I know it's for the views, but it strikes me as amusing these tech demos get put on YouTube when it's not capable of lossless viewing. Same with Digital Foundry.

Sure things look scaled back from the PC version, but it still looks much better than anything we've seen this generation.

I'm really not worried about it since there will be plenty of beautiful UE4 titles next gen.

UE4 is a multi-platform engine that is built on, and mainly for, PCs. It's kind of unfair to compare it (especially given the price point I listed above). I'm eager to see the first party stuff more than anything. That's were every console TRULY shines.

Just wait until we see what SSM or ND crank out.

See the screenshots posted on the last page. It's not the same league.

Yeah, I've seen the screen comparison before. But why would I need to look at screens when I can watch both in motion? Elemental demo on PS4 looks pretty damn close to the PC version.

Why the hell are they showing this then. There's gonna be a massive upgrade in IQ at least.

It's important for them to show developers it is already running on the platform even if it isn't finished.

If you mean "Why do this publicly?", that's probably more aiming at smaller devs who can't reach Epic directly at an event like GDC.

Yeah, this is just confirmation :(

For those of you saying it doesn't look a lot worse, here's a comparison Captain Smoker made between the PC demo and the demo that was shown during Sony's event.

Is the texture still streaming in or did they really not bother with the archway?

Luckily a lof of publishers have moved to their own inhouse engines over the last couple years, so we should see a good amount of that going forward.
I'm hoping that given the easy architechture of PS4, developers won't have to rely that much on middleware, so their engines will be tailored to their needs. Unreal is probably the worst engine of the middleware realm.

Shoe horn a high end PC tech demo into a beta PS4 with specs noticably lower and these are the results.

No doubt the PS4 when it gets it's final kits will be able to do BETTER than the demo they showed, but people should be tempered by this and realize the PS4 isn't likely to match a top end PC even at this stage.

That's what I want to know as well.

It's also what makes me think that this demo may have been quickly scrapped together for the PS4.

It is pretty obviously from these pictures. Because both don't look like same assets at all.

I bet that PS4 demo one have been re-asset for additional scene after he hit the ground, larger mapping require reduce other asset.

Trolling? We all these tech demos aren't running on final hardware. We'll see by the years end how games really look.

Yup. Though there is some truth to the second post you quoted. 100% gains are a bit high I think, maybe 70-80% is more realistic based on what I've read from other places.

Lord Error

Insane For Sony
Looks fine, especially the snow/ice part, or when the lava lighting comes on to the stone guy. I hope games will be able to pull off that look, from those moments when this demo looks its best.

However, they've done a much better job with that new infiltrator demo. It's far more impressive compared to original elemental too. Thinking that PS4 should be able to pull that off even if in 720p or dynamic 1080 or something, is pretty damn great.

Ok this looks good. The scale with all these effects and particles is awesome. Lighting and textures took a small yet noticeable hit but over time it will be more optimized. Look at uncharted to uncharted 2. Look at gears 1 to gears 3. Look at halo 3 and halo 4. 4 or 5 years from now we will see huge detailed environments with detail more than even these demos. Look at early ps3 or Xbox 360 demos in comparison to the games we had later in the cycle. I think people are harder to impress lately.

I think we're just hitting critical mass on silly statements before the next gen consoles come out. Since we can't actually PLAY any of these, we have to sit here and tear them apart. Which isn't necessarily bad, mind you. Analysis is good. But the complete assumption that "OMG PS4 is so much worse than 680 lulz" is ridiculous.

Man, look at all those 8 GB of GDDR5 at work. I seriously doubt the PS4 has a 7850 in there. It's probably closer to 7770 or a 7570.

Lets just wait and see wait naughty dog has up their sleeves before we pass judgment on the ps4 hardware. We know its not a 680 but optimized properly it should do amazing things.

wow Fox Engine just spanked the shit out of Epic's next-gen engine.

How did the Fox Engine "spank the shit" out of Epic's next-gen engine? Are there any videos showing the engine running on next gen hardware? I thought the stuff that's been shown for the Fox Engine so far has been on the PS3/360 and maybe on a PC. While that stuff looks pretty good I don't think it spanks the shit out of what Epic has shown.

Once again, people get so fixated on numbers (dat 8GB of GDDR5) that it often takes comparisons like these to provide some perspective. Yeah it still looks great but people thinking that PS4 will compete with PCs are crazy. The crazier thing is that the PC comparison here is a video card that is >1 year old.

Oh, now I see the excuse is that this is built from devkits that had the original 2GB of RAM. Keep spinning and moving those goalposts. Reality tends to cause this response.

It's not spin, it's the truth. FFS already

Yeah, Epic got dev kits last year with 8GB GDDR5 to get the Elemental demo on PS4, when those kits didn't hit til mid-to-late January of this year.

Ugh, why did they change the endings of the two versions?

I noticed frame rate drops in the PS4 version during a specific part when he steps outside and now it's impossible to compare with the PC thanks to them changing the ending.

Epic has to be tolling at this point, I mean just look at this shit:

Looks like something straight from a PS2 game.

Things i noticed:

- choppy framerate at times
- massive textures downgrade
- particle effects in places 2D (door)
- lack of GI (which was already confirmed)

Framerate is lack of power but particles and textures downgrade is weird. Some textures don't load at all or they are this gen consoles quality.

IQ will probably get better. High quality textures should be essentially free on GPU like 7850-7870.

Yeah stuff like this makes it look unoptimised and rushed.

I mean of course the PC will be better but that archway shows that it is just not carefully ''tuned down'' to run on a PS4. It is pretty much rammed to fit without any though to get the same demo running.

Unless that is some weird texture loading issue that is :/

I'm not a great fan of UEngine, but keeps in mind they have optimized this engine in how many months? Epic hasn't been unable to optimize for pc in time for the past E3... it seems a bit stupid to judge now how will fit in the ps4 hardware...

Easy there. Next gen consoles are released this fall not this month. They also recently scrapped GI which means they need to balance things differently.

It's just an unoptimized demo running on who knows what preliminary devkits.
The big difference so far are the toned down particles effects, when they get something running at least on final hardware, the discussion will have more sense.
Also the engine will continue to be optimized for years, there's a difference between the UE3 used in Stranglehold and the UE3 in Bioshock Infinite :D

My feeling anyway is that Epic will be disappointed this time, UE3 had a lot of success because many developers were unprepared to create their own PS3/360 level engines. This time we're seeing that a lot of companies are well prepared, they're developing their own tools and engines and they even look better than UE4...so there's no reason to buy a license from Epic.

This was using the earlier dev kits with 2.2gb of gddr5 right?

Don't worry so much about the devkits. The UE4 demo is a technical show case of things most people on GAF wouldn't be able to appreciate. The PS4 should be able to pull it off if optimized properly, but unfortunately, when you are trying to aim at a moving target, you aren't exactly doing yourself favours. It's not Epic or Sony's fault, the hardware isn't final, and it is suffering from the same glut as we all feel at the beginning of a gen: unoptimized software.

I said it before and I will say it again: This whole section got things just about completely turned off and the other demos shown had better textures than this. It looks they are not even running/streamed. Same with the shitty shadows.
You guys really think that the PS4 won't run a few more textures to be comparable to the PC shot? lol geez, even GoW got textures better than this. People need to quit riding the hyperbole train.

I will ignore the fact that this is UE4 and most likely won't showcase the best graphics on a console compared to proprietary engines, and that this seems to showcase effects rather than how pretty they can make something look.

Whilst some things look slightly downgraded from PC demo (textures are different especially on the pillars and DOF is better on PC version), other parts like they changed some things aesthetically.

E.g. why can we see the mountains on PS4 version here but wasn't in the PC demo?
