Monster Games is making Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D

Ah. I was convinced it was Retro porting the game to get some extra resources for whatever they're working on.

I was hoping Monster was working on something original :/

  • Good: Now we know Retro is not working on a remake.
  • Bad: Now we know Monster Games is not working on a new Excite game.

Their last game was Pilotwings, and it was a 3DS launch title, so that means they've had a solid two years at this point, and presumably another 4 months or so on top of that before DKCR 3D releases... It doesn't take two and a half years to port. Bets are that they have two teams, a small team doing the 3DS port, and their primary team making a Wii U game, whatever it may be. Presumably a racing game.

I think it was confirmed at some point by a certain Emily Rogers that they were working on a Wii U title. So...side/fun project? Future experience for a Donkey Kong Land 3D game?

Monster is a pretty small studio, so if they have another project in the works, I'd have to think it's on the backburner while this is in production.

They did make excitebike and excitebots in short succession. There is a hoping that they can make a wiiu excite truck 2

I wonder what this means for how the game will perform; Pilotwings Resort has a highly erratic framerate in 2D and 3D, but I think that game is always rendering the whole of Wuhu Island.

Well, I guess we have to wait a little bit longer before we can play the inevitable Excitebike/truck/bots/whatever WiiU or 3DS game.

That said, this game looks amazing and I advise everyone who passed on the original to get it.

Don't forget that Monster is not a Nintendo second party. They could have got the porting deal half a year ago while they've done who-knows-what in the time prior.

Nah:

I live near Monster and can pretty much guarantee you they're not large enough to make something the scale of Donkey Kong Country Returns 2 Diddy Kong Racing unless they've quintupled in size in the past year or so.

If I had to guess about what they were making, assuming it were on Wii U, it would probably be a downloadable title.

this is likely. a port of a WIi game has certainly not been occupying their time since Pilotwings wrapped

Could be... I think Iwata and Miyamoto are desperate for more 3DS hits for the west, and they needed to out-source the port because all of their main development teams are already working on other 3DS/Wii U games, so they gave the project to Monster.

I can't imagine it's taken them more than 6-9 months to do this port. I'm certain they have a bigger product either for 3DS or Wii U coming out within the next year or so.

This would be the correct answer. They've been working on another project. Studios don't just stop producing new products, and DKC:R is NOT two years into development.

Speaking of Pilotwings 3DS... does anyone else loved that game?

I think the game is great. The graphics are clean and smooth, the gameplay is tight and the 3D effect is very nice. And everytime I remember the main tune of the game, I get nostalgia overload.

So that's why Monster hired a quite experienced character animator a while ago (former Reel FX and Sony Pictures Imageworks dude).

Monster isn't really big enough to tackle a project like F-Zero - with a team size of roughly a dozen people, a 3DS project seems right up their alley. And they're certainly talented, so I'm glad to see they're still working with Nintendo.

Nevertheless, though, it doesn't take two and a half years to port a Wii game over to 3DS. Not unless they're a team of 5-10 people, and even then, it shouldn't take even a year.

Clearly, they are working on something else alongside the port, even if their original product is on the back-burner for 6 months because Iwata wanted the port done by summer.

Would you guys be happy with Retro working on Metroid Dread for the 3DS or do you guys want them to do a Wii U game?

I want a Wii U game or nothing!

Whoa, they're that small? I thought they were at least 20 ~ 25 strong.

So Retro's all in on Secret Retro Game (
Mario Kart 8
). This can only be a good thing.

This would make sense, given that Mario Kart Wii U presumably didn't begin development until the beginning of 2012. They probably need help at EAD making some of the 32 courses if Iwata wants the game done by November/December this year.

I don't even think they have a webmaster on staff; their homepage is literally a white screen with a list of the games they've worked on in the past.

What do they need a webmaster for? They're developers. Nintendo handles all of the communications, marketing, and distribution. All they have to do at Monster is sit in front of the computer and program the game.

Unless they just did stuff for other companies like Next Level Games in the meantime.

God damn it, I few days ago there was some rumors about a 3DS game. I hope they are working with something actually new.

I don't think they'd hire people from Bioware, Vigil, Naughty Dog, Junction Point and the like just to work on a Mario Kart game.
