Its just like starting up a soap opera. You don't need to know the characters since pretty much everything that happened in Dragonball was inconsequential to what happened in Dragon Ball Z
In the recent Vegeta thread, I pointed to this as a prime example of why fans in Japan likely preferred Goku and did not want to see whiny, crying Gohan become the main character. Similarly, Goku got wrecked by King Piccolo, got inside a hovercar with Yajirobe and immediately went to Korin to find a way to become stronger and overcome his adversary. In the same situation, Gohan would probably spend five episodes sorting out his emotions and building his courage to fight King Piccolo -- then another five doubting himself after any kind of setback or failure. Piccolo smacking him away during the Nappa fight pretty much summed up the viewer's sentiments over that whiny brat.

I was a special case. I watched the DB series backwards (GT, Z, DB) because a family friend gave us chinese dub seasons of GT and I started watching those out of order at age 2. Then a few years later, WB was airing DBZ so i started watching that up to the Freiza saga since the channel never went beyond that. Then my family got DirectTV and it was toonami+CB ever since.
anyways, i have crazy DB friends that dont acknowledge the original series. One of them right now is in the process of rewatching the entire series. I asked him if he was going to start with DB and his answer was "HELL NO"

From what i can tell Dragon Ball did ok in the US ratings wise but it was never as huge as DBZ was. Everyone I knew in middle/high school preferred DBZ because of the action, I was the weird kid who liked DB more. Goku wasn't given Jesus powers from day 1 so he actually had to train to keep up with the adults, also the dub was better and the pacing wasn't as slow as Z.
GT sucked! Kai is great, it's on par with DB imo. The trimming of the series helped it immensely.
I also liked Yu Yu Hakusho over Z.

This is absolutely hilarious. They left in the flat-chested jokes, but took out a 3 minute sequence about buying panties, and a grenade turned into a hot pepper breakfast.
I did watch DBZ as a kid before Dragon Ball, but nowadays I always watch Dragon Ball before DBZ. I prefer it actually. The Funimation dub of DB was really good, but not so good in DBZ. At least Kai had a pretty good dub, but it's so hard watching Kai with the new music when I'm so used to the original =(

I loved Dragon Ball , its a shame that Dr. Slump never got a release here.

Started with Dragonball and transitioned to Z. The original dragonball didn't get high enough ratings so the series was dropped after the 1st season. I don't know anything about the series after Goku turns into an ape.

By the time Saint Seiya was released in America, anime from the 2000s had started to become popular, making it look very dated. It also had a totally ridiculous intro (I Ran, by Duran Duran...sung by Bowling for Soup) and aired on a block on Cartoon Network that nobody watched (SVES, the precursor to the original Saturday night Toonami).

I think the original Dragon Ball is superior to Z. Son Goku and the Mercenary Tao storyline with the tower is my favorite story arc.
Same. I loved DB.
The first arc is probably a bit too silly, but once the Tournament Arc gets going, it's all pretty good from there with the Red Ribbon Army, 2nd Tournament, and King Piccolo.
Watched the hell out of it on Toonami when they were showing that.
Also helped that fights weren't horribly drawn out like in Z.

Scrolling through the thread thinking about all of the things in DB just makes me like it even more. Z just "is", there's Super Saiyan and so on, but that's it. DB was when Goku had proper weaknesses and had to overcome them. Like when his tail was a problem, and the emotional scene with
that followed.
One scene in Z I love is where Mercenary Tao meets Gohan, because it's a funny reference to that whole storyline in DB. It's a shame that it means nothing to a lot of people.
For people that went into Z without knowledge of DB, the fact that Goku and Piccolo can't beat Raditz must not really mean much.

In the UK we saw DBZ first.
I later imported the DB dvd's, was amazed how much better it was then DBZ. I guess it's because it's from when toriyama still cared about the series.

A mentioned in the thread multiple times, Z was first then DB. Personally, when I started watching Z, I started when they were on Namek and thought "Who are these people and why should I care?" I was hoping for the episodes to rerun and gain some clarification. When they did and started at Raditz, I was even more frustrated since I still had no idea who these people were and how Goku amassed a huge number of intensely loyal friends.
When DB had started airing, I was definitely obsessed and found out about all the characters myself through magazines (Pojo, anyone?) and early Internet sources (Planet Namek had almost everything you could think of), but I watched the whole series to see it for myself. I would say its definitely better than the Z portion, having rewatched the whole thing recently (400 eps of DB and Z on my shelf). The fights, stakes, and adventure were on a much grander scale than Z. Really enjoyed finally seeing it come together.
All of my sane friends definitely think DB is better.

Makes you wonder if Raditz would get proper treatment had he been introduced in the "pre-Z" era.
There's a little bit of historial whitewashing going on here. It's not like Dragonball's fights were super tactical until Raditz came along and ruined it forever. All this fights were the same, except the winner was just "stronger" instead of having "a higher power level". Goku didn't beat Tao by using some special technique, he just got stronger. He didn't beat Tambourine or Demon King Piccolo with strategy either. He was just stronger.

I remember getting into DBZ when it was on... oh what was it WB or Fox? When it went to Cartoon Network, it was when I was finally really hooked into the series. I would always hope they would air the episodes after the 52, that was the time when they only had the old voices and heavy editting. I still remember the day when I saw the commercial saying new episodes of DBZ were coming. Oh man the memories.
I remember watching when Dragon Ball was for awhile on CN, but I don't think they got too many episodes. Sadly I don't have the time or money to check it out, although I always wanted too.

When DBZ was first aired, I was really surprised, since I recognized this series, and could tell that these were the grown-up versions of the Dragonball characters I had seen earlier, but there were a whole lot of other characters running around I couldn't recognize. I at first thought that I had somehow missed a few seasons of Dragonball. I only later learned that they had simply not ben aired.
However, I ended up later watching the International Channel's airing of the uncut Dragonball Z in raw japanese. While the US dub was still somewhere on Namek, I jumped into the untranslated version of the Android Saga, right when Cell version 2 was hunting Android 18. I couldn't understand a word of what anyone was saying, but dialog was never the series' strong suit anyways. I was scratching my head on who this new Saiyan was, though. I had to loo up who Trunks was online. I watched through the fight against Kid Buu that way. I even later watched the end chink of Dragonball GT that way well before GT premiered on Toonami.
