Vita OLED burn in.

As some people have mentionned it, I figure this is the best place to ask: are a few Mura effect splotches normal on a Vita? I've had them since day 1 and only notice them on black loading screens.

Completely normal, and completely distracting.

it is very common if not universally experienced to varying degrees

Good to know, I was wondering if that shit was common.

Seriously, it's hard not to notice after you've seen it once.

I freaking hate burn-in, it's the principal reason for why I bought an LCD and not a plasma, even if the tech got better.

There's nothing on my Vita yet, but now I'll fear playing my old PSX titles in 4:3 because of them black bars. :(

No need to worry. I play mine daily since launch and there is no burn in. Just be careful about your usage patterns. Don't use it as a photo frame or digital clock when it is plugged in, for example, and it'll be fine.

Why would Sony be so dumb to use a screen technology on a portable gaming device that can be affected with burn in or allow you to use it as often or with any app you please.

For the same reason why phones use OLED. Infinite contrast, some energy savings, no ghosting.

Because it has infinite black depth, theoretically less motion trailing, and wider colour gamut for more vibrant colours. All things that make games look better.

The problem is, well, burn in and in some people's eyes, its a risk they're willing to pay. Its like why some people still use CRTs for gaming despite all of the small problems they have.

All mobile OLEDs ghost. Its pretty obvious they use sample and hold, without black frame insertion, much like how a LCD does.

Because as long as you give people shiny colors they don't care how the screen sucks.

Wait. If the browser is a major cause of the burn in. Why didn't Sony redesign the browser not to have those bars?

Why would you leave a handheld on standby for long enough to burn-in an image, anyway?

Unless this happens after a really short amount of time, in which case, damn.

Its not necessary to leave a handheld on standby long enough to have burn-in...

Basically this. The motion resolution of LCD sucks for gaming - especially 60fps side-scrolling games where the trails and blur are the stuff of nightmares. It's the reason I replaced my LED-backlit LCD with a plasma last year.

But unfortunately other technologies also have their faults - in this case burn-in. As long as you're conscious of it and don't browse for too long etc, you should be fine.

That's not burn in, it happened to my old AMOLED phone.

It fell on the floor and eventually after looking like the picture the screen stopped lighting up. I'd call Sony asap.

That's just an example, no one said browsers were the major cause.

Mura effect and this makes me worried about OLED televisions that are set to come out soon.

Normal and they seem to get smaller over time.
Thanks for the answers guys, that somehow makes me feel better about it. I first noticed them in VLR, forgot about it after finishing VLR and playing a lot of P4 but when I launched the MGS collection last week, they were very visible.

Well, I've been using my Japanese launch Vita for over a year and have yet to see any burn-in.

Although I never use the Vita Web Browser and always turn off the screen when I finish (or am in between) a game, therefore never let the screen idle on the static Vita menu.

Come on , i have a vita day 1 playing the shit out of it and no problem !
VITA screen is glorious.

hahah seriously ?

Tech wise? Both are cool. 3D is cool and so is OLED colours/true blacks. I've had a Super AMOLED phone for a while now so it isn't as WOW to me, but its a very nice screen. Images looks nice on it.

But image retention? That's too much, fuck that. That just makes me pissed. It's not a massive deal, but its an extra burden.

Sony needs to start releasing some dynamic backgrounds for Vita ...

So how can you prevent this? Like I said earlier, I don't leave my Vita on for a long time on a single screen. I have it set to fall asleep after 5 minutes. Am I okay with doing that?

Well if OLED tv's suffer from burn in then I'm not going to get one. Which is the same reason I bought a Sony LCD screen rather then plasma.

Avoid 4:3 aspect ratio, since the black bars could cause issues if playing a game, or watching a movie for a while. Also, avoid having static images on your screen for long periods of time, and make sure to turn off your screen when not in use.

Its funny you mention that, I only noticed one little swirly thing when loading up mgs collection. it bothers me, but seems normal.

You can't "prevent this" completely, there's some panel roulette here. The best thing you can do is try to minimise the length static elements stay on the screen. What's the maximum length? Who knows...

Hey if you can't see/don't care about its problems good for you but all the OLEDs have these problems, it's within the technology that isn't mature. The day OLEDs won't have burn-in, image retention, ghosting, discoloration and whatnot will be a good day but until then it will remain a subpar technology.

Oh god. Oh god no. Not this! Now I'll be freaking out every time I turn on the device... Good thing I never use the browser. First time I saw the Mura effect I was shitting my pants for a week.

I had the same problem and thread but people on neogaf thought i was imagining shit. Its the brower, don't use it until sony allows the GUI to fade.

It's funny: ever since I got eye floaters I learned to deal with crap on screens

it's much worse when you've got crap in your eyes I guess, lol. Puts things into perspective.

All screens are faulty in some way. It's a bummer but I think that in most cases you'd be able to look past it. I stayed away from my PSP for a while because it got crazy dust under the screen and now I just play and ignore the specs (the equivalent to like 5 dead pixels lets say).

Gen X

Trust no one. Eat steaks.
Launch Vita here also and I used to use the web browser all the time. Now I use it a couple of times a week if I am lucky. No burn in here.

I'd be more worried about burn in from game huds that you play a lot of. EG I used to play 2-3 full battery charges of Uncharted a day when I first got it, surprised there was no burn in from that hud.

Yeah, it really comes down to what's important to you. The OLED screen is glorious but I'm incredibly paranoid about image retention etc. and would shit my pants in anger if it happened to me. The 3DS XL screen has its own issues but it seems like a more sensible choice for a gaming device.

What's a mura effect?

It's like a fingerprint that an OLED screen has, it's different on each screen. The best way to see it is to be in a dark room and turn on the phone/vita and look at a plain black image with the backlight on full, you should see the mura effect then. I've never noticed it unless I'm playing in bed with my lights off and even then it's only during loading screens.

Well crap. So much for OLED replacing Plasma as the technology of the future and avoiding the few problems those sets had. Fuck.

Damn one more thing for me to be paranoid about other than the non user replaceable battery, hopefully they can fix this with the inevitable PSVita 2000

things to do if you worry about burn in.

- Do not use a static screen for several hours.
- Make sure you turn off the screen when doing Firmware updates. Because they can take long time to download and install, so the screen can burn in. (Turn on Wi-Fi. Go to Updates. Begin update process and click power button. While screen will be on, the PS Logo will still be lighted up)
- Do not use the browser for several hours in a row.
- You can minimize your risks by keeping brightness at the lowest acceptable level (i.e. don't crank up the brightness if the middle setting is adequate for you), as more brightness = more stress on the OLEDs, More stress = higher probability of failure.
- Turn off your vita when you don´t use it.

but again, that is only if you really are worried.

It's just a toy so if it breaks after few years i'll get a new one. I'd be more pissed off if it happened to TV or computer display since they will be lot more expensive.

for what is worth: I get burn-in on my monitor for a while now. I removed all the desktop icons and whenever I notice something getting "stuck" I just leave it on a white screen for a while or something and it ussually goes away the next day.

Hell no Plasmas are still better at everything than OLED specially on image retention/burn-in because it's a much more seasoned tech

The only thing is that you can't make plasmas the size of a phone screen (or computer screens for what matters).

oled screens need to adopt the same burn in protection that plasmas use. pixel orbiter works wonders at stopping hud burn in.

I'd rather keep my device for more than a few years. If my green DSi XL were to break tomorrow, it'd be very hard to replace at a reasonable price.
