Media Create Sales: Week 12, 2013 (Mar 18 - Mar 24)

Only because it was a handheld iteration. The quality of the game had nothing to do with it, which is why it bombed in North America and Europe.

Yeah, you are right. The numbers for that game sold are 0 LTD

Because its not out yet

Wario & Game is set to be a bomb. Will it have legs though?

Prediction League April, 2013

Predict how much these titles will sell in the month (from Apr 01 to Apr 28):

[PSV] Hardware (28 days) - 77,777
[3DS] Cardfight!! Vanguard Ride to Victory (18 days) - 55,555
[3DS] Tomodachi Collection Shin Seikatsu (11 days) - 444,444
[PS3+360] Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 (11 days) - 88,888
[PSP] 7th Dragon 2020 II (11 days) - 111,111
[PS3] Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen (4 days) - 111,111

Another PS3/Vita release: Ragnarok Odyssey Ace(?).

Vita can't even hold its own successful games.

Edit: More useless retailer comments, this time from Tsutaya:

- not much stock left from LM2 last week;
- New Leaf increased in sales (thanks to the spring break?);
- Vita Muramasa sold-out.

Well yeah - ha ha. But now you're just being silly for the purpose of being a word perfectionist. Of course nothing can only ever be sold exactly at cost all the time. You'd have to have official retail price drops of $2 every other week - now how ridiculous would that be?
No you wouldn't. You would lower the price in the same intervals as you suggested but never go below what it actually costs. Lower the price in advance and hope the average will be at cost doesn't work that great either when nobody buys your console and you have to halt production and pay for keeping inventory. You will end up selling not at cost at all, which I'm sure was the case for the GC most of its life.

Which is also the reason why Nintendo was so very cautious with pricing with the Wii. Which worked much too well for them and formed a habit that is biting them in the ass now. The head start advantage is not paying off yet in great numbers.

So SS isn't the only Zelda to ever need a peripheral, but it is the only one within well over a decade, and if anything my main point still stands- neither MM or SS are a good guide to the health of the series as a whole at their respective release at the end of a console lifespan and requiring a pack-in, I still maintain the DS games are a better barometer than SS.

WW also declined over OoT and TP over WW, in Japan. On handhelds, Zelda is boosting/compensating for the declines on consoles. Both are commonly agreed on in these threads too.

A drop right now without any meaningful software to accompany it wouldn't accomplish much of anything. They have to know that there is software accompanying the drop, or coming very soon afterwards.

Yeah. Basically like schuelma said, I'm thinking Pikmin 3 and Wii Fit U are done (maybe still integrating social stuff into Wii Fit U, but they'll surely allow patches there as more SNSs come up, anyways, so they could put it out anytime and patch later), so those would be easy releases with a price drop. Then it's just a matter of making sure there's stuff to follow.

drop the Nintendo Land pack-in.

I'd like them to go the Zombi U route and make NL a downloadable pack-in.

1) Get's the users to get the system online.
2) No manufacturing costs.
3) Still gets Trojan Horse Nintendo franchises in the mind of buyers.
4) Since it doesn't seem to be a "play for hours and hours" type of traditional game, it would seem to make more sense as a download game.

And even with the 3DS price drop, they still had the 3DS hardware profitable again within a year.

I think that was an allusion to the 3DSXL being profitable or maybe 3DSXL profit overcoming any remaining loss on the OG model. At the very least, all their timeframes pointed to the 3DSXL launch time being when the 3DS would become profitable, so that had to figure in there somehow.

Ouch...seems like the easy porting between the two will be helpful in the west with indies, but there seems to be very littlle interest in Vita exclusives in Japan. Wonder what will happen when Sony drops the Ps3 price

I know it's early days with only One Piece being out but it seems the ps3/vita combo is actually helping vita in the short term. It could hurt it in the long term as it won't have exclusive content but right now it seems to be doing good. The thing needs a library of games and multiplats will do. It's better than a psv/3ds multiplat solution.

True, and its better to be in the vita situation rather than the bleak wiiu 3rd party situation.

At the same time there's no guarantee that publishers would make these multiplat games Vita exclusive if a PS3 version wasn't easy to make as well.

Wii U is early enough in its lifespan that it's not completely impossible that the third-party situation is significantly better than what's been (or rather, what hasn't been) announced thus far, but that chance is very slim and gets slimmer every week that goes by without announcements.

True, but at the current moment an increase to vita level support would be a godsend to wiiu

Yes, and Sony probably has some very nice incentives for having a dual release.

Yeah I think the problem will be the long term, especially next year if Vita won't be able to get a big enough userbase in Japan. I doubt we'd see many PS4/Vita titles, Vita/3DS titles would make no sense, and Vita/Wii U would be completely insane. So by the end of 2014 Vita needs to stand on its own. And it needs SS2 for Holidays 2014 for that matter. If by 2014 Sony can announce one big japanese franchise having an exclusive title to Vita (FF, MGS, RE) then I think they managed to turn Vita around. It will by no means ever dominate Japanese charts but it will have a big enough momentum to last it its whole projected lifespan.

I could be wrong but I think Sony intended to have PS4/Vita games (though that seems a bit redundant with streaming PS4 games to Vita though, unless you don't own a PS4).

Most games outside of certain Japanese ones will be PS4/720 though.

The basic model of the Wii U is not significantly more expensive than the Wii was at launch in Japan. It's only 1,250 yen. Of course, the black one may be more desirable to the hardcore, or maybe in general, but if people were desperate for the console, it wouldn't be a huge barrier to miss out on some plastic stands in the white one.

- New Leaf increased in sales (thanks to the spring break?);

As in "the break in the Spring." Think Japan uses a trimester setup, so they would have a Spring and Fall Break between trimesters.
(No pregnancy jokes.)
High School graduations were a few weeks ago, and those usually happen a few weeks before the end of the school year in the U.S.

Right. Last week and this week (real world, not sales weeks) are Spring break for all school kids & university students. Next Monday (the 8th) is when most schools go back.

EDIT: Also, there's a Tomodachi Collection Nintendo Direct tonight at 8PM Japan time. They may be hoping for a viral thing, like after what happened with the Animal Crossing Direct.

Don't know so much about these releases, either. :lol

I almost excluded that one. =| But said whatever it was already on the preliminary list. Tomodachi Collection is the big question mark.

Since I'm here, I just found out the new Famitsu Top 30 page www.famitsu.com/biz/ranking As a new useful function, it has better sell-through indicators, now in each 20% range. You can also play "find out the PS2 and Xbox 360 sales in the graph"

But that would be a net profit approach. It was clear that I was referring to a net neutral approach. If you want to play silly semantic games, then count me out.

I think that was an allusion to the 3DSXL being profitable or maybe 3DSXL profit overcoming any remaining loss on the OG model. At the very least, all their timeframes pointed to the 3DSXL launch time being when the 3DS would become profitable, so that had to figure in there somehow.

Yeah - no doubt. And if Nintendo has some redesign planned for WiiU which will bring back profitability in short order following the price drop, then that could definitely allow for more aggressive pricing with the current model. I'm not sure if anything resembling the XL is actually feasible with the WiiU though.

The other thing to keep in mind with WiiU is that Nintendo kind of fucked themselves with the GamePad. A big part of pricing flexibility comes with accessory sales. Those are pure profit that can help offset a loss on the hardware itself - but Nintendo doesn't have much room to work with here. If they finally get to a point where they can sell additional UPads, that could help, but for now they have to rely on selling more Wiimotes, which is a far smaller pool of accessory sales than would normally exist for a new system.

As for my own guess (which I have zero confidence in, and would not bet any money on - ha ha), I would imagine some sort of juggling with the SKUS (probably getting to a single SKU) to maximize Nintendo's ability to drop the price. Maybe a price drop to $279 (maybe with Pikmin?) for the new standard SKU, and a clearance drop to $249 to clear out the remaining Basic model stock. And then (if they can keep costs dropping between then and the end of the year) a drop to $249 for the end of year holiday season for the new standard SKU. That would be about the most aggressive I could see them going without completely fucking over their bottom line.

So long as the Vita can maintain a presence in the market a year or more into the PS4's life, it should be able to find its niche the same way the PSP did. Right now it just doesn't make sense to make exclusives with the PS3 having the largewr userbase, once the system's been dead for a year things should open up.

Calling what the PSP had a niche is a stretch.

I'm kinda surprised at the Wii U's sale in the same way I was surprised at PSP sales, what the hell are people buying it for? No Wii U software is higher than 5k, yet there's 10k Wii U sold.

Oh and next Tales mothership is either 3DS or Vita/PS3. Sure the mothership titles didn't do too well on the DS, but the 3DS is not the DS. Although, I don't think the Vita's poor performance is gonna make BN back out of a Vita/PS3 strategy.

Calling what the PSP had a niche is a stretch.
Yeah, MH is no niche.

Wait for TGS... 2014?

Third-party support will not dramatically improve out of nowhere a year and a half, let alone three years, into a struggling (or outright failing) platform's lifespan. It just doesn't happen.

Calling what the PSP had a niche is a stretch.

Seriously... I mean isn't it only like a million units under the PS2's total? If it wasn't for DS having it's insane userbase total PSP would be damn impressive.

Hell it still is otherwise. 2nd place for handhelds that generation meant a little behind the prior generations home console market leader. The handheld market saw gigantic growth that generation in Japan. Over 50 million dedicated handheld consoles sold.

Since I'm here, I just found out the new Famitsu Top 30 page www.famitsu.com/biz/ranking

Oh, man, they're changing it again? Got to figure out a new way to script saving the page, then (unless it's always going to be at that address like m-create.com/ranking is).

I'm not sure if anything resembling the XL is actually feasible with the WiiU though.

But that's exactly feasible. Larger screened controller. Good reason to buy a second controller, too. System doesn't seem to have much flexibility for a redesign, but the controller's a whole other story. :)

(From my Famitsu database)

PS2 - 182m pieces of software sold
PSP - 73.3m pieces of software sold

The impressiveness sort of tarnishes there.

Hey - stranger things have happened. A couple possible advantages to such a scenario would be that the new design (if sufficiently different) could help allow for a more effective "relaunch" of the system, as well as giving them an opportunity to build a new controller with new parts - which could potentially help them bring the price down on one of the most expensive components of the system.

I like the new Famitsu top 30 chart, the last one used a small font, it was often hard to read...

Software was never likely to be close.

I was meaning in a purely hardware sense. Not many pieces of hardware are privy to the perfect storm of software the PS2 had.
