Millionaire tries to get $829 via kickstarter to send daughter to RPG maker camp?

Her best friend Julie Brown is really annoying...

A youtube death threat? Getting the FBI involved? Really?

The FBI will probably very politely tell them to fuck off and explain how they have much better things to be doing, like breaking down the doors of pirates.

Eh, Paypal. Im a big fan of some of the team involved, ill just buy it at launch.

Paypal is something else you should avoid like the plague.

Arkham

The Amiga Brotherhood
Kickstarter responded and said that Mackenzie continues to have their full support.

Can't that and their other statements of support be construed as endorsement thus breaking their own guidelines? I've seen at least three or four examples of that hypocrisy.

Youtube death threats is probably true, but then again... it's Youtube. FBI is probably bullshit.

At least they have another way for you to donate if you want to.

Yeah it's cool as long as they meet their goal on kickstarter so they actually get the money, which they will so many of us could remove our pledges.

I don't know if this affects the higher money goals or if they will included paypal in that at the end.

Oh god. Now Kotaku too. This just went up.

The funny thing is, I found this at the bottom of Jezebel's page, where I was going to write in about the story. Seems like they'd want to cover someone seemingly exploiting feminism to make a quick buck.
Bullshit.

She makes a living hounding debtors and has raised millions in capital in the past.

She didn't ignorantly make this KS. She runs an LLC that is about raising capital. She isn't some stupid soccer mom who had no idea what she was doing. Kotaku insults the intelligence of its readers.

Kickstarter is more worried about making money than sticking to their code.

That's why they broke their rules for PennyArcade to change their monetization system. Kickstarter doesn't care about their own rules.

Kotaku said:
Susan no longer wants to use it to pay for tuition for the RPG camp. She'll do that herself. Now she's looking for ideas on how to turn the raised funds into something positive, without violating Kickstarter's terms of service -- no charity, no "fund-my-life".

What a joke. So she´s doing a Kickstarter that basically has no goal right now ...

Fucking Kotaku. Mike Fahey is a god damn tool. And the commenters are terrible

"I bet if this was a 9 year old boy, no one would be complaining."

My ass.

Yeah. I don't want to channel Fox News or anything, but the article could have been a bit more balanced. The nice thing about HuffPo's article is that the author isn't really coming out in support of or against Wilson - he or she is trying to "objectively" report the facts.

It is certainly shitty that people are sending in death threats, although honestly I wouldn't have expected any less because, well, the internet. Those people have pretty much brought the whole ordeal a full 360 - first it was a heartwarming story, then it was a potential scam - now it's heartwarming because a 9 year old is getting death threats.

My basic summation of this one is that the Internet fucking lost. It pains me to admit it.

It's only $20k. She didn't know what she was doing. It's just the mean Internet ganging up on "9-year old girl." (By the way, can't make a fucking Kickstarter).

Insert humanizing anecdote, while comparing an executive that oversaw an 8 figure dot com sale to a Girl Scout mother learning how to handle cookie orders.

Hack-fucking-writing.

What I really want to know is who were the people who actually threw money at this? Especially after the initial 800 was done.

Some of the things that get payed for on kick starter just baffle me.

Easiest solution would be for her to cancel the KS and implore backers to donate what they would've backed to women's charities on her daughter's behalf.

The whole damsel in distress act she puts up also works perfectly.

Kotaku: "Well, maybe she has been spamming a little on Twitter [she was just being a little too enthusiastic] , but honestly she didn´t know she couldn´t do that."

:) Sure.

Its honestly kinda sexist that he thinks she is so ignorant about this she has set-up five other campaigns before.

Someone that makes a living chasing debtors doesn't read the fine print?

Someone that makes a living chasing debtors ignores the fine print, because she knows she won't be called on it?

Which option is more in line with reality?

They were one in the same. The game she made at camp is what was technically getting kickstarted. I guess you could say that.

So then, could i create a Kickstarter asking for a round the world holiday and offer a photograph album of my time to those who donate more than $5?

Kickstarter's rules come across as really confusing amidst all of this ;]

Fahey playing the contrarian, and getting played like a fiddle. i remember liking some of his articles years back, but only when McWhertor wasn't around. sad that HuffPo got it right and Kotaku again misses its chance.

If I donate at the 10k level will you let me come with!

TBF this is really a case of a fool and his money, ultimately she didn't threaten people to donate her, it was some dumb asses who did it out of her own free own free will. Now you could say she's probably violating some rules but this was the inevitable end result of kickstarter, do you think if someone managed to raise large amounts of money from it through this that the creators of kickstarter would be inclined to take it down. As long as it's legal and remains even slightly iffy in regards to someones issues they're going to keep that shit up.

Kickstarter isn't really investing, with investments the investors usually will get something out from the successful product you'll get divends/percentage of the profit or some other ideally equalivalent monitary reward, kickstarters don't get shit from the successful product, it's was alwys extremely close to charity, we're just seeing the inevitable blurring of the lines.

About the Kotaku article...

"That’s how it unfolded. The 'Support Girls in Tech' message was between her brothers and her. It was never intended to be this gender thing"

But then he writes:

A quick glance at Susan's Twitter page shows that she did indeed tweet the living hell out of her daughter's campaign to celebrities, women's rights groups and just about anyone else she could get her Twitter hands on.

Wouldn't that imply that she did go for that "gender thing"?

Edit: Wow, I just saw the Incipio case image. o_0

Make that $20, probably cost more than $5 to print an album, o and add in shipping cost too. Unless your going with a digital album =P

Do I care whether the people who are donating the $20,000 are getting ripped off? Only a little.
Do I care that kickstarter is apparently going to profit from a scam? Very fucking much.

This is really much bigger than this particular scam now. This is a referendum on kickstarter now. This is Kickstarter being outed as a haven for scammers. That their management is incapable or unwilling to enforce their own rules.

Her stance is that it only became a gender thing once she reached the initial goal, because she was approached by people like Brenda Brathwaite Romero who hinted her to make something bigger out of it.

She´s has been trying all kinds of different things to make money in the past, so I find it hard to believe that she didn´t want to get the most out of it from the getgo.

I wouldn't really call that phone case thing a "scam". She's reselling stuff, and I don't believe Indiegogo has anything in place against that. Kickstarter does ...

A bit of a silly idea to sell those cases online, as a simple Google search would find cheaper alternatives.

It really is the closest thing to playing with a Ouija board in a horror movie.

Google search... HAH like people really use the internet.

I am shocked that Indiegogo does not have anything against reselling.

She claims to be producing them on the indiegogo: http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/phone-case-holds-essentials-in-1-place?c=home

If this isn't a "scam" then nothing is.

Order your case now or reserve a case from our next production run.

$40 gets you an all black case from our 1st limited production run NOW."

All I can say is, her game had better be damn good otherwise I'll be demanding my money back.

One more question....sorry if already discussed:

She's referred to as a millionaire in the thread title, and she herself admits that she's had success in business.

However, in her latest KS update she vehemently denies any wealth, referring to herself as "unemployed at this very moment" and stating that her success doesn't equal wealth.

Is there anything to the contrary of this? I'd have to say that much of my initial distaste towards the project (and a lot of others too, i'm sure) was based around her supposed fortune or successful career.

Edit: Although she admits that she could've paid for the camp herself on the Kotaku article, so the whole thing continues to remain fishy alongside everything else.
