Eternal Darkness Fifth Extension - GRANTED 12/20/12

Lmao... I just got it. Oh well I have to watch my back :D

I didn't do it on purpose tho.
3:33 was a number of great significance in Eternal Darkness. The game even begins with it on Alex's digital clock when she wakes up. It's one of the first images you see in the game, the 3:33 on the clock.

It's also half of the number 666 -- the Mark of the Beast -- much like Alex's last name, Roivas, is "savior" spelled backwards.

EDIT: Whoops, looks like you got it, misread ya. :)

I didn't get to play Eternal Darkness yet so I had no idea why people were shocked he posted it at 3:33.

But that's really creepy lol.

the wide delta that separates business from art is made very apparent during discussions like this. if nintendo funds this, it will be a patronage goodwill building project that they know they'll probably take a bit of a loss on that will be made up when the next mario kart is released.

nintendo's not hurting for money, and though finances need to be a consideration, not every short-term not profitable endeavor is necessarily bad for long-term.

Yeah, we're living in a totally different era when it comes to screwing with people. The potential is staggering.

"Achievement Unlocked: You're Fucking Awful At This!"

Even something as simple as repeatedly telling you your batteries are dead, or getting fake friend invites that damage you if you accept them. Dumping the resolution down to 480p (ED already had a trick like that, yeah?).

That's good, this thread though is making me want to go on eBay and buy Eternal Darkness though lol.
I'd totally recommend it. Play it with the sound up in a dark room. Know as little as you can going in. The game is a constant series of discoveries. It's terrifying when you do something in the game and you can tell by a shift in the game's atmosphere that something absolutely terrible might be down the hall.

Yeah I heard the game tricks you, like make the GameCube controller stop working, and just do some crazy stuff, I'll check eBay now.

It does try to trick you, which is cool, but I'm not even talking about the sanity effects. Those are just gimmicks, really. What's really eerie and effective about the game is how at any moment, the world can change. You go down one hall, you do something in the next room, you hear a bloodcurdling scream from the previous hallway. An eerie music starts playing. And you have no choice but to go back down that hall... It seems like something every survival horror game does, on paper, but the way ED does it is so unnerving. Every trip back to the mansion was an exercise in paranoia...

I refuse to get hyped until it's confirmed

That sounds epic, yeah I got to get this game.

I don't know if I should buy it from eBay or hope they put it on the eShop, I could also check some stores if they have it.

Dudebro, My Shit is Fucked Up So I Got to Shoot/Slice You II: It's Straight-Up Dawg Time
Don't read anything into this. Nintendo let the old trademark die because they failed to file the necessary paperwork before a certain point of time (six years after the mark was granted). They the forget to mention the prior use in commerce when they filed a new trademark, which would have granted them the trademark immediately, so they have to renew every six months, even though I believe they could just file paperwork proving use in commerce at any time. So I don't really know what Nintendo is doing here but they seem incompetent.

So, in short: Nintendo's lawyers are dumb, and there probably isn't a new Eternal Darkness.

Retro can't make everything !

I am amazed that the same developer remade 2 Nintendo franchises of remarkable quality as good or better of their previous entries and with very different characteristics.

I can see they doing ED and it would be fucking glorious!

I enjoyed Eternal Darkness, but as far as survival horror games go I don't think it was as good as Silent Hill 1-3. Still, it's worth playing and I look forward to the sequal.

EDIT: Also, could they be doing this just to get the original available on the Virtual Console? I'm not sure how all that works.

I would love Retro to develop ED2... but I want the writer of the original game working on 2. I'm not a fan of totally different teams making sequels to beloved properties.

Man, what if Retro were making Eternal Darkness 2?

The amount of awesome breaks my head... cannot calculate.

If something like this is going on with Retro... WiiU insta-buy! Did I say didn't want a WiiU before? Yeah? Well, I'm perfectly willing to eat crow for Retro. Don't judge me!

Retro is definitely doing Metroid Prime 4.

From what we know there is no chance in hell they're doing Metroid Prime 4, mainly because they've stated again and again there wont be another "prime" game as that was made as a trilogy.
Now, a brand new Metroid saga on the other hand is possible!

Fifth Extension would be a pretty cool subtitle.

Hah, I honestly thought that's what it was and this thread was confirming a sequel.

I really hope they do end up doing something with Eternal Darkness. I really love the game. I really want to be hyped but I don't know.

Flesh, bone. Bound together with the oddest magical incantation. This wretched book is where it all began so long ago. Before time, before humanity.

I used to LOVE this game, even memorized a lot of the speech. I would buy a sequel in a heartbeat.

Everyone goes on and on about detective GAF. Well c'mon, how come we don't have one shred of an idea of what Retro's working on.

Is anyone still manning the cameras on Retro's offices? Lol

Was the first one actually good? Never played it

It's the only game I've played that does Lovecraft right, even though it's technically a Lovecraft pastiche. (And yes, I own and have played The Call of Cthulu:DCotE. It wishes it was anywhere close to that good.)

ED means I will always have a considerable measure of respect for Denis Dyack, even after the Too Human debacle and his absurd behavior. The game is a fucking classic.

Why. Assuming this isn't a joke.

Platinum Games has some people who has worked on RE but I would like Retro to do the atmosphere they know to work it and try a different genre and *P hasnt done a compelling story in the whole time they have been around. Entertaining to watch but compare the writing on Eternal Darkness which was great with any of the *P games and you'll see they probably wont do well on that aspect and also I would like the art team of Retro to handle things. I like Platinum Games but their art direction can be a hit or miss.

Which is kinda cool P* is makin W101. That kinda light hearted game has no boundaries. The story could get as crazy and wacky as they want lol.

Some of it's gameplay does not stand the test of time, and it's graphics can be a little rough around the edges. But the story, voice-acting, writing, general concept, sound and it's super in-depth magic system totally make it worth playing. It's also the type of game that starts off slowly but gets better and better the more you play.

It's a PRIME example of a game's concept being so ripe to remake or make a sequel for, with modern advances, that it could be fucking incredible.

Redeye did an article about this years ago (in reference to REZ and SEGA). Nobody listened. I think Sony is the only company that understands the importance of flagship games, which probably comes from their wider media background.

Yup, I just beat it a few days ago and it was phenomenal in terms of concept. The game play is a little shitty (like a lot of early survival horror games) but everything that surrounds it is incredible. The final two sections fucking blew my mind. Such a good ending.

I really liked ED. It was only a middling game, but it really shined in story and atmosphere. It looked really nice for it's time too, with excellent camera views.

It's also just the type of game Nintendo needs. Sure, it won't light the charts on fire (like RE4), but high quality, quirky games help to differentiate the WiiU from other systems. There are some interesting possible gamepad uses as well.

It's the only game I've played that does Lovecraft right, even though it's technically a Lovecraft pastiche. (And yes, I own and have played The Call of Cthulu:DCotE. It wishes it was anywhere close to that good.)

Have you played Shadow of the Comet?

It's a really old PC point & click adventure game. I first played it last year. Very clunky as far as those games go, but it's atmosphere holds up surprisingly well. Play it with a walkthrough to avoid frustration.

Eternal Darkness 2 would be great for the Wii U. And, honestly, I can't think of many Nintendo properties better suited to capture the imagination of the Western "core" gamer. If they can recreate the same quality as the first game, all that is left is marketing.

Dead Space is a great example of how horror still works in the West. Even if EA is making it more action, Dead Space didn't get as popular as it is because people thought it was an action game. It was horror and it did well.
