made between 2 and 3 were for the worse. Scavenging for parts, a dodgy upgrade system, universal ammo, action over horror, co-op (although less intrusive than some other games, there were still waves of enemies that made single player a bitch as they were clearly designed around co-op).
I really enjoyed the game despite these issues and thought it had a decent story and pace. Dead Space 2 is to this day one of my favourite games this gen.

Sad to hear this news...

It's a good time for the series to end, though. After what EA did to DS3 I wouldn't want to know what DS4 would have looked like. Better end the series as long as it still resembles what it once was somewhat at least.

Terrible news for the employees of course.

Is it possible for someone else to acquire Mirrors Edge and Dead Space Ip since EA doesn't give a fuck or is their ego too big?

It's hard to fault EA too much. They gave the series a shot, not many publishers would be willing to do what they did with Dead Space.

Saying that, their expectations were simply too high. They shoul have known it was a modest seller at best and left it there until perhaps the next generation where they could have attempted to make it more mainstream.
Like hell they did. They had heavy hand in DS3 development and direction.

Series was on a downward trajectory since DS2 to be fair. Better they kill it of now before we get DEAD SPACE 4: A GOOD DAY TO SPACE HARD.

I know alot of people are giving out about EA ruining the series, and im sure they had a big part in it, but you also have to remembe,r without EA taking a risk on DS1, it probably wouldnt have seen the light of day.

Not sure who their source is, but DS3 is a woefully misguided game. Changing everything that worked about a franchise is a terrible way to attract a larger audience, but a great way to lose the one you've already cultivated. While I'm a sucker for the sci-fi horror setting of the series and would like to see a next gen Dead Space, I'd almost rather see it shelved than further watered down. Way to fuck up a great franchise in three games EA.

EA is ruining all of their games. Do you guys think Bioware is making the horrible choices to do what they did with Dragon Age or Mass Effect? Not likely. EA wants the money, and they want it easy. They'll sacrifice quality to do it.

I'm guessing it had to do with all the negative news around the game. All of the overblown reactions to co-op, all the bad mouthing. The micro transaction thing didn't help. I love the dead space series but those are some of the reasons I didn't get it.

They wanted it to reach more than 5 millions by being more like Mass Effect? That's stupid, no Mass Effect game ever sold close to that number.

Loved the first two games, I'm near the end of DS3 but cannot be bothered finishing it, massive let down. EA wanted it more shooty along with ridiculous micro transactions so that has backfired and jobs will probably be lossed.

Shitty publisher decisions affecting careers, hopefully Mass Effecf won't be next

Take a moderately successful franchise
Pump an absurd amount of money into the upcoming entry
Game sells what it usually sells
Axe franchise

I doubt that they'll ever sell them. The best hope for either is that some team members will leave and form a new studio where they can work on a spiritual successor. Sort of like Bayonetta from Platinum. That's also probably the only hope that we have of seeing some sort of sequel to ME.
