Tomb Raider PC Performance Thread

JaseC

gave away the keys to the kingdom.
Mine does this too! Everything else is ROCK solid though.

Anyone else?

It's either a strange stylistic choice or a bug.

When I launch Tomb Raider it defaults to my Intel integrated card instead of my 660ti. I have my nvidia software set to prefer maximum performance. Anyone have any ideas? At this point I can't even launch tomb raider.

Can you not just disable the Intel IGP from within the BIOS?

Well, it sucks this probably wont be patched in the next couple of days. Going go be busy the tail end of this week/weekend. Theses crashes are so frustrating.

Has anyone else tried rolling back to 310.90 drivers? Keep reading that those on that driver aren't getting crashes with tesselation.

Game runs beautifully at 70fps, but keeps crashing randomly.

1080p @ Ultimate
3570K @ 4.4Ghz
GTX 690 @ 314.14
16GB DDR3 @ 2400Mhz

Happens in both Windows 7 and 8 (64 bit)

Huh? Why would it be up to Nvidia to fix a game crash? A similar crash in Hitman was the fault of Nixxies, as were other problems. What you get from a driver, generally, is more performance.

Oh yeah. I'm trying the 310.90 drivers as well. What are the SLI bits?

EDIT: Found em, 0x084000F5 .

Yeah, I know turning off tesselation would probably fix it. But I really don't want to. I'll probably just wait until a new driver release if I can't get it working with this driver set.

Judge for yourself.

FXAA:

4x SMAA:

Is FXAA as good? No. The difference with the foliage is pretty obvious. Still, the IQ is pretty damned great as far as Lara and the environment are concerned. Not blurry at all, IMO, at least not compared to most FXAA implementations. If it were not for the foliage, it would be tough to tell the two apart at a glance.

how do you apply 4x smaa ? In radeon pro there's only 1x greyed out :(

Going to be honest, have no idea on whose end the problem is. I'm not an expert when it comes to drivers and game crashes. So it's not fair for me to call out Nvidia (I'll edit my post to reflect this).

I don't care who it is, Nvidia or the game makers, I'm just bummed it probably won't get patched today or tomorrow. Only time I had to play this.

Thanks for posting the bits. Please let us know if you can run the game on 310.90 with tesselation on without crashes.

EDIT: Also, can you tell us if you see a drop in FPS switching from the latest drivers to this driver? Kind of curious about that as well.

Just guessing from the name (I don't have the game yet) I'd say it uses 16 bit per component (instead of 8 bit) buffers for the rendering/postprocessing. If so, you should see the largest difference in HDR effects, and maybe some postprocessing-induced banding without high precision.

The game has a lot of banding in every effect with High Precision on and off. :(

Really, is the king of banding.

My setup is this:

I5 2500K OC'ed to 4.2GHz
8GB RAM
GTX 570 Superclocked (EVGA)

Didn't try the game on Ultimate settings, only on Ultra. The game runs beautifully with 60fps most of the time. It's so pretty I could barely believe it.

Also, I didn't turn off tesselation, just went for the default Ultra settings. I'm pretty satisfied so far.

EDIT: Also, I was playing with 1080p resolution.

I'm getting some weird performance issues.

With AA off, the bench averages 24 FPS. With 4xSSAA it averages 56 fps...

Zuh?

Also just a quick note for any SLI users, I had the Exclusive Fullscreen option unticked and my 670s were only at ~45% utilization. I then switched to exclusive fullscreen using the in-game options and my cards went up to 99%. Huge FPS boost after that.

This seems to work for me as well, my utilization were all over the place yesterday which resulted in dips to 35-40 fps and now it seems to stay at 60. Only played for a few minutes but I'm going to play more after work and see if I can maintain 60.

2500k 4,5ghz
2x 670
314.14

2560x1440
TressFX off, tesselation off, 2x SMAA, rest maxed

TressFX + 4x SSAA basically crash the game.

670 sli using the 314 drivers.

Having very little luck with the game. Patch please.

My entry to PC gaming has been a good one so far, this being my first pre-order PC game is marring that experience.

Ran smooth for a few hours last night:

i5 3750K 3.4GHz
GTX 660Ti 2GB superclock
8GB DDR3
Tessalation on, hairFX off.

Worked great aside from the occasional pause at random times. Like once every 20 minutes the game would just freeze for a few seconds, then go back to normal. When I tried to alt-tab to start SimCity downloading it all went to hell though.

You probably haven't got enough VRAM. You're rendering whatever resolution 4 times over, and applying a memory intensive hair effect, plus the other settings you're using.

Tessalation seemed to be the cause of the freezing on my end (690GTX). After a few of those it would hard lock my PC and I had to reset it. Turning off Tessalation fixed all of that.

That must be it. I've been hitting 1.5GB Vram usage with FXAA, max settings @ 1050p.

I don't understand why people are saying this is more demanding than Crysis 3.

Crysis 3 i maxed out on ultra @ 1080p and ran near 30 FPS average.

Tomb raider i'm running at 55 FPS with everything maxed out and tressfx on @ 1080p

Damn. I really wish I could get a screenshot of this but all my shots (with steam and fraps) are coming up as a black screen.

Anyways. I didn't get any crashing, but there are some horrible graphic glitches with tesselation enabled on the 310.90. Near the river in the very first area Lara's body and face become transparent. Also the river itself can been seen through rocks and the flipped over truck nearby... :(

Lost about 5~10 frame sin the benchmark. Not a big deal. Still feels very smooth.

I've got a 670 and every few minutes my display driver crashes. Very frustrating, I'm on the latest beta that released yesterday. All I want to do is play the game :(

I'm on 314.14

Neither are the TVs we're playing on.

The point is that if I want to actually be able to see what I'm doing, I'll need to downsample from a resolution that will scale evenly to my native resolution, hence the offering of 1200p.

Disable tesselation. Only thing Nvidia users can do now it seems. :(

All I want to know is: is this game a next-gen title on PC? Yes, or no.

I would put Crysis 3 in the next-gen title category easily. And probably Sleeping Dogs, Hitman, and Far Cry 3 max'd out.
