Mickey Mouse is returning to star in Castle of Illusion, a fantastical HD reimagining of the classic Sega Genesis game. The game is scheduled to release in summer of 2013. We know that Castle of Illusion has a special place in many gamers’ hearts. Sega studios Australia is putting lots of care into this new 2D/3D game.

Our plan is to deliver a fully reimagined experience that takes advantage of the power of PS3 with all new graphics and new adventures, while at the same time making sure that the game maintains the Disney magic that the original Castle of Illusion captured in 1990.

We have also been working very closely with the director of the original game, who is now at Disney Interactive. We are having a blast working with her to realize many of the elements that were intended for the original game, but couldn’t be achieved until now due to the technical limitations of previous generation consoles. If you have played the original game, you will also see that we have kept intact many of the major iconic elements of the game that helped define this groundbreaking game at the time of its original release.

Look out for our developer interviews and behind the scenes videos to catch the Sega Studios Australia team and members of the original game development team share their experience working on Castle of Illusion.

Iconic SEGA Genesis Title Returns to Consoles in Summer 2013

LONDON & SAN FRANCISCO– 15th April, 2013 –SEGA® Europe Ltd., and SEGA® of America, Inc. in collaboration with Disney Interactive today announced the upcoming digital release of Castle of Illusion staring Mickey Mouse™, a complete re-imagining of the iconic Mega Drive/Genesis side-scrolling adventure first released in 1990. Developed by Sega Studios Australia, Castle of Illusion Featuring Mickey Mouse will be available worldwide for digital download on Xbox LIVE® Arcade for Xbox 360®, PlayStation®Network and Windows PC in summer 2013.

Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse first debuted on the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive in 1990 to critical acclaim. Completely rebuilt from the ground up, Castle of Illusion has stunning visuals and new gameplay mechanics. Fans will enjoy the original storyline as they help Mickey save Minnie from the evil witch, Mizrabel.

Something tells me the art style is going to suck worse than the new Duck Tales one.. A straight port would have been fine, Disney.

I guess it's confirmed to be a remake.

Note how there is also no logo besides just Sega, on Ducktales, Wayforward was mentioned. Maybe it's made in-house by Sega (I kinda doubt this)

EDIT: Sega Studios Australia huh?

The only complaint I have about those screens is the jaggies, and the PC version will take care of those, nicely.

Umm, didn't Sega Studios Australia just get closed down?

Anyway looks better than I imagined. Gonna be interested to see it in motion now.

Weird that it's only for PS3 and not PS3/Vita when it was rated for both.

Other rated non-Sony versions should still be coming I guess.

I really love the direction this remake has taken. From the trailers to those screens, they've actually nailed it, so far.

What the hell? I would have preferred this to the late port of a bad game like epic mickey 2 for vita!

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
I kinda want a Vita version. :( oh well guess I'll wait for the press release.

Art direction looks way better than what Ducktales is doing. Never played the original so I'm excited to give this a whack, World of Illusion is what you get me all hot and heavy though.

Is it too much to hope they include pixel perfect version of original?

Yes.

Looks pretty good! Interesting to see a remake of this and Ducktales within the same season.

Quackshot, Rescue Rangers and World of Illusion next pls.

Is it 2D? 3D? I'm confused. Looks pretty though. EDIT: Oh I guess it's both. Huh. Well, it worked for Galaxy!

I'm just happy that it's a PS3-exclusive. :)

Edit:
F***, I'm wrong. :(

you know you're doing well when you get happy about people possibly not being able to purchase a video game

Guys.

Has there ever been an extremely good platformer that used this diagonal perspective? I get the love for Rayman, but every single platformer that uses this perspective always sucks.

Always. No exception.

Why? Cause you give away the pixel precision you get from the platforms. If I don't know exactly where to land it directly competes with the core idea behind a platformer.

Castle of Illusion didn't do that:

That video looks horrible.

Look at the stiffness of when the thunder hits and how he just morphs into the pose with the lantern

Notice how his eyelids flash horribly.

Pretty shitty if you ask me.

The game screenshots, however, look ok.

Also, what is this "tape mode" on youtube? That's pretty funny.. :D

Best Mickey game confirmed?

The blog was also posted by a Japanese spokesperson, along with original in-house Sega devs giving Interviews, means that they are doing a pretty serious effort even by the Japanese branch.

Makes me excited for the future of Sega's digital route, if this is any indication.
