Microsoft Studios' creative director has some choice words about always-online

If the gaming side of the Internet was a barometer of sales, the Wii would have tanked, and iPad sales would be in the toilet.

It's cute how all the pirates are upset about "always online", though. Oh, not a pirate, just don't have a stable Internet connection? Go buy a Wii U. Nintendo has your back.

Are you happen to be MIZ*TAKE's long-lost twin brother?

When I went to bed this was on page 32. Did something happen or did GAF collectively pile on this dude?

Recap for you:

I'm not sure where that poster who does thread recaps is -- but I'll try my best..

  • NeoGAF user Shinobi screen caps the tweets of Adam Orth, Creative Director at MSFT Studios.
  • These tweets contain the fallacious analogies you see in the OP -- in defense of an always-online console box.
  • In conjunction with the Kotaku thread about the always-online rumors, this thread blows up.
  • The story is picked up by popular gaming sites including CVG, Verge, Kotaku, and others.
  • David Jaffe attempts to defend the character of Adam (they were former coworkers) -- but particularly his comments regarding rural towns in the US and their online infrastructure.
  • Adam attempts to excuse the tweets as jokes and locks his twitter account.
  • Detective-GAF then finds an alleged dev on a separate forum claiming one should keep up with their ISP bills (implying some truth to the rumor).
  • Detective-GAF then confirms that alleged dev to be an actual developer working on next-gen games.
  • The story continues to blow up on reddit, reaching the front page with thousands of comments.
  • A user in the reddit thread claims Adam is an ass in person and he insists on being called 'sweet billy.'
  • Detective-GAF then confirms Adam is in fact, sweet billy, here on GAF. And his tweets confirm he is, in fact, an ass.
  • Aaron Greenberg claims to be unaware of the existence of Adam Orth. [Insert Sweet Billy joke]

Did you seriously just call all of us pirates? Really?

So, Edge said it, Kotaku said it, and now we've got a Microsoft Studios guy wheeling out the defense early. Smells like we can pencil it in as an reason for the "why the Xbox 3 failed" threads we'll be having in 18 months time.

The Third Console Curse strikes again.

I'm trying to catch up. The only thing Gies has said on the subject is he doesn't think the next Xbox will be always online required, right?

I don't think he knows anything. His tweet above is rather ambiguous, saying that the anti- always online uproar is part of a narrative that some people want to push without proper confirmation from Microsoft, but that it could turn out to be true in the end.

so people are going to take rumour as and out out fact and dismiss things based on it?

seems crazy to me to make a decision with no facts on something you as yet know nothing about. but that's the internet.

seems quite funny too that people are using internet connected devices to post on the internet about their anger at needing to be connected to the internet.

Which is the better outcome:

- Everyone choose to "ignore" the rumors and wait for official announcement, make their choice then.

- Everyone react strongly and verbally to a strongly evident rumor to hopefully change MS's potential decision/direction.

?

That decision is conditional on MS going through with this right? If what this guy said has pissed you off just wait for a public apology from MS. It is just over 13 hours since this thread was made, let alone the 48 it usually takes for a response to be carefully crafted.
Microsoft won't say anything though. That's what pisses me off. They could easily disavow this and they'll say nothing. At the same time I liked what Sony showed earlier in the year, I'm tired of paying for Xbox Live Gold and I have always planned to be a single console household next gen so I've just said "fuck it" and prematurely made my choice. If MS blows me away and they don't go ahead with these stupid decision I might pick one up down the line. As I said straw that broke the camels back. I was already leaning that way and without BC I have no reason to stick with MS again.

So basically with always online as soon as Microsoft or whoever says you are done with your game you cannot play it anymore right?

But in exchange for losing ownership of my game I can maybe post my score on Facebook.

That sounds like a fair trade if you really support the troops..... I mean think of the children.... what I meant was, care about the Devs/Pubs.

Is this a play off of one of aegies' tweets or did I say something wrong?

Both Sony and Nintendo had make changes to fix their arrogant decisions and the consumers benefitted from it.

Its looking like the third console curse will strike again. Though if all this comes to fruition and the Durango tanks as it deserves if all these rumors are true, I fear that it might be the last Microsoft console. Balmer is a beancounter only interested in beating Apple to controlling the living room. If the Xbox division becomes an albatross I think he would not think twice about axing it completely.

He isn't backing down or downplaying the important issue, just the bit about Adam Orth trolling his residence. That was a joke, the rest was not.

And he's right, Orth might have handled the situation stupidly but this out of context "deal with it" bullshit sites are accusing him of is ridiculous. He was just joking with his friend for god's sake, I dislike anti-consumer policies and the douchebags who defend them as much as any other gamer but I feel sorry for this guy for getting all this heat, it's simply unfair.

definitely the latter if people have the sense to indeed treat it as a rumour and not make final decisions based on it.

Then deal with it?

The guy was stupid enough to put this out on a public medium like twitter, I feel no sympathy for him to be honest.

Well then let me pose this question to you...

Have you heard of him before this incident?

...exactly.

I'm done here.

If you read through the thread or did any actually research, you would know he is backed and worked for jaffe and sony at one point.

You know... when thinking about the two main issues of always-online causing serious problems and of casuals not giving a damn, why can't it be both?

This will cause serious problems as it did with Diablo III and SimCity 5. There's no denying that. However, casuals will not give a damn because they are all on smartphones and tablets, and if they do want a console, there is a perfectly valid competitor in the PS4, which will have all the 3rd-Party games because companies cannot afford to be exclusive to one console anymore. For all of Sony's problems this past generation, they had done very well in terms of sales. It's hard to deny that when every system from the seventh generation has sold better than the NES. Other gaming companies wish they could have a third console like the PS3 or handheld like the PSP.

Can't wait for this to happen. Though is someone seriously defending this shit in this thread? I haven't seen a post yet.

Very few. I have no problem with the 360 or paying for Gold. Not playing games if the Internet acts stupid is a no go for me though. I hate to say that, as I LOVE the Forza series and Kinect is excellent for my kids.

I may be PC/Vita only for a while if this crap is true. I'm hoping this idiot is trolling. I'd still fire his tail even if he is.

His first three tweets wasn't engaging his "friend" whatsoever.

Ok, what does he mean when he says "Half Life on this subject"?

He's saying when will it die down.

Which is the sort of attitude I'd expect from someone who worked on the ME3 debacle, especially given it's own long running PR disaster of "lie, evade, lie again."

WOW. MS is really getting hammered. Looking forward to se how MS can turn this around.

They don't really have to do anything, in May they will have their announcement and talk about it, and if then is confirmed some people will not buy it and some people will.

I don't think Microsoft cares too much about people that don't have live, since their profit margin on those customers is fairly low, selling the console at a loss and all.
