Gears of War Judgement |OT| Brothers from the beginning, Bros till the end

I actually have sort of warmed up to the multiplayer. I like Overrun and Domination. I feel like I am not using the Booshka correctly though as I cannot get a kill with it and I get killed by it frequently.

Still despise the player skins and the fact that the vast majority of the character skins are locked behind a paywall.

WOW, doing the academy on hardcore by yourself just shows off how utter utter dog shit the ai is. Your on a pretty strict time limit and the ai just hang back and its all on you to run through all the enemies in the amount of time you have to do it. Dogshit.

I played Gears 1 MP up until 3 AM this morning. God damn is that game SOOOOOOOOOOOO satisfying. Textures still look great, but the animation sure has come a long way over the years.

The player feedback, sound and gore in that game is utterly delicious.

The more i play of it the more it feels like an expansion pack. I guess this is what people were getting at when they were saying this was a contract filling game.

I def agree, it feels like an expansion pack.... But is that necessarily a bad thing?

Expansion pack or not, it's still a great game. It probably should have been cheaper than a regular game, but that's Microsoft's fault...

If you directly hit with the Booshka bombs they instantly explode and kill, otherwise they bounce around on a timer. I suck horrible ass with it as well.

I find it much easier getting kills when deflecting them off walls at players in cover who think they're safe. like the digger, it's a good anti-cover weapon.

A good place to practice is on OverRun with the soldier. Cole starts with it and you have infinite ammo. you can pretty much sit there and fire shots non-stop

Campaign is fun. To me it basically feels like Horde with cutscenes interspersed. I'm thinking that's why they cut Horde as a multiplayer mode.

Yea so I tried out that whole 2-piecing crap in that video a few pages back... yea... if you want 20 kills a game in TDM, 2-piece is your best friend. I thought they got rid of that because everyone hated it in GoW2 and it wasn't in GoW3, why is it back.

I don't get frustrated at this game, I never lose with my team, but it doesn't feel satisfying. Playing to 50 is so dumb, power weapons everywhere. Kills aren't as satisfying. It doesn't matter if you jump of the top of streets and no scope superman a kid with the longshot on the way down because there is a reticule now and the bullet is straight as an arrow. I'm not finding the fun I find with the other Gears games. Overrun saves this game big time.

Just finished the campaign and Aftermath. Whoever said Judgment was Gears of War Arcade is spot on. That said, I actually liked the campaign a lot. The story was self-contained and made sense, the environments and art were my favorite in this series since Gears 1, and the declassified missions were fun and challenging. Playing Aftermath right after just underscores how different Judgment is (the latter has almost no banter in it - really missed that a lot more than I thought I would). I wish they'd kept it this level in Gears 3 since playing it just underscores the fact that it belongs in a different game (they probably could have explained Baird's and Cole's backstory with Paduk and Sophia via some collectables).

Ranking the campaign: 1>J>2>3

I'm having fun with MP (only played aversarial thus far). If you treat it as a "Gears-esque" game and play it the way that it's designed to be played (re: running around like an idiot with your thumb forever hovering over the B button) you can enjoy it for what it is. And yep, I know that that's not saying much, but it's still fundamentally a Gears game, which is to say, a beautifully controlling TPS with satisfying gunplay.

The map count and the severe lack of push-and-pull map balance/tension are the main detractors and let's not kid ourselves; they are big detractors.

Best Multiplayer in the series thus far.

Matches are the gnasher fests they've been in the past, and I've so far experience little to no lag.

Maps are great too.

the more I play this game the more I like it. There's a difference between being different and being bad. Judgment does what it does well. All in, there's quite a bit of content in the game...it's just very segmented. The mp will eventually have 12 maps, so I'm looking forward to those days. Execution should also add depth to the mp offerings. FFA is good fun.

It doesn't surprise me that Gaf dislikes it. Same thing happens with every Gears thread around here.

Im playing Overun only, so 4 maps, maybe 6, for one mode for quite some time is pathetic.

But for now, i like it, and yet again, its just a question of time when will become boring as hell, because for now, playing on 4 maps is OKish... But 4 maps for one mode, i mean DAMN! ONLY FOUR MAPS! AND THIS IS A SEQUEL?

Looks like a bigger DLC.

You have a franchise that has a strong MP following, you release it with 4 maps you split the community in three with the changes, GOW3 hit the perfect spot with Gears and with some Judgement traits it could have been amazing, to top it all off you sell back withheld Maps as a Season pass!

come on people, following blindness like sheep will encourage them more for this type of practice

Gaf absolutely adored GOW3 immensely and many people loved what they did to bring them back from the depths of GOW2, gameplay improved ten fold and stayed true to the unique franchise formula and it certainly never had a lack of content.

Awesome! I am glad we atleast have the names and confirmation that 6 of the upcoming maps will be for TDM and such. Hopefully these maps are as good as the 4 that launched with the game.

This right here is why FTP models will creep into full priced games, content doesnt matter as long as they have your soul.

You do realize that the 1st 2 DLC maps are going to be free for everyone, along with execution, right? Also Gears 3 had a season pass. It only launched with 10 maps and then they sold you maps. I guess everyone that liked Gears 3 were just blind sheep.

So can someone explain Survival to me?

I bought the game yesterday - I have a mate buying it today. So I assume that it will be pretty similar to Horde? Is there still fortifications and currency? 50 waves? Bosses?

It's 10 waves of generally harder things. It's more like overrun except a limit to the incoming enemies and some downtime between waves. If you haven't tried overrun then basically it's class based and the fortifications are premade, but the enginner can drop a turret and repair them. You are defending a locust hole and there are 2 more sections if you fail. You need to beat the 10th wave without losing everything.

I like it a lot, but it is pretty different from horde.

missed the point, these are taken from GOWJ on disc.

Haven, one of the "Free" maps was played at a community night 6 months ago, why would anyone be happy with EPIC since these free maps
obviously got withheld, launched with 4 maps and slapped with a $60 (US) $80 (Aus) price tag.

logic?

not enough slimmy practice? Warzone mode

this apparently is activated by using some simple button pushes at the menu

I have said this before, GOWJ is not a terribly bad game , its medicore at best (for Huge GOW fans, yes) shady business practice seems at the utmost apparent here.

I know you hate Judgment but Gears 3 did this same shit with Azura, Rust Lung and Blood Drive. It's still cruddy either way, but it's not unexpected at this point.

Dont completely hate GOWJ, its just not very Gears like its has stript away so may great GOW traits and adding in random elements
from other titles so i see it in a completely separate light compared to previous titles.

Its the lack of content, maps, modes that rub all Gears fans me the wrong way, Versus Booster pack was scummy the way it was handled.

Execution mode for GOWJ needs to be heavily modified with loadouts, spawns for it to resemble a good GOW experience like GOW3, it has been confirmed at PAX only smoke and stim will be available at spawn so im glad that they listen to feedback, but alot needs to be done with player and weapon spawns to make it work correctly.

How did you do this?

Idk, These are not from me

Boomshield is near invincibility. You can drop frags at their feet and they live. Have to flank or catch a lucky angle.

Hit 4 100% headshots with Gnasher and nada. In one match walked up to an AFK player with Hardaim and took 3 shots with Gnasher. That video ain't playing around with pellets missing.

Gaf likes to harp on and on about the industry this, industry that. Honestly, there are people who like to debate that shit on forums and then there are those who spend much more time actually playing games. I make plenty of money. I like Gears. I will buy what they sell me. Who gives a fuck if I'm part of some problem? Just give me more Gears.

Finished the main campaign last night. Offft, did I enjoy this game. The actual core shooting is so dialled in, very satisfying. OReviously I cited my favourite declassifieds but there were two last night that really blew me away. The
level with the high winds pushing you across the map, forcing you to run against it to get to cover, very clever, want to see more dynamic weather play into gameplay next gen
and
where all the lights are out and it gives you a scorcher. Damn, very fun
. Can't believe how much I loved this. I definitely see the bulletstorm influence. Not through the actual gameplay, but the design philosophy behind the gameplay this time, it was really compelling to just play on and try for more stars.

Biggest regret? Playing on normal. Usually it takes me awhile to settle back into gears and I'm not the best player but I think hardcore would have been a better place to start this time, I found myself activating some declassified, looking forward to the challenge, and then just mowing on through anyway.

Reminds me just how much I like gears. Really hope it's not the end. Regardless of the story, I still find that core gameplay fantastic and I think judgment proves there's more to be done with it, and what you can implement around it. Also, fuck yea, Paduk, I loved that guy. Makes me want to see the pendulum wars, just to see more of the UIR. Aftermath tonight.

Thats some shady bizzness having all those maps and modes locked on the disc. Just erggghhh. Come on epic this is some shady issh man.

You know what - for all the shit the game is copping for some questionable game design choices - The shooting and encounter design are among the best I've played this generation.

Also loving the Breechshot.

Really liked aftermath, jsut fired through it there. It would be nice if they had thrown declassifies in there too, but I understand they were trying for a more authentic GOW3 feel. I would love a game set post GOW3 about Paduk. That info he gives about
Hendrick
at the end, I'd like to see what happens in that world once the locust are gone and all humans are left with is each other again, after all the awful things they've done to each other before. Really enjoyed this game, I'd put it on par with 3 as my fav.

Also loving the Breechshot.

My favourite new gun by far.

Finished the Campaign and got in a good bit of matches from Friday to Saturday.

Definitely liked the concept they had with the Campaign and the Declassified Missions on Hardcore, will try to make some time to play Aftermath later today.

With the multiplayer I actually still have to master the new feel, memorize the new maps to decide where to run to at the start of each round for each team, etc - and I'm starting off the bat with rifles instead of Gnasher since I can always pick those up off of dead players, and I've won the majority of my battles with my rifles with the decreased Gnasher range.

So Gaf!

You sure about that being on-disc and actually playable? I thought all the modders found what there was to be found some time back.

Finished the main campaign. The declassified stuff was great, actually kept the campaign interesting. Usually I'd get bored about halfway through a Gears campaign, but the declassified stuff managed to keep it interesting - it also makes me want to try the campaign on Insane.

The fourth instalment in the Gears of War series is a prequel and as such cannot match the launch week sales of its hugely popular predecessor which sold 4 times more in its first week.

This is from the PAL Chart Sales for Week 12.
So depressing :/

Judgment isn't going to even come close. Gears 3 was packed with so much goddamn content most people didn't even get to dig in significantly. That's alright. I'm sure their expectations were around the same.

The official thread for a Gears of War game has stalled out at 35 pages. That's all you really need to know about how popular this game is overall.

But I'm enjoying it.

depressing indeed.

edit: obvioulsy in the next quote he compared directly with God of War, lol.
I am a fan of both series, I think both are amazing. What's your point? Should I make an avatar half Kratos half Marcus so what I say is valid???
I knew from the start both were going to dissapoint in terms of sells but never thought Gears Judgment would sell 1/4th, that's all.

Edit: and btw I say depressing because most games seem to be underperforming including God of War with some exceptions like Tomb Raider.

Sales number are unsurprising given the populations I've seen when starting campaign and versus maps. Maybe a little lower than expected. The game mechanic changes spearheaded by People Can Fly, the content on disc and DLC misgivings must be rearing their ugly heads. Maybe some credit can be given to marketing, too.

The sheer quantity of content available with Gears of War 3 made Judgment look incredibly sparse. PXG mentioned that porting 3's MP modes into Judgment would have helped - I wholeheartedly agree. It wouldn't have fixed everyone's gripes with the rest of the game but it was one of ODST's successful points that I'm surprised Epic passed up.

I just started another run of the Campaign. The complaint that it's short is puzzling given how much variety there is in every encounter. The arenas are well-thought out and balanced for whatever Locusts are thrown your way. Pure TPS action. What I liked about Gears 1 is that is was short and presented significant replay value. Maybe those people critical of the campaign wanted more vehicle and on-rails shooting sections. Or perhaps Baird should be shouting something like MARIAAAA! ala Dom in Gears 2?

Because we know everyone loves a TPS for it's vehicle sections, rail shooting and storytelling.

And the info that publishers will glean from this is "Well let's never do these all encompassing "we're including as much as possible" versions because anything after that isn't considered a good value"

Sure you are a fan of both series. 74 posts in the Gow:A OT vs 4 posts here, which 3 of them is to say how depressing is the sales. And for sure I'll find a post from you about your concerns how depressing Gow:A sales, right?

btw.

Gears 3 = 6 days of sales
Gears J = 3 days

September release vs March release

10x less marketing, second team development. And even with 1/4 sales of Gears 3, Judgment took the #1 spot.
