Microsoft Studios' creative director has some choice words about always-online

Man, fuck getting a second job to buy a PS3.

You will have to fucking move to get a 720.

No kidding. This happens to me on a regular basis before kicking back up to the 5Mb/s I'm paying for hours later:

But hey, screw me for living in Oklahoma.

I don't think people need to worry about Live going down, just their local Internet connection. These days, connections like that are required to be up 99.999% of the time (5 minutes of downtime a year), or 99.9999% of the time (30 seconds a year)

Any business will require that level of availability for important services. Now, your local provider doesn't have those guarantees.

PSN was down for 23 days after they got hacked. That would be 23 days of having a $300 (at least) MS branded brick sitting by your television if something of that scope happened here.

As much fun as it is to see people reacting negatively to the worst player in the console game, I am sad to say that I think once they start revealing stuff people will change their tune. Halo 5 and Gears 4, just one good new IP, many if not all of the same features the PS4 offers, Twitch-exclusivity, whatever DVR/Cable Box function they're going to offer, a subsidized SKU and who knows what other features they come up with will win a ton of people over.

Not saying they'll "win," but I don't think always-online or no-used games is enough to kill them. People already not only put up with GOLD, but defend it. People are... kinda dumb...

Well they already lost this gen against a weakened Sony. Gears is dead and Halo has lost a lot of ground to third parties, especially with 4.

Industry people are really getting better and better at being douchebags. Which this would apply to the quality of games too...

Really? What are they?

Any third party game?
sorry

Anyway I'm a bit shocked that this is actually happening. I'd always assumed that there was some caveat or misinformation about the always online thing but with this little meltdown I'm starting to believe.
Would tend to lean towards PS4 anyway but this kind of stuff makes me want to avoid Durango down the line. Although no doubt I'll cave eventually when/if they announce Alan Wake 2 as an exclusive.

Edit: I think people are taking the city joke a bit seriously though. That was clearly a silly, admittedly misjudged, remark to a friend.

So at this point can we now stop doubting that MS will have always online DRM? I mean at this point everything including these tweets are pointing to this. The attitude in those tweets show exactly how out of touch and arrogant people at MS are too.

Whether or not he was joking about the small town thing is irrelevant.

His poor taste in jokes has nothing to do with his biased opinion about always online.

Wii U can probably turn itself around eventually. Maybe MS can as well. Is this something that can be removed with an update?

IIRC the kotaku rumor said it can be changed through updates. Still it's a shitty decision if true and wouldn't surprise me if the system bombs, hopefully serving MS execs some humble pie so they can pull their heads out of their ass.

I think he was definitely joking about the City ones. The rest obviously looked real.

There is making a point of always online, albeit he was using stupid analogies. And then criticising people for living at certain cities.

Apparently the anti small town joke is being taken out of context.

Yeah but it's really beside the point here. Take the city/country joking out of the equation and we still have the offensive analogies and #dealwithit people are incensed by.

If you don't work at microsoft you literary have no idea what you are talking about.

=3

I don't give a damn if the guy is joking or trolling or not...it's a PR disaster, and he should lose his job.

I refuse to buy any games this douchebag is affiliated with, and if the next Xbox is truly always online, count me out.

I've been a loyal XBL subscriber since 2003, I'll just let that shit run its course.

Fuck that guy.

Well, the thing about always-online is that it is never a problem until it is a problem.

Who?

Remember the used games comments + its series of events?

http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2013/02/playstation-4-used-games/

PS4 will be able to play used games, for a fee. Will likely work like the online passes, but with any games and will probably work even if your console is always offline. Rumor has it Durango won't even offer that option and you either buy it new or don't buy it at all.

Regarding the always online, other folks have already mentioned Sony affirming that the console will work offline, and so has Blizzard confirming Diablo III will work offline on PS4.

nowhere is it confirmed that DRM is in place,,, there are other reasons to be always on that are not DRM

Cloud processing and more interactive connected games NOT necessarily no offline play....

Microsoft had a pretty big outage hit their cloud services infrastructure just a few weeks ago. There was a long period during this outage where XBL cloud saves were also unavailable.

  • Xbox Live won't be successful you need to have broadband.
  • DLC should be on disc, selling content later is a ripoff.
  • Kinect won't sell you need to have a giant living room.
  • Xbox 720 won't be successful you need to have Internet.

Same shit. Different year.

Okay, here is the thing GAF....all of you are going to buy xbox when the next Halo comes out. They have probably done their calculations and they are fine with loosing some folks due to always online. They definitely make a lot of money with Xbox live and they want only those people who are going to pay for live and buy stuff online. That is their business model and I am willing to bet it's going to be more successful then Sony's model.

But as a consumer I really like PS4's model, at least what they have shown of it and also I am Playstation guy! But I would wager that come Christmas time, new Xbox out sells PS4 2 to 1, even with all the online crap! (in North America)
No Im not. Always online is a definite not buy. I didnt buy Sim Shitty, I didnt buy Diablo 3, Im definitely not buying a $400 device that wont play games unless its connected to the internet.

It may as well be a $400 paper weight. I hope, oh god I hope no one supports this shit.

Nice, trolling your potential customers. Great way to make me want to purchase the Nextbox!

And funnily enough, while I was writing this post my connection was cut for 2 minutes, and it's something that happens daily (I blame my shitty ISP). So thanks but no thanks, this will definitely make my future console purchasing decision way easier.

LOL! How would they ever have gotten by before you "warned" them of mean, old man Microsoft's scary next generation videogames console and their apparent lack of concern for gamers with bad internet connections hahaha.

I'm under no delusion that my warning will affect MS' bottom profit. But I'd like people that I know to at least be aware of this and spread it to other people so this bad news will snowball until people are at least aware of it. And then it's up to the market to decide.

And I'm sure your lack of concern will also be a music to some people who live in countries without decent internet connection. :)
