Battlefield 4: Reveal Trailer At 11 PM PDT, March 26th

No WAY is BF4 getting a new engine. They put so much money into FB2, they built it to be next-gen ready, and if it's an even beefier engine it'll run like turds on current gen platforms. An updated FB2? Sure. FB3? Nu-uh.

well, they can just update FB2 with the weather, make destruction more detailed and call it FB3 :D

I don't think it not really being a new engine precludes them from renaming it.

Just look at "Creation Engine".

They say it's a "brand new engine" that's "built from the ground up". No way. Maybe they'll rename FB2 to 3 for marketing reasons but it won't be brand new.

I hope we get some good material to update my avatar with. Still curious to see how they balance out the navies considering there's a huge gap there which is why I hope it's 2020 and DICE can make more unique Chinese ships if they're part of the naval maps. I'd actually like if it was asymmetrical in that way where different nations have different advantages with China focusing on good subs and anti-ship missiles, etc.

Obviously balance comes first, but it's hard to imagine WWIII with just a few ships. :p

Well I mean DICE called Frostbite 2 built from the ground up despite harvesting a bunch out of Frostbite 1 as well, so I would totally believe DICE getting up there and saying that.

All engines take code from previous ones, all numbered monikers are somewhat misleading. Frostbite 3 will borrow heavily from Frostbite 2, which borrowed bits from the original Frostbite.

Especially from a PR perspective. Sounds a lot better to say it's FB3 to make the game sound more and more like a true sequel.

Didn't Bethesda say that about Skyrim's engine too? Yet, it was just the old engine in a new coat, but with the same quirks.

There is really no such thing now as a "brand new engine" per se; they are always built on top of another engine.

Aye. Which worries me about the game itself.

Really do think this'll be a glorified map pack with a weapon re-skin. In fact, I reckon 80% of the arsenal will be identical to BF3.

I kind of don't see the point of unveiling BF4 on PC honestly, especially if they are proclaiming this to be a next-gen game (given PC is generation agnostic).

If they do that I can't see BF4 being cross-gen. BF3 really didn't run that well on consoles, how will another serious upgrade help things? I guess DICE are EA's golden boy so who knows what they'll pull.

Right, and it also makes it look like they built a new engine for next-gen specifically instead of using their end of gen engine from last gen.

Well the things that are upgraded are largely inherited from other companies (and built on top of by DICE) that make sure they run on current gen.

Like Lighting and Physics upgrades will both be heavily driven by Havok and Geomerics in addition to DICE, and they build systems that can scale all the way to mobile.

Weather would presumably be almost entirely DICE though.

yea no way they built a new engine from scratch that quickly considering how long it took FB2 to come out for bf3, just more marketing talk to convert the cods

Would it be possible to turn features off on current gen consoles like on a PC? They could talk it up as "exclusive next-gen graphical features" and keep it nearly identical to BF3 on consoles that way.

I know based on there past GDC presentations that constructing destructible buildings was a huge task. Took a lot of man hours and is the reason we saw so few types of buildings. My guess is that they completely changed that way destruction is handled.

Either that or they got a dedicated team to build destructible building assets for the game.

Yeah that's what I expect them to do actually.

On consoles for example, Battlefield 3 does no realtime global illumination, whereas on PC it does.

For the physics, since Havok 4 is 10x less memory intensive and twice as fast (along with removing performance spikes), I imagine that might be able to be ported over to a sufficient level (at least from a gameplay perspective). There might be like a lot less physics chunks, but they still blow up the right things.

I doubt it. One of the main emphasis at DICE seems to be improving workflow. They already had made changes such as deferred rendering from BC2 to BF3.

Just a wild guess, but in BF3 Alpha/Beta? the ground was significantly more destructible and possibly utilized different mapping technique. It was however definitely not ready for release. They might of built on and expanded on that system.

Some are brand new but most are not. People who believe a second version of an engine was made from the ground up probably do not know how much work it takes to make an engine in the first place. The engine COD uses was created many years ago but the changes made are so great that you could probably call it a new engine. Not in the sense of built from the ground up but because of the changes made. Though I do not work for IW or Treyarch so I do not know how much they have changed but it is quite visible.

That is why I said per se.

Can we expect it to be a big step forward graphically in relation to 3?

As I said in an earlier thread, a good number of people, me included, will be playing this on a next gen console, following on from BF3 on a current gen one.

In the respect the leap will be MASSIVE.

Yeah, FB 2.0 did not scale well to consoles. Y'all are in for a treat.

Hopes of a non-Call of Duty-centric-Battlfield game fading quickly...

http://battlefieldo.com/threads/eas-attempt-to-bring-call-of-duty-fans-to-battlefield.9663/

"EA have made a bold step to bring in Call of Duty players. How? By inviting known, million+ YouTube subscribed Call of Duty commentators to the event in favour of some of the most hardcore Battlefield'ers. A necessary and somewhat sly tactic to bring in the competition's audience. EA know that if they go all out on these famous CoD YouTubers, that the current #1 best selling FPS game will surely hand over some of their fan base.

It makes me, personally, sick. Nothing against the incredibly YouTube famous CoD commentators going to this event, you obviously prefer Call of Duty and that's ok don't get me wrong, but in your place could be someone much, much more deserving. Someone who won't play the game a few times then throw it down when your temporary promotional job is done. Right? Someone who actually loves the Battlefield games and plays them out of choice.

What's more of a hit to the people not invited is that the CoD commentators will supposedly get exclusive Battlefield 4 gameplay to put on their YouTube channels, which comes with a "premium" CPM on all ads. Now if these rumours are anything to go by, that sucks."

Oh absolutely. But I hope the PC version at least surpasses Crysis 3 as the graphics champion.

Probably not. I think we'll have to wait until the next one for that where they can 1) finally cut off 360/ps3 completely and 2) they'll be a lot more used to ps4/720 and what they can do.

That's what I was thinking. All cross gen games will suffer one way or another.

Makes perfect sense. It's a good move. More companies should realize this.

Aye, my brother has a high end rig so whenever I go back home I see it in its full glory. It's almost a different game. The lighting and player count differences are crazy.

Especially for tank drivers were looking in the distance is most important, you can't see shit on consoles because its so blurry.

Because the PC version will probably look the best anyway.

PC might be generation agnostic, but technology isn't.

Obviously. However, the point still stands: If you want this to be a next gen engine then it should be able to run on a next gen platform. PC games have mostly been console graphics+options refine visuals even more+non-restricted framerate.

I could understand their desire to show off BF3 on PC first given how large the gap had become between existing HD consoles and PC tech by 2011. But now, it is best to show off the baseline where PC players with sufficiently powerful hardware get to push certain visual settings to 11.

You show off the best version of your game when revealing every time.
