[RUMOR] Paul Thurrott: Xbox 720 is expensive: $500 or $300 for sub model, 5/21 Unveil

Yeah, I think the subscription model is definitely one of those things that GAF immediately sniffs out but the general public will eat up (at least, they will in the U.S. for sure).

If Sony doesn't offer something similar they may be 'priced' out through it. The numbers are more important than the details.

I wonder how XBLA is going to handled during the transition. If BC is out will indie devs make cross platform games, graduate up to the new console, or ignore the new box and continue to support the 360? It's not like those games need Kinect or jaw dropping graphics to sell.

Yes it would be "yours" after the sub was over.

People would buy the $500 model because it would be cheaper in the long run. Sub models usually mean you pay more but it small chunks. Given the $200 price difference the sub most mean at least 4 years of Live, or offer something other than just Live.

Or Live just got hell of a lot more expensive. I can't image a 4 year contract. 2 years max. I'm going to guess it will be $10 a month.

I'm guessing people will see the $300 price, see that you have to subscribe to XBL for x number of years, see it as a good deal because they would get XBL regardless

Sadly this is what I think as well

I don't like what I'm hearing from all these sources one bit...I disagree with Paul too..heck outside of PGR I don't think I heard anything that is 'good' so far.

I would have gladly payed $500 for a system that will play all next-gen games, doesn't require always-online, and has no pay wall.
OH WAIT

You're not getting a dime from me this time out Microsoft

I'm still betting the next Xbox will have BC, which is one thing they'll have over Sony, but the 499 price point is very believable.

Is there any reason Sony wouldn't match Xbox on the subscription thing using their PS+ service?

Damn, you would think that there would be at least one good rumor regarding the next Xbox. But so far, everything that is being hinted at makes me cringe.

People aren't going to be as willing to sign a 2 year contract for XBL service as they are for smartphone data plans. This is still just a toy, not a necessity.

Sony is probably unfamiliar with a device subscription-based model.

holy shit, that price at the subscription point?

If true:

Goddamn take out the fucking Kinect and EyeToy garbage out of your systems, Microsoft and Sony, the 1 1/2 genres that it isn't absolutely abominable for aren't worth the goddamn added price. It also makes me petrified of the next PS4 price.

If false:

Can Microsoft not even have a single shred of positive news/rumours leading up to the reveal of their new system? It's like the worst pre-system buzz I've ever seen.

Vita had great buzz here on GAF leading up to its reveal. Broadening to movies, Titanic had horrific pre-release buzz.

Pre-release buzz is overrated.

Didn´t eat the 360 one up.

Wasn't that kind of a Best Buy exclusive and not well-known?

And 4-5 years after the 360 came out?

If they're using it here, then I think it's safe to say their test-run with the 360 was a success.

Yeah, 4 years sounds insane to me but there's no way that they're pricing Live at $100+ a year. $10 a month with no yearly option would be pretty insane, too.

We'll wait in see though, I guess.

Yeah, I think if Sony offered a years worth of PS+ along with the PS4 for maybe $400 and advertise that you get free games, themes, betas, and more with it the. They could easily beat out Microsoft. (That's assuming they decide to not charge for online). Saying that they have free MP and no always online with it would kill MS's advertising.

I said a long time ago that mandatory Kinect would drive up the cost of the machine. This is a huge boon for Sony because if the consoles are near the same price then the advantage clearly goes to the PS4 worldwide.

Kinda interested what "Stingray" is all about. It must be a stripped down 360 like a Wii mini. So I wonder what's being taken out?

I really hope that's the reason. Please be the dual APU and get rid of the always online internet connection please.

I can deal with the other crap.

2 APUs of equal power doesn't even make sense. That's what many of the technical people said in that thread. Why not just juice up the single APU?

They might have gotten away with $300 on its own, but not with a subscription. If true, time to write it off, anything more expansive than an iPad without a subscription won't sell.

"500$ for a normal unit, or 300$ for a subscription model."

This can't be right not with the Specs that we have seen unless it's coming with full Windows 8 & they are adding that to the price.

Meanwhile, at MS headquarters...

I'm fairly skeptical that all the rumors we've been hearing lately will pan out though. Only thing to do is wait and see

The problem with the subscription based model is that it loses it's appeal as the system gets older. If in 2-3 years from now, you buy the next Xbox with a subscription, you'd potentially be paying more than at launch compared to past generations due to future price drops having more of an impact and the proximity of next next gen coming out and making the next Xbox less valuable when compared to it's cost.

If the mandatory subscription is more than 1-2 years, I can't see how anyone outside of launch will find the model attractive.

American consumers happily plop down $200 and sign a 2-year contract every two years for the latest iPhone (or Android) device. And they do this GLADLY because it avoids a $650 upfront payment.

You are the minority.

Didn't I just say those two are very different things? A phone you're paying for to talk and access internet anywhere is very different to a games console that have been paid up front for over twenty years. Any figures on how the subscription 360 did?

I wish he had it mixed up and it was actually $500 full package with Kinect 2 and $300 for base model without Kinect 2!.

Don't see myself getting it straight away if the price is that high (or whatever its UK equivalent is), will be interesting to see how Microsoft justify that price.

Subscription model is a cool option but I plan to let my Xbox Live account run out at the end of the year as I hardly use it any more and I just don't see the value in it since I've started using PS+ 3 months ago so that route isn't for me.
