Okay, way more information (and some scans) have started popping up. This is... really... odd. Definitely a new direction for EO. The graphics and presentation looks the same, pretty much like EO4, except it no longer looks like a "create your own party from the start and just explore" dungeon crawler. Instead there's a main character who you can name (he is voiced in story scenes), and there's a full story where you meet other characters, and they join your party like a story RPG. All the characters appear to be voiced.

The storyline is based on EO1, but there are a ton of changes. The story starts with the main character running into a mysterious girl. The main character is a young man from the Highlands, doing some job for the guild office in Etria, and the girl he runs into is Frederica Irving, who appears to have lost her memory. Her character design has her holding a gun too.

So yeah, an EO1 remake with named characters, voice acting, and more focus on plot. Did anyone really ask for this? It's... somewhat interesting though I must say. It also means you no longer create classes for your party too, since all the party members are actual characters who have their own fixed classes. Hmm...
Exciting stuff. :|

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS'

and another godlike Koshiro OST (aka i'm wondering if he's gonna do a remaster with dat budget and include both cause FM is pro as fuck)

my fucking body is ready

"It's EO without all the good parts for people who don't get EO so we can make EO5 like it should be."

Cash money says Koshiro's got his boy there to arrange the EO1 music. He seems away from soundchips in general.

Now the "wut" starts.

First off, a male main character? But the blonde female Protector is the game's banner character! How can she not be the MC?

Really would want to see a lot more media on this. I'm intrigued, but it seems like such a departure.

Yeah, really. That lady's carried the team thru many a terrifying boss fight and hellish maze on her shield.

Not actually that important
This new Etrian is a big change from EO4, starting by having premade characters and a more concrete plot (though the gameplay looks the same, still I want to see a screenshoot of that bottom screen). So it depends on what type of game you want to play, the new kind of etrian, or the one that the fans know and love.

I think EO1 is pretty damn hard to top in terms of personal experience. But most of it is due to the fact that before EO1 there was no EO. There were no hardcore dungeon crawlers on a portable system with actual touchscreen mapping. It was pretty magical. The story was also really interesting because it was totally in the background most of the time, but when things did develop, they were nice surprises and twists which made everything more interesting.

But don't take that as a recommendation to go get EO1 over any other EO game. I don't think that experience can be replicated today, and the newer EOs have much better interface, graphics, controls, etc. :p

Uhmmm... I think I'll go with EO1 on NDS for now then, and if I end up liking it I'll get EO4 on 3DS (I'll def skip EO2 and 3 unless something crazy happens between me and this franchise).
Thanks a bunch guys, very informative posts

I'm not a fan of remakes in general but this looks like it could be very interesting. Just hoping they fix the really broken stuff and polish up the mechanics.

From what I can see in the scans, I doubt that's true.

One of the scans clearly shows the guild with "change occupation" and "rest" options. From the description and the screen next to it though, it seems to imply you can mix and match skills from different classes, maybe.

Either way, I asked for this. Not verbally, but I definitely wondered what an EO would be like with a few static characters and a more involving story.

Yes I already mentioned that there's a class change and rest feature. But that doesn't change the fact that all the characters have their own class to start with, and they're probably not lvl1. It's certainly going to be very different from how a normal EO party is created. I also wonder if the class change is really a class change, or if it is actually some sort of sub-classing instead. That could mean the base class is still fixed.

If they do change their classes, I wonder if they have different portraits for the other classes. Probably not.

Anyway, subclassing seems more likely. Partly because it's a new mechanic not in EO1, and partly so that they don't have a medic running around as a Dark Hunter. And it's easier to implement and balance around.

voice acting.

Taking a long arse time to leave Japan confirmed !

EO1 was easier in ways and harder in ways. The grind was more outragous; level 70, retire and re-level to get higher stats, etc. But then ANY skill could get boosted, making some really broken.
Though no EO game has ever been as broken as 3. Ninja + Gladiator...

The option says that appearance and stats remain the same, so no to the portraits I'd assume.

Oops, I browsed through the thread and didn't see it mentioned.

Personally I don't think a default class would be much of a problem, as it wouldn't affect the skills or stats in any meaningful way as long as you can switch classes. In terms of levels too, retiring a character in previous games to change their class came with the penalty of reducing the character level, but this game seems to have no such penalty (meaning we're free to switch classes whenever we like) so not having to waste time getting character back up to fighting form would be great from my perspective.

The whole thing could be a sub-class thing, of course, but I don't think that'd work if we do have the ability to switch classes at will. Imagine if you could mix and match skills from any class though =o

I don't think it's a "problem" so much as a form of streamlining the game for new audiences. Ultimately, if there are 5 characters in the party and you can change the classes to create the sort of setup you want, that's not really very different from the normal game in terms of the party construction.

But where I feel the big difference lies is that now there is a pre-set party made for the player at the start, and it seems like a pretty balanced one (a warrior type class and a paladin on the front line, medic, alchemist, and gunner at the back line). This basically introduces players who don't like to create their own parties into the game and party dynamics. Furthermore, if levels are retained as characters change classes, this will no doubt make some of the game much easier, and also encourage much more experimentation with class skills for players who are more passive and less experimental with previous games.

It'll certainly be interesting to see how the game design holds up, but I think we can be sure that this will in many ways be a more "mainstream" EO title, and something they're hoping will appeal to people who for one reason or other wasn't inclined to try out the series before this.
