Microsoft Studios' creative director has some choice words about always-online

Are you seriously trying to imply that internet is irrelevant? This has been the top story in one of the biggest sites and the biggest gaming forum on the internet for a day, how the fuck can a company ignore that kind of volume of bad publicity?

If the gaming side of the Internet was a barometer of sales, the Wii would have tanked, and iPad sales would be in the toilet.

It's cute how all the pirates are upset about "always online", though. Oh, not a pirate, just don't have a stable Internet connection? Go buy a Wii U. Nintendo has your back.

As much as I am against always online. I haven't been without internet in like 13 years. With only one or two outages a year max, lasting for maybe 1 to 5 hours.

There have been a few one week periods without internet while moving into a new place where I did play some games offline, so I guess that would be annoying. But I still have my PS2/PS3 etc...

I'm more worried that I wouldn't be able to play these titles in the future the same way I'll still hook up my snes or dreamcast from time to time.

Maybe Gies can explain to Sweet Billy how his comments don't mean anything and therefore he doesn't need to lock down his tweeter account.

A fake account created in April 2009?

No.
Fake as in he probably doesn't actually work for Microsoft.
In fact, his LinkedIn has no mention of Microsoft.
Just saying...

Either way, this in NO WAY confirms always on for the next Xbox.

It's a dumb tweet by an attention-seeking "nobody."
That's all it is.

I hope you're not accusing anti always online activists of being pirates. It didn't work out well for the last guy to try that in this thread.

Microsoft is going to have to respond to this... Though it will certainly test the "any news is good" theory. I've heard through some sources at work about "about always, low-powered, subsidized, etc" but they never really bothered me.

They appear to bother quite a few people. Or a lot of people out there are anti-MS. I'm not a fan of theirs, so I can say this has been enjoyable. In fact the only thing they appear to be doing right these days is cloud - maybe they should ditch the rest.

Doesn't matter in the end - but enjoyable nonetheless. The next X-Box will sell like gangbusters, especially to the Wal-Mart crowd if they subsidize it.

I just wonder why we still have no reply from Microsoft about this whole disaster?

I guess some heads are rolling at the moment.
Or it could be because it's still 6:00 AM in Seattle and no one is working. And even then, I am certain we'll get the normal "Microsoft does not respond to rumors" response. Which makes complete sense, since it's a rumor based upon a rumored product.

I'm not going to make any brash statements one way or the other on this topic, since we still don't know. Everyone else can have fun playing the role of PI Jake Gittes, but I'll over/under-react when the information is conveyed straight from the horse's mouth.

Except it did unless he just removed it overnight.
He has convos with major devs, and most of the head guys at 343 follow him.
And David Jaffe defended him. And it's not fake.

Yes yes, please elaborate your argument, of course all the people against always online are all dirty pirates. Please elaborate
joking don't go that way
.

We don't have any official news from Microsoft? What the hell are they waiting?

The problem is that the 'core' is what buys launch consoles. Your "Kinect" crowd doesn't buy Day 1 consoles and they wait for a price drop and for games to be cheaper.

Unless it's going to be $249.99. Then go for it MS.

It might be even cheaper with some kind of ripoff subscription model where you pay mandatory fees for many years to come for always-online.

I think we should all just wait until this device is actually confirmed from Microsoft and know what features it will have. I know that sounds too logical for the internet in 2013 but I think its best to remain level headed until we get legit facts. It does seem that some people just have it out for Microsoft these days though and will run with any rumor that gets posted.
Get your logic and rationality out of this thread. We're on a witchhunt here!

Just thinking in relation to experience...Halo 4's Spartan Ops cannot be played without an online connection even in single player. Do not fucking want that in next gen games.

Why is this thread so big and moving so fast??

I thought it was as good as confirmed already that the next Xbox was going to be full of these kind of terrible design choices?

Yes just like how the pirates were the only ones who were upset about SimCity being unplayable for a week at launch. Not paying customers.

Well the problem is that there's no console announced and he wasn't reaaally referring to any sort of console in particular.

What's a Durango? New Xbox? Who is that guy?

I think there's room to address the rumours without directly confirming or announcing a new console.

A simple: The rumours that have been circling the internet are false. BAM! End of story, their lack of response is cause for concern.

There probably won't be an official response. If there is it will be the standard "We don't comment on rumour and speculation".

I expect this will be the standard response, but it simply won't enough. They've taken a battering today and will continue to do so until there's other big gaming news to take the spotlight away from them.

They need to deny these claims if they are false. Too long in responding or simply choosing to use the stock response runs the risk of leaving a permanent stain on their next console, even if it doesn't have the always online requirement.

Their internet is down.

Hehe.

Adam has done wonderful PR so far:/

diggingtjfzj.jpg

You do have to wonder what he was thinking. Was a move by MS to gauge feedback or did this guy simply spill the beans by mistake?

Like i said

So i would say they're discussing how to respond right now, that Adam just make Microsoft on a very bad position
If i'm ballmer i won't just fire him,i may even wanna kill him

That's an understatement. Although I am entertaining the possibility that this was intentional to gauge feedback/general response. As unlikely as it might be.

I wouldn't say so. "Pissed off gamers" is /r/gaming in a nutshell.

Doesn't make the potential of always online a reason to bastion Lord Microsoft. Not only do they not have a lick of anything shown but they may also be an always online platform.

Surely even the most staunch supporter is not that blind. Oh wait, there are some in this thread who would still buy it ><

What people forget is that a media box is always online - of course it was going to be that way. MS doesn't care about games, they care about owning your living room. Games are just one way to get there. The other is through your cable and online connection.

Because they're clearly betting on the mainstream/casual gamer and not the "core" gamer demographic (hence Kinect required).

Their assumption is clearly that they can live just fine with only the mainstream/casual gamer and will no longer concern themselves with catering to the traditional "core" gamer.

The market focus for MS and Sony is diverging as clearly as Nintendo's did from
the two of them with the Wii.
The problem with this is there is a large portion of American households that don't even have internet. Plus all of the people that live in rural areas that don't have a consistantly stable connection. If this is true those are guaranteed lost sales. I imagine there are large portions of Europe that are in the same situation.

Assuming this is all true of course.

Everyone loves when an individual stands up and personifies the fuck-the-consumer arrogance that Microsodt has supposedly had in creating their fuck-the-consumer box.

"As good as confirmed" is not confirmed. I'd say there's a big difference.

Nonetheless, this Adam Orth character is a right piece of trash. I'd rather see the collective GAF community have it out for him, rather than get huffed up about a rumor we don't know is true or don't have all the details on.

Don't I need an Internet connection just for basic functionality and the soon to be improved load times for Wii U?

This Orthy person is not very smart. When trying to get a point across, don't use tactics that deflate your argument:

  • False equivalence is not equivalency, it only works on people that are not intelligent or patient enough to see the actual comparison
  • The customer is the most important part of the business, if a product seemingly places a service restriction on a customer the producer needs to address this and/or explain the value of their decision
  • The "why" needs to be explained without condescension
  • The reasons for this should be as inclusive as possible
