Did the new 3DS updates fix software issues? Rayman 3D and more run super smooth now.

Since the newest 3DS update I've noticed significant boosts in FPS/general polish in multiple games.

Rayman 3D transformed from a sub-30 FPS slog into a very smooth platformer. Even going back to the hilariously-laggy levels produces smoothness not too far from the golden PS2 version. Load times are significantly decreased.
No longer takes Rayman like ten seconds to do his spinning animation when he respawn upon death.

Maybe it's time to give Rayman 3D a second chance?

Sonic Generations no longer drops frame rate in pretty much every mode. Less load times when checking StreetPasses and loading unlockables. (Online is still laggy though.)

Ridge Racer no longer gets the occasional stutters mid-race and the time trials are actually playable now.

What do you guys think? Is this a subtle balancing of the software and hardware or is there something bigger going on here? Also, please try out your older 3DS games and see if they perform any better.

UPDATE: This is not a placebo effect. Multiple users have reported smoother frame rate in the above titles and more:
General 3DS interface is smoother. Less load time for games and apps.

Mii Plaza received multiple performance boosts as well.
There are no longer random crazy frame rate drops when receiving new puzzle pieces and fighting Find Mii I/II bosses.

SwapNote messages are delivered more smoothly. For example, when multiple new notes arrive they appear instantly rather than taking upwards of 2 seconds each per delivery.

I need to try Sonic again then. Not sure how this is possible though. Did Nintendo suddenly use less cpu power for the system than usual?

Damn... I think I may have sold this one too. I'll have to check. Bought it as launch filler for the system.

I'm concerned as to why you own any of these games :/

Placebo effect? I don't have any of these games, but it'd be interesting if someone could get actual numbers.

Wouldn't the games need a patch? I can't imagine a system update would enhance random software performance.
Not if it's a matter of system library updates. Could be kernel enhancements, IO improvements, graphics layer improvements, anything.

I'll try Ridge Racer after work. And i hope they smotthed the performance, because the last races were unbearable. At least smooth 30fps would be great (in 3D).

Now you mention it, I haven't noticed any slowdowns whatsoever in Luigi's Mansion since the last update.

Thanks for checking into it guys! I've been playing more Rayman 3D and it's definitely not a placebo effect or lowered expectations. There was a very small frame rate drop early on but the rest has been smooth sailing.

You know what you need to check? Bit Trip Saga
I wish! But I own the Complete edition on the Wii. But if the eShop version has the slowdown I doubt the physical copy would be fixed.

Now you mention it, I haven't noticed any slowdowns whatsoever in Luigi's Mansion since the last update.

Do you mean the horrendous frame rate halfing in the first few rooms of A-1 through A-3? It's funny to see Luigi suddenly speeding about in the large main room with the fountain and fish tank after trudging through the garage.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
I've heard Sonic Racing runs much better too. Can someone confirm this?

What makes the eShop version different from the cart?

Nothing. Just curious if this update affects only cart-based titles or also applies to digital downloads of said titles.

Going to try the Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed demo and see if anything's changed.

Oh ok, I misunderstood your statement.
I hope someone does try and report back.

This is something I immediately noticed once I've updated my 3DS to 5.0/1.0-11. Also, the slowdown in MiiPlaza Puzzle Swap and Find Mii is gone.

It would be interesting if these improvements are real. I can't imagine what Nintendo would have done to cause it though (optimization?)

Curious to see if this is real or not, but my overall feeling is that it's not. Hope I'm wrong!!

Interesting... I'm curious to see this verified. I picked up Rayman 3D for a song a while back and haven't played it yet, so this would be awesome if true.

I noticed that when the 3ds boots up the icons show up instantly instead waiting 3 or so seconds. The web browser is way faster as well.

Tried Mercenaries 3D, same performance pre update and post update. Tried with the 3D settings on. So I guess this either works only with a few selected games or maybe 2D only?

Edit: still some slowdown in 2D mode

Hmm, my friend has Rayman 3D and a 3DS he hasn't touched in forever so it's probably still on 3.x or something. I'll try to get a hold of him today and bring my updated 3DS with me. I'll try the game on his 3DS first and then switch over to mine. Or maybe the other way would be better now that I think about it. If it runs smoothly on mine, stuttering and lagging would probably be more noticable afterwards.

Okay, just tried Ace Combat and the frame rate still chugs when you fly through smoke or near explosions. Not sure if it's as much though; it's been ages since I last played this.

So strange.

I was just thinking to myself that running in Moga Village in Monster Hunter 3U seems so much smoother now, but chalked it to my imagination. Maybe not?

I just did. I have the retail version of it and started tinkering around with Bit Trip FLUX since it's the only game that I notice the framerate is lowered, making the game go very slow.

And nope, the update didn't do nothing for that. In Abyss mode, it runs smooth but once you escape from there, the framerate lowers. Too bad. =[

The Mii Plaza thing I did notice. Mostly because I have some level 7 friends I use in Find Mii II, and some of them are way in the back. Used to take much longer to scroll back to get to them all the time.

Popped in Rayman, and I am noticing an improvement in frame-rate. Much smoother.
Might actually play the game now.
