[RUMOR] Paul Thurrott: Xbox 720 is expensive: $500 or $300 for sub model, 5/21 Unveil

Wasn't that kind of a Best Buy exclusive and not well-known?

And 4-5 years after the 360 came out?

If they're using it here, then I think it's safe to say their test-run with the 360 was a success.

Well, it surely won´t hurt to add a prescription model but i highly doubt the new Box is going to fly off the sehlves because of that. It´s no IPhone.

Didn´t eat the 360 one up.

the $99 360 subscription was tiny in scope. Announcing a next gen xbox, showing off a new halo or CoD footage, then announcing a subscription plan for a cheaper console will appeal to tons of people that already pay for Live anyways.

"500$ for a normal unit, or 300$ for a subscription model."

This can't be right not with the Specs that we have seen unless it's coming with full Windows 8 & they are adding that to the price.
It can be right if Kinect 2.0 is expensive as fuck.

499 is fine with me for both PS4 and Xbox 3. 16gb iPad is that price for Christ's sake
The iPad'a also more multipurpose, but I think the bigger reason is the fact it's costing more to do the same kind of jumps we saw before. Though a lot of that has to do with the fact they were sort of insane (Microsoft being mainly forceful though) the last two generations, and gaming hardware progression slowing down some. Moore's law seems to be more or less ending too, so there won't even be big enough jumps it'd seem for next-next generation to come fast.

Im not so sure, not if you have to pay full wack for live alot more than most pay for live now, and then with patcher etc saying they expect the live service price to go up, im not so sure people will jump on it if live goes up to say £20-30 a month with that contract.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
I'm fascinated that the subscription model most likely ensures MS is doubling down militantly on Live prices (maybe even a raise with a Platinum tier for game streaming?), and trying to force its value proposition by making the "full price" pack seem like poor value. Wonder just what level of fucking atrocious gimped console functionality the Live Silver model is going to be when MS is trying to sell those contracts.

I mean if Sony swans out, states multiplayer online gaming is free as ever, but its the Gakai stuff thats the pay tier alongside the awesome PS+ value, the general public will only have themselves to blame if theyre still paying Live fee's for peer-to-peer another 5 years down the line.

That Stingray model actually sounds pretty cool. I have a handful of 360 exclusives I want to play, so $99 for a barebones edition (honestly don't need much) sounds good to me

I think "always online" for playing games is starting to make more sense not for any of the bullshit reasons given for how it provides an install base to do interesting online stuff with (can be done any platform on game by game basis, so yea... fuck off with that BS), but rather to keep track of the models purchased via subscription.

Is Stingray the second SKU then? If they can push new functionality and the 360 at $99 then thats quite a big thing. Though its not a big vote of confidence to push a brand new cheap (sounds margin breaking too) last gen console alongside your expensive next gen console.

Didn´t eat the 360 one up.

Introducing a subscription model requires coordination between retailers and a variety of other partners which is why the 360 was introduced in a limited way in MS stores only.

With the introduction of a new console, they've (theoretically) planned the console design (services/features), coordinatedwith their business partners/retailers, as well as created their marketing campaign around the subscription concept at least in part. If this turns out to be true (which I think it will be personally), it's going to be a main pillar of their campaign to consumers, just like Kinect was last time. It could of course still fall flat, but it can't be compared to the 360 version which was just a test run for all intents and purpose

I actually wouldn't mind this if they were using the 360 for all the services and social shite (like that Microsoft guy did actually say) and the 720 was a pure gaming powerhouse but thats probably wishful thinking.

Putting all that stuff on the 360 would defeat the purpose. Old hardware, old OS, no multitasking etc. Force people to develop for two platforms?

As someone who has never not had a Live subscription this could end up being a good deal in the end.

They probably think they can pull off an Apple..

I like that I'm the consumer most fucked over by an always online console, since I don't buy used games anyways. So my game buying decisions will give MS and the publishers exactly the same profit as last gen, except now if my internet drops I'm going to get booted from my singleplayer game...

Feels nice as their "ideal" (read:not financially minded at my own peril) consumer who buys new, launch week.

Wow, the arrogance in that video is scary, because people are on live they wont jump ship he says wtf.

Honestly, I'm pretty curious what will happen in terms of this. People jumped ship from PS2 to 360 but now a days there's a lot more integrated stuff it terms of achievements and profiles stuff. Plus if MS has BC and Sony doesn't it'll be really interesting to see if people want to jump ship or not. There's a lot more reason not to this time around.

As someone who's main system is by far 360, if the rumors are true i'm definitely jumping to PS4, but i'm curious if the masses will do the same.

Possibly not rational but I can't help but imagine that for all the reasons that GAF hates this the general public will eat this concept up and it will be a big hit

For those who live in big cities where there is reasonably good internet available? I could imagine so.

But for those who live in communities where the internet is either poor or non-existent, I could imagine this will be a much harder sell. And this is exactly the type of crowd that I don't think MS can afford to just shut out.

In this shittier economy in the United States compared to mid 2006, I wonder if $499 US Dollars is going to be the new $599 US Dollars?

Did you even read the rumor? No BC.

Man the only thing I could have thought of counteracting the always online stuff was potentially a significantly low subsidized price point, but 300 dollars is not low enough imo.

Can Someone explain to me how the subscription based model will look attractive 2-3 years from now? By then, you're locking yourself into a console for years with next next gen right around the corner...

While it is looking like I'll have no use for the 720, I can say that I am actually curious about this 'Stingray' 360. I plan to buy another one, load up my digital library and save my current slim as a backup.

Because the sales didn´t go up?

That's... not really good evidence of anything.

The fact that they were using it as a test-run for their new console and are now using it on their new console indicates it worked as they had planned.

Eh?, the coming gen will last at least as long as this one if not closer to 10 years.

Hell, I bet people won't jump because of Gamerscore (achievements).

I read some crazy rumour the other month about the PS4 fishing your achievements from other platforms. Since its all accessable info on a server they could match up to the equivalent trophy values, that'd be a smart way to have Achieve-bro's 'jump out'.
