Microsoft Studios' creative director has some choice words about always-online

Mentally prepare yourself for a brutal, next gen NPD.
Maybe, but why would I need to prepare myself? I think it's a shitty decision to implement this, I wouldn't mind consumers making a stand w their purchases. I just don't think it's gonna happen.
Are you seriously trying to imply that internet is irrelevant? This has been the top story in one of the biggest sites and the biggest gaming forum on the internet for a day, how the fuck can a company ignore that volume of bad publicity?
The Internet isn't irrelevant but this story is still confined to enthusiast sites.

The gamble of suckering customers into purchasing an always online, anti consumer console is unprecedented.

We are consumers. We are the early adopters. If we don't pick it up who will? I mean most of us aren't picking up Wii U because we don't like how Nintendo is handling things and it's not selling. We haven't he power to make or break a console in the early days.

Enthusiast sites like Reddit's main page?
I'm not saying its not a big story. Just don't think it's enough to make MS switch their plans. If MS is planning on doing this, the whole console/all their deals are prob structured around this- it wouldn't be an easy switch.

Checking out Reddit's gaming side and the topic there has well over 7,000+ comments of pissed off gamers.

That's surprising.

At least he will have something to show to his kids/grandchildren one day. '' That was me getting good blasted by the whole Internet community. ''

Because they're clearly betting on the mainstream/casual gamer and not the "core" gamer demographic (hence Kinect required).

Their assumption is clearly that they can live just fine with only the mainstream/casual gamer and will no longer concern themselves with catering to the traditional "core" gamer.

The market focus for MS and Sony is diverging as clearly as Nintendo's did from the two of them with the Wii.

I think we should all just wait until this device is actually confirmed from Microsoft and know what features it will have. I know that sounds too logical for the internet in 2013 but I think its best to remain level headed until we get legit facts. It does seem that some people just have it out for Microsoft these days though and will run with any rumor that gets posted.

As much as I am against always online. I haven't been without internet in like 13 years. With only one or two outages a year max, lasting for maybe 1 to 5 hours.

There have been a few one week periods without internet while moving into a new place where I did play some games offline, so I guess that would be annoying. But I still have my PS2/PS3 etc...

mandatory online is like forcing a variable into an equation that works perfectly well without one...

This is what it boils down to. For me personally, since I play offline single-player almost exclusively, I don't like the idea of being at the mercy of something that isn't necessary.

We'll see soon, hopefully, but right now there's an awful lot of smoke for there to be no fire.

The problem is that the 'core' is what buys launch consoles. Your "Kinect" crowd doesn't buy Day 1 consoles and they wait for a price drop and for games to be cheaper.

Unless it's going to be $249.99. Then go for it MS.

I've been spending all morning getting up to speed. It's been wonderfully entertaining.

I skimmed through it. Holy shit, the way this thread escalated is abysmally amazing. It started as GAF saying "LOL" to everyone going nuts over it. Even if Adam was kidding about some of his analogies, I'm sure a lot of people over at Xbox division just woke up to this being blown out of the proportion. It's glorious; the idea that a few shitty analogies can make everyone lose their mind!

It's a gold mine (this thread) and we need Lionel Mandrake ASAP! :lol
