NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

LOVE Shadowgate/Uninvited/Déjà Vu (I even bought the Game Boy Color twofer of Déjà Vu and its follow-up, Ace Harding: Lost in Las Vegas - which was even previewed in Nintend Power but never saw a release on the system).

I have yet to play Princess Tomato, but it's in the ol' backlog.

Rygar 8 Bit

Jaguar 64-bit
deja vu is one of the first games to make me feel uneasy the murdered guy up in the office holding a phone that had its cord cut with that crazy music playing jebus

So I'm genuinely curious. I've never used a Famicom controller and I've always wondered if it was superior to the NES version. Are they the same?

They're almost identical, except the Famicom ones are hardwired and have a microphone input. The controller shells are actually interchangable.

I'm never going to get Mega Man :(

why is it so expensive?

Yeah, it's blown up recently. A couple months ago some vendor at the flea market was selling Mega Man for $30. I was shocked and I passed on it, but when I looked it up later that was actually on the lower end of the going price, lol.

I can't wait for the HDMI modded Topleader kits that are supposed to come out this summer.

Some how I ended up with 3 famicoms.

I passed on a $50 copy a few months back. I regret it. I seem to do this a lot but it's only because it was expensive to me at the point in time. Wasn't it a pretty common game?

Edit:

I still think NES had some of the most badass and misleading boxarts LOL

Indeed it was. Especially as it was re-released in the early 90s when Mega Man blew up. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the original release had the round seal of quality whereas the re-release featured the later oval-shaped seal of quality.

@blizzardjesus: Please don't have your Zelda graded. It's such a waste of time and resources for not much in the end. You don't need some self-proclaimed kings of toy grading to rate your game in order to appreciate it... Like matthiewheels says, put it inside a hard clear shell yourself for protection.

Blizzardjesus, whoa. Nice black box set, you should get those hard crystal cases for them. Someday I'll have a NES museum, it'll be a while though...

Nazo No Murasamejou is crazy good fun. Really sweet music, too.
Graphics aren't up to par, but it's amazing to discover such a well made action game from Nintendos earlier days.

I think the number of screws is different on the original release compared to the re-release. If it's common then I'll just wait for the price to crash.

Yeah, I really dislike VGA ratings.

It's more so of having it protected, would cry if anything happend to it.. It's more than doubled in value from when i got it.(if i were to sell it at some point, graded copies tend to go for more, or i'll be buried with it.)

Yea I'm gonna order a buch of the protector cases in a few months, i need them for nes, snes, and gb/gba.

Best Nintendo system.

Bionic Commando
Blaster Master
Bubble Bobble
Castlevania
Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse
Chip 'N Dale: Rescue Rangers
Contra
Double Dragon II: The Revenge
Duck Tales
Gradius
Kid Icarus
Life Force
Mega Man 2
Mega Man 3
Metal Gear
Metroid
Ninja Gaiden
Snake Rattle 'n' Roll
Super C
Super Mario Bros.
Super Mario Bros. 2
Super Mario Bros. 3
The Legend of Zelda

Epic list, thanks for that! I've had to give it a hard edit as we didn't get most of them in Euro-land, but these are the ones I loved in the 80s, have played again in the last few years and think they still stand up.

I've got all my fingers crossed for getting Megaman IV on the 3DS eshop next month as I missed it first time sound.

Awesome console though, like all the best ones, loads of dross alongside loads of solid gold.
Also- Darkwing Duck! Another great Capcom platformer. They were on fire in the 8/16 bit era.

Some of the great early adventure games too.

Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom

Deja Vu

Shadowgate

Uninvited

Deja Vu was absolutely incredible.
The music was amazing.

I remember my dad and I would sit and try and figure this game out for hours.

I was maybe 7-8 years old. But I was hooked.

I can't tell you how many times we restarted the game, trying different scenarios.

But....we never figured it out and always ended up dead or in jail.

Everything just feels right and that cover made me think of Andrew Dice Clay.

Andrew Dice Clay punching bitches 100 feet into the air. That's the best game you could have made in the late 80's early 90's.

Edit: Getting a port of TMNT The Arcade game was like the best thing ever as a kid!
Lol @ Andrew Dice Clay. :)

So true regarding TMNT2: The Arcade Game. I remember vividly playing the game at my friend's place when he received it. Nintendo Power had me hyped big time for the game and it didn't disappoint. (When I came back home that night, Scott Norwood was about to miss a field goal against the Giants in the Super Bowl.)

My NES is still alive and kicking, I always have to use Game Genie with my games to get any sort of contact with the pins though. Works like a charm!

As shitty as Friday the 13th may be, it's probably one of the most entertaining NES games I've played. The amount adrenaline the builds up when you know that you're about to fight Jason is amazing. I've never beat it because all the kids end up getting slaughtered.

Nice thread!

I actually bought a fake nintendo not long ago with a bunch of games , so much fun.

The console sucks tho , retroduo i think it is - the sound is way off on some games and ruins it.

I just got one of those. The nes side is bad, but I bought it for the SNES side and that runs perfectly, so far only Star Ocean doesn't work.

but $10 each for Panic Restaurant, Power Blade 2, Dragon Fighter, Princess Tomato and Duck Tales 2.)

Wow man, was that recent?

As for NES originals that dont work right, just try swapping out the 72pin connector.

i gotta look up Zombie Nation now...

also, Tekno: while rounding up Retro-GAF, did PCE/TG-16/DUO etc have a thread? if not, it should sometime!

I would love a PC Engine thread.

For that one, you probably are. ;-)

Would love to see a TurboGrafx/Turbo Duo/PC Engine thread myself.

Heh I wish, especially since that was one of my "dream" systems since the first time we got that Lords of Thunder promo tape in the mail (knew nothing of the system before). By then, I couldnt find it in stores and the SNES was on the way...so no Christmas list spot for the TG.

I suggested it, but alot of people said it would probably be shortly lived. Imo it would help since I just found out about Compile's Spriggan shooter for the Super CD (bought a recapped PCengine DUO from PCenginefx forums last year). I want to get it modded eventually, if only to be able to play a few of the cheaper TG 16 cards / RPGs that arent on CD.

I lucked out so hard that it would have gotten me a good item drop in Diablo 3, I found a top loader NES for ONE DOLLAR at a sale being held at a church, thanks to old people that didn't know better. For one dollar, it now takes absolute minimal effort short of simply playing on VC or whatnot to get a game working. Even games I thought were broken were brought to life. Legendary dollar bill right there.

Heh thats better than my box of Dreamcast stuff for a 5 dollar pizza story :D

The Little Nemo box art needs to be in the not-obvious recommendations section of the OP.

New 72 + disabling the 10-NES gave new life to my console. Can't recommend it enough.

What would disabling 10-NES do? Something with region encoding?

The Little Nemo box art needs to be in the not-obvious recommendations section of the OP.

I thought about putting that in the set, but i'd like to think anything Capcom would be an obvious recommendation from the 8-16bit days. I think a third row might fit nicely, so maybe...but I dont want the OP to be too cluttered. If some other uncommon/hiddem gem recommendations start popping up, i'll throw it in.

Already got interest in Whomp'em, so that would be there too. Three rows is my limit though.

Also whats the best way to get a famicom adapter that wont break the bank?

Two years ago for Duck Tales 2 and about five years ago for Princess Tomato. The others I purchased in the early 2000s. Funny story: I was already a pretty big NES/SNES collector at the time, but in 2003 when I saw Panic Restaurant for the first time at a flea market, I hesitated before buying. I recognized it was a Taito game I had never seen nor heard about before, thus it piqued my interest. I offered the guy $7 because I thought $10 was too much to ask for (yeah, shame on me...). Because she was tired of being at yet another flea market, my girlfriend grew impatient and ended up buying the game for me!

Understood. I just personally knew more people who knew about Faxanadu than knew about Little Nemo.

I still have serious nostalgia when I see black box games. I remember the first year, going into video rental stores and seeing those boxes on the shelf. I didn't get my own NES until the second year.

As for recent activity, I picked up Kick Master CIB. It's just as fun as the YouTube reviews made it seem. I thought the method of collecting experience and magic (dead enemies shoot them into the air and you must catch) would be frustrating, but it just adds a nice tension and skill factor.

I'm almost done with my NES collection. By "done", I mean owning every game I want to play (currently 43 games), with manuals. I refuse to even play a game if I do not have the manual.

Just a manual or also a box?

Might I ask why you feel you must have a manual?

I'm the same way on PS1 era and up. I require a case and manual, otherwise I don't want it.

But for NES...it's just more difficult and expensive to obtain all that.

I really wish I didn't throw my boxes away as a kid :p

Does anyone know what I should expect to pay for an original Famicom and Disk System in Japan?

Even better if you know a good place to buy one in Tokyo, Kyoto or Fukuoka.

I have the AV Famicom, but I've always wanted that classic "cream and azuki bean"-colored original. And the Disk System is a must.

I don't care for boxes. When I get them, I just resell them. I always read the manual before playing and refer to it if needed. I play all my games using no outside help, no FAQs, YouTube, websites, anything. I only used the materials originally included with the game.

I should have done what you do with the manual, but now it's too late, I have too many games. Also, I agree wholeheartedly with your view regarding the boxes. Like someone else said in the thread, they often are gross/disgusting, whereas a nice little pamphlet like the manuals is both clean and useful.

It eliminates the blank screen/resetting issue

About a month ago a got a big NES lot at a yard sale. One of the carts was a 5-screw Gyromite with the Famicom converter inside.
Kinda tempted to start buying Famicom games now.

Yeah, but it's a particular Capcom game not everybody would know about, especially since the movie it's based on is very obscure as well (something that drowned in its era).

+2 for Crystalis. Remember the trick that you could warp everywhere if you used a second controller?

+3 for Crystalis. I rented the crap out of it when I was a kid but I never beat it or even came close. I bought it off eBay last year and loved the heck out of it. Nostalgia is a great thing. I like the story as well and obviously ripped offed the cover art for my avatar as well.

I really don't think the game is as bad as people make it out to be. I had a friend who was obsessed with it and watching him play and explain the mechanics was actually pretty enjoyable. It's no Sweet Home of course but for an NES horror game it was pretty serviceable.

I got one of these from a Hogan's Alley game. Perfect for when I want to play some FF II, FF III or Rock Board.

I'm glad that GAF has all the bases covered for these games.

I always wondered how we went from a futuristic take on the story of Urashima Taro, to Xexyz.. I mean really, how did they come up with that name?

I also only really seek out complete games if they're discs. I'd rather spend money on games, not boxes or manuals. Stuff like ps1, gamecube, ps2 are generally cheaper complete than cart games anyways.

Am I right that the only advantage the Disk System had over carts was the extra sound chip?

As much as I love the SNES version of Turtles in Time. I gotta say that Manhattan Project is better in almost every aspect. Levels, cast, game play, bosses, length etc. IMO best TMNT game

Not many people liked this game, but I fucking loved it. I was never able to finish it as a kid and revisited a few years ago via emulator and still couldn't manage to finish it. This game bullied me as a kid and still can't get my revenge
