Media Create Sales: Week 10, 2013 (Mar 04 - Mar 10)

Prefer that on Wii U, but they should get Alfa System to make an original 3DS Tales. What are they even doing nowadays? They were behind the PSP Tales games and the Phantasy Star Portable series, now nada. They weren't behind Innocence R IIRC.

An original Tales on 3DS could do great numbers, I'm positive. :)

We got Innocence when they made one. This is not a good idea. Maybe they can do Radiant Mythology for 3DS, though.

I don't think there will be an original Tales mothership game on 3DS. The Tales series belongs on home consoles. The PS3 is perfect for the series and if they do remake Symphonia, it should be there.

Considering Famitsu scores, next week could be really interesting for Vita:

Atelier Meruru Plus: The Apprentice of Arland (PSV) – 9/9/9/8 [35/40]
Dead or Alive 5 Plus (PSV) – 9/9/9/8 [35/40]
One Piece: Pirate Warriors 2 (PSV) – 9/9/9/9 [36/40]
Pro Baseball Spirits 2013 (PSV) – 9/9/9/8 [35/40]

Word of mouth was pretty awful in regards to Tales of Hearts R. 2ch was not a fan, and the final game actually cut story content from the DS version.

A crap remake like this was going to sell terribly regardless of where it was, me thinks.

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
Amazing that actual good games make for better console sales. Hopefully Sony takes note.

I just don't understand why Sony didn't work theirs arses' off and get some of the multiplatform games available for the Vita only. Games like God Eater 2 or FFX HD shouldn't be found anywhere else. That might have helped a lot.
PSP is still a viable platform, though. It's selling better than the Wii U.

As someone who loved the shit out of ToH, I lost all interest in ToH-R the moment I saw screens. If there are more people like me, that probably didn't help them!

They can, the PS3 has to be testament that any platform can be Resurrected if some effort is put behind it.

Not this again. Many devs banked on PS3 due to the success of the PS2. PS3 still eat up all the money they made with PS1 and PS2. Bottomline: You can´t compare the two.

ToHR also got a 9/9/8/8. Don't think Famitsu scores matter to anyone but the hardcore.

Cut content...from a DS game? lol how did this happen?

synphonia need to be on Nintendo platfrom , even Dawn of the new world sold nearly as good as tov in the us. They still want to earn the western tos market. Tos us for game cube sold the most remember.

Do you really think they can? I'm not saying this in a combative way or anything, I'm actually interested in hearing a plausible scenario where Sony is able to turn the Vita around worldwide in a way where it is a healthy and viable platform for both developers and publishers. I feel it is so hard, especially with the market it is today and the competition it faces, that it is virtually impossible. Anything which could have a chance of creating such a turn around would be stuff beyond Sony's control. What do you think they could do?

Pay Capcom a shit load of cash to make MHP4 Vita exclusive and withdraw all Nintendo platform MH games from sale. That's Japan fixed in one fell sweep.

For the west, it would take games like GTA and CoD to fix the system, and proper portable style games not just lazy ports of the mainline ones. Sony also need to release a Lite version of the device, 4.3" LCD, slimmer and with a better battery life for $150. That would get the market moving. They also need a much better strategy for non-game apps and a phone/tablet version. Vita in the west needs to become an ecosystem with access to music, videos, games, apps and ebooks. Sony need to work out how they are going to provide all of those services for Vita or it will never be a successful device.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
Who is developing those Tales of Vita ports ? They must be cheap as hell to develop if Baba/Bamco are satisfied with these sales. At one point you would think.....why even bother ?

Also, we're ignoring the whole price drop aspect of the situation. But he's right on some level: Quality software does genuinely impact sales of the hardware it's on. There's quite a bit more to all of this than that, but the germ of the idea is sound.

When is the next ''big'' release for Wii U in Japan? Pikmin 3?

For what it's worth, Pikmin 3 should provide a nice bump, considering the tile is on Famitsu's Japan's Most Wanted list.
Don't know how reliable it is though.

If only Ninty would getting off their ass and provide a release date.

if the vita can get its own exclusive iteration of GT, Syphon Filter and may be God of War where Kratos is the antagonist, all sony owned IPs, then I think the vita has a chance. If they work with 3rd parties and get the vita its own exclusive GTA, MH and MS then the vita can be fully resurrected WW

Likelihood of that happening is less than zero. Also, we already had Assassin's Creed and CoD on the Vita last holiday, and that didn't do much to boost Vita sales.

.It's not impossible, very hard would be more accurate, it's just up to them if they want the hardware to sell 20M or closer to 60M in its lifespan.

You're far from the only one, but I don't think you get just how badly Vita is faring.

20M worldwide LTD is a (highly improbable) best-case scenario, not a worst-case one.

Re-Fixed, I think. No way the PSV version is higher than Luigi's Mansion 2, lol

wat

What parts of the story could they POSSIBLY cut from the the game?

Various cutscenes, conversations, etc. Obvious no hugely important story bits, but a lot of character interactions here and there. It's pretty much inarguably a much worse game. Of course, this is coming from somebody who really liked the original Tales of Hearts.

I can't see how any Tales fan could have been all that excited for this, and the negative buzz around it/sales are proof of that. We'll probably never know how a proper, good Tales game could have sold on the platform because all we'll ever have to compare are these half assed remakes.

Yep. And with Monster Hunter 4 and Pokemon it looks like the race is already finished. But who knows.

I wonder if Nintendo will slow down the support for 3DS and go full force on Wii U. 3rd parties would keep 3DS afloat. Or they could expand but Iwata no likey.

Man the Wii U is squandering away the potential lead it could have got. Terrible numbers.

Vita did very well but will find it hard to sustain given the titles in the horizon.

I don't think it's really that simple. When dealing with a third party, sometimes no matter how much effort you want to put in to get a deal, if they see a better business opportunity elsewhere they will take it. There is no reason at all for Square Enix to make FFX HD a Vita exclusive for example, when they know that they would make more money and improve their public image more if it is on the PS3 as well. Why would they favor Sony over themselves? It's the same reason why major third parties in the West have gone full multiplatform now. The days of PS2 super-exclusives are over.

I don't know.
If they could get japanese publishers to support the hardware as Bamco is doing that would be a first.

I'm not saying it will be on par with PSP LTD, just that it could be a plateform healthier than the latest if they manage to deal with it decently (and protect it against piracy), dropping the price in America and PAL with a bit marketing , publishing more japanese titles worldwide, make a good use of the Gaikai's technology, make a bundle with PS4, improve the tools that help porting a PS3 game for Vita and attract more western AAA games like AC Liberations.

It's not impossible, very hard would be more accurate, it's just up to them if they want the hardware to sell 20M or closer to 60M in its lifespan.

Yeah I can see some of this having some impact, but we should not forget that they face different problems in Japan and in the West.

In Japan, the biggest problem they're facing is that the Vita isn't very attractive at all compared to the 3DS. The graphics are better, but heldheld players aren't that picky - as long as the graphics allow for a good degree of 3D gameplay, which was what the DS was missing, they're happy with it. So the PSP and 3DS having much more games and a much larger userbase works against the Vita in a big way.

In the West, handhelds are just on decline, period. Younger gamers are growing up playing games on their phones and tablets, adults don't use public transportation as much, it's easier to play something simple on a phone than to carry another dedicated device around, etc.

It seems to me that no matter what Sony does, they can't ignore the reality that both in Japan and in the West, the different cultural elements are all working against the Vita in a very negative way.

As for Tales series for Vita Baba has already teased the next one to come (and also said it won't be ToT).

Looking at Japanese retailers for past 2 weeks I see exactly opposite, but we'll see how it goes...

Still small-time compared to SS marketing.
That is possible, but Bravely Default definitelly had more than near to no marketing. Producing the demos takes time and cost money as well, and the demos also works as advertisement.

The PS3 ressurection didnt happen before nearly 3 year after the PS3 launch though. Or, at least it was after the PS3 Slim release that it started selling better. It didnt have much to do with that developers banked on the PS3 because of the PS2 at that time.

No need for wake up call. They knew this will happen. If I'm correct, it was even mentioned that they won't do a thing for the first quarter of the year(no games or whatsoever)

I'm pretty sure they said it in the way that they were expecting 3rd party support but we know what happened with that. If they ''knew'' that this situation would happen beforehand then Iwata cannot be fired fast enough.

Likelihood of that happening is less than zero. Also, we already had Assassin's Creed and CoD on the Vita last holiday, and that didn't do much to boost Vita sales.

COD and AC did pretty well, and Vita over the holiday season went from dead to awful, a significant improvement, in relative terms.

I know Ubisoft are happy with AC:L and COD sold enough to make Activision take the platform seriously enough to put out a competent version this time.

Otherwise yes, I agree the scenario is highly unlikely, Sony seem to be taking the path of least resistance every time when it comes to saving Vita. A price cut is easy, SS is one game and PS3/Vita multiplats don't really help Vita.

Sony should also work on getting an ecosystem working because there may be a time where they need to call on it in their smartphone division if Google start playing silly buggers with Android. So there is an extra incentive for Sony to get Vita into a decent state.

Yep. And with Monster Hunter 4 and Pokemon it looks like the race is already finished. But who knows.

If the Vita continued to sell at this pace, and the 3DS were to never sell a single unit ever again, it would take 149 weeks for the Vita to catch up. It's been over.
