Hey, remember when Scribblenauts Unlimited was coming out in Europe?

So Scribblenauts Unlimited was released in America on November 13th 2012, but us poor Europeans had to wait until February 8th 2013.

Then on February 4th, Nintendo announced there would be a delay due to.. something. They never explained what. Rumours went round that the UK English did not work, but there's still not been an official comment.

It's now 53 days past the original EU release date and there's been nothing said about a new date. Not a thing! At this point we can't even be sure it's actually ever coming out.

Did anyone ever find out why?
Were there any journalists that did journalism about it?

Fake edit: I am of course refering to the Wii U and 3DS versions. It came out on Steam.

Review code works fine. No idea why it was delayed.

There's probably some 'offensive' word/object in the game that needs to be removed. Nintendo is terrified of 'think of the children' type publicity.

They recalled a Mario Party game because it had the word 'spastic' in.

Remember the Sambo controversy?

Not on WiiU and 3DS. Not saying it'd be huge for either, but it's still advertised in GAME with a very vague "Coming Soon". Interestingly enough, they're advertising that and not Luigi 2, Animal Crossing, Donkey Kong etc.

I used the magic of... well, friends in other regions to buy the game on Steam back in December. It's pretty good, would buy for a relatively reasonable price on 3DS. No object creator is bullshit though.

I bought it for $7,5 few months back for Steam. I can't really see the appeal of it coming out now. It's not even that good of a game. Would be interesting to see why it was delayed though.

GG Nintendo. One of the only interesting Wii U games right now and it's not even out in Europe. This, along with Nintendo Land, are the only two current Wii U games that even remotely interest me. How can Nintendo mess this up so badly?

'Spastic' is actually a really offensive, derogatory word over here in the UK, so I don't blame Nintendo for recalling Mario Party (i think it was one of the DS games) based in that.

I remember Totilo put together that article mere months after joining Kotaku, thereby spitting in the face of his fans here on GAF who'd hoped his presence would improve the blog's quality of content.

Yes, indeed. Which makes the whole thing even more odd.
Yeah the Steam version is published by Warner Bros though, so something weird going on with the EU Nintendo version. It was all but released but recalled a day or two before official launch. Odd.

I thought it was delayed to better space out Ninty's Wii U releases after Rayman got delayed half the year. Released fine everywhere Nintendo weren't publishing it, so it was just the platforms/countries under their control that were affected.

That's real odd, I've played, enjoyed and finished the game on steam by now. I didn't even know that it isn't out for my console brothers. I wonder if they are holding it back to do some form of 'big push' for the WiiU and release it and a bunch of big titles all together. I dunno though, strange.

Did anyone get a copy from Amazon? From what I hear, they sent them out before Nintendo issued the recall.

Anyway, the worst part of all this is just no explanation or even acknowledgment.

Completely off-topic (sorry), but why is it a "fake" edit, when you did indeed add that line later on? (as evidenced by nofi's quote)? :D

I only used it to amuse myself. :)

El Capitan Todd
I was so looking forward to play it with my wife on the big tv screen, continuing by myself on the bed before sleeping... :(

It's listed as coming out on 19/04 over at Shop To, so make of that what you will.

It's really perplexing, I read somewhere it was because the English in the game was US English and not UK English, meaning some words such as Colour etc were not right? That might explain why it's out in other PAL countries.

If anyone has the euro version if they could check some words it'd be very helpful, if this is the problem it'd be pretty major for a game involving words

Surely if it was just a problem with some words (colour/color) they could have issued a day one patch. Most of my U games have had one anyway.

It seems extreme to recall all the shipments back from the stores and only the "spastic" incident warranted that before.

Which was a reaction to a media outcry which happened before. Happened to a braintraining clone which used the word retard too.

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
The oddest thing is, not only was it available briefly for about one morning on the European eShop, (I made a GAF thread about it), several friends I know actually received boxed copies of the game from Amazon UK.

I know it's out on Steam cheap, but I'm still hoping the Wii U version comes out. Nintendo Characters make all the difference.

Workshop users have recreated the Nintendo characters for the Steam version (as well as pretty much every popular videogamer character ever), they started deleting them at first but now it doesn't look like they care.

It's been delayed due to some localization standards. It'll be out when that's fixed. There are people working in it. Those standards have nothing to do with inappropriate words or adding u's to words too make them British (that'd be insane if that was the reason.) It's out on Steam right now in the EU, so if it was that problem, then those words would be in the Steam version.

There were a lot of bugs in mine.

Do tell.

"Helped put together" would be more accurate, yes:

Stephen Totilo and Brian Crecente contributed to this report.

I seem to recall Totilo's name originally being attached as author, but even Archive.org doesn't go back to the article's original state (earliest snapshot is five days after publication), so I can't be sure. My apologies if I'm incorrect.
