SimCity: Maxis releases video of improved traffic system, talks about mod support

FYI: The dev: https://twitter.com/MaxisGuillaume often asks people to send him their Origin ID if they have a really good example of a bug in their city, especially if it's a tricky one to reproduce. If you some craziness going on in your game send it their way.

The Maxis Devs seem gung ho on modding which I'm so happy to hear. How fun would it be to make your own agent types?

Yup, our UI is in javascript for a reason, so you can play with it.

It's cool to see the fans digging through our source files, the creativity of our mod community has always been the lifeblood of Maxis.

Whats with this?

For Posterity
Ocean Quigley confirming via twitter that modding .package files is allowed:

and of course the screencap for when it gets deleted:

Edit: #UNCONFIRMED# according to /u/mgmuscari
Most recent patch (that I just downloaded) made the package files read only (lol), and editing DEBUG=!1 to be DEBUG=!0 didn't do anything for me.
But why was this done? Quiggers said that you could 'go for it' in relation to modded .package files ...
MAXIS = more lies.

Maxis can go fuck itself. Maybe that's why the game is a total cluster fuck, they have no competent in house QA.

Sooooo much better. Good to see that Maxis are reacting quickly to the bugs and pathfinding issues.

I am glad to see Maxis is not completely discouraged and working to constantly improve their game.

Not just through dlc either.

Another company that thinks it's fine to let paying customers beta test for them. Why do you suckers buy shit like this?

The game should never have been designed to work the way it does in the first place.

The idea behind SimCity is a solid one with an interesting new way to interact with others.

It sounds like the game itself, they didn't pull it off great, but you can't really be mad at the game just because they didn't make the game you wanted. If it's not what you wanted then simply don't buy it.

I'm sure they thought it was really cool how fans uncovered their PR lies.

Or QA caught it but the dev's said "Will not fix, not a priority at this time. Beta testers didn't notice it," I've seen plenty of games ship with very visible bugs.

Real reason maxis is excited bout the mod community is that they hope they fix the game

I hope so too. I need a new and good Sim City game. I've played far too much SC4 and there is a lot of potential for this one with some fixes done here and there.

Btw. What would be the chances of mods being able to increase the size of the city?

Are you serious?

There's a difference between not making the game I (or others) want and making one that is broken by design. Or lying about features.

So Maxis / EA are going to give modders access to the super servers where all the computation is being done then yeah?

How progressive and open of them! *snark* :p

Would Maxis really be the ones in charge of the QA process? Wouldn't that just go through EA rather than Maxis having their own in-house QA team; seems like it would be a waste for EA not to just have a general QA team who handle most of their titles. But then I have no idea how they are set up.

Like, hey, this is what I want to hear. Not a lot of weird dodgy-PR stuff, but videos of stuff they're working on.

I'll probably buy your game, Maxis, but only when it's a full game.

Most dev houses have their own internal QA teams.

You too can play with awesome modders space houses.

for only 39.99$ plus tax.....wether applicable or not!

I LOVE the idea of modders but know how this will end

Because there was no way to know beforehand that it would be the case? And given that the reviews didn't mention it at all either, there was no way to know after launch either, until very recently? Are you sure calling the customers suckers in this case is the right approach there, chief?

Yeah, it would have been impossible to test how the traffic system worked before launch.

I like that the game's improved and all, but still it's baffling that the kind of behavior in the video had to be delivered in a post-launch patch.

Yeah how does something so vital to the game and so fucking obvious not get picked up b QA before being shipped.

This "sucker" has had about 20 hours of enjoyment, although being in a different time zone I missed a lot of the server issues at night.

I'll give the game a miss for a while now and come back to it when some issues have been resolved or some cool mods have been made. Mind you, I expected a lot of issues, so it's not like I was going in blind - I can understand someone who thought everything was going to be perfect might be upset. This doesn't make me a sucker - it makes me someone who is curious, likes sim-city and has some discretionary funding to indulge that curiosity at launch.

I'm also someone who bought Minecraft back in the day before it was much at all.
