My 37" Toshiba TV has a VGA input. Where can you buy these adapters?
What did you guys buy at launch? We didn't have much of a launch line-up in Australia, iirr I got Blue Stinker, Ready2Rumble and Sega Rally.
I finished Blue Stinker because there wasn't much else to play, took R2R back for a refund and loved Sega Rally.
Soon after that I remember getting Speed Devils and loving it too.
Eventually all the really good games came out, but I have fondest memories of Seaman, UFC and Tokyo Bus Driver.

I just got em off ebay. i dont recall them being very expensive, unless u want the officially licensed ones.

i think between my circle of friends and i we got all the launch games really worth getting. i personally picked up sonic adventure, power stone, and soul calibur. we all picked up our consoles after school and spent the entire day at my house just trying everything before spending the whole night with soul calibur.

They've definitely increased in value lately. I remember getting my VGA box for around $15 shipped, but I see most of the sold ebay listings are now going for $50+

I needed a second one last year and someone offered to sell me one (the black version) for less than $10. I counter-offered and gave him $20 shipped since I new they were worth more than $10.

I've noticed the cheapest ones don't have a box, but are instead a straight cable with the dreamcast plug on one end and a VGA on the other. Are these just as good?:

The VGA Box was the only accessory I ever bought for my Dreamcast (besides the VMU obviously). When I first saw Soul Calibur running on a monitor I just could never look back.
I never understood why there were games that didn't support it. Apparently it's just a flag that has to be active. There was a method to make your backups self-boot that made every single game compatible.

Goodjob on the keyboard and Typing of the Dead. The game itself and the typing quirks on the bosses were particularly awesome.

Think I'm gonna pass on that one That first one you posted can be had on ebay for ~$60. I might have to bite the bullet and get it.
I got it a little after launch (9/30), but I think I had Sonic Adventure and Power Stone.

i've done it with vga. it looked pretty good but not as nice as hooking it up to my crt monitor.

I was looking at those ones too. They look kinda cheaply made but I'm gonna give them a try I think. They're the most reasonably priced option at least. I've benn looking for a while and I don't think you'll find any cheaper than that.

So I just bought a VGA-to-component converter in the hopes of being able to hook my Dreamcast up to my Kuro plasma in some way other than S-Video. The Kuro must not accept the timing that come out of the VGA box because I can't see anything on the TV when I hook the VGA box up to its VGA input. I have a Hais brand VGA box that I bought back when the console was still "new":

It works fine on my old Sony Trinitron CRT monitor, so I guess the Kuro just doesn't accept whatever timings the VGA signal uses (probably doesn't like the horizontal pixel rate or something). Hopefully, the VGA-Component adapter takes care of that issue and doesn't look crappy.
The Dreamcast is going to get put in place of the Wii, which, now that I've made images of all the Wii and Gamecube games I own to use with Dolphin serves little purpose and I'll just pull it back out if my image files get lost or something and I need to re-rip my discs.
In any event, here's a shot of my Dreamcast games.
I don't really own that many games, transitioned pretty quickly over to PS2, and aside from a Game Gear, the Dreamcast is the only Sega console I've ever owned while it was actually being actively supported (I bought a Genesis and SegaCD last year for the first time).
I've played all of them except for Ecco, and I never finished Sonic Adventure or Jet Grind Radio (honestly don't really like Jet Grind Radio despite the love it gets). However, Phantasy Star Online is still the single best online gaming experience I've ever had, and I've never really played an online game as religiously since (put a decent amount of time into FFXI even though I didn't get leveled very much in that). Playing PSO with a bunch of GAF people at the time was great fun - even though it was through dial-up (I wish I had bought a BBA).
What would people recommend I hunt down? Yes, I did own Shenmue, but I traded it in or sold it shortly after getting it (long before it was worth anything) because at the time I really couldn't stand the game (and made my stance well known about it here on GAF), but perhaps nowadays I'd like it more, who knows, so maybe I'll pick it up. Not sure how I'd play the second game though.

I never played a Phantasy Star Online game, but I am curious ...
I know Sega took down the official servers years back, but is there any part of the game worth playing without being able to connect online? It's pretty easy to pick-up a used copy of PSO for dirt cheap, but is there any point to own it other than collectability at this point?

The Gauntlet Legends cover art is cool. I had it for N64(so no box) and played the crap out of it back in the day. I should get that one for Dreamcast next I think.

Are those bigger DC cases custom?
That's one of the things that blew me away about the DC back in the day. It got "definitive" ports of many great games.
Yep. Clear DVD cases with custom artwork. It's one of my on going projects to make PS1 and DC games fit in with the rest of my games. Plus it makes it easier to find matching cases for games that have bad or missing cases.

What? The Podracer game was on Dreamcast as well? That's awesome. Was it any better than the n64 version? I loved that game back in the day.
Like many other new Dreamcast owners here, I'm trying to figure out the best place to get a VGA box from. I need it before Pier Solar arrives.
The higher frame rate alone makes the DC version the only version to go with.

VGA boxes have gotten ridiculous lately. I wonder if it wouldn't be cheaper to mod a DC with a VGA port straight out of the console. I'm lucky to have gotten the cheap clear one back when it was 20 bucks.
That does look quite a bit better/smoother. Maybe I'll have to pick that up at some point.
Yah, I'm going to look into modding. Not the handiest of people, but we'll see if I can't do it.

Dreamcast GAF, what are some good JP-exclusive games? I have Lack of Love, Border Down, Ikaruga, and Fighting Vipers 2 (also released in Europe, but not NA).
I have Under Defeat HD, and would really consider the DC release since really, it's a better arcade port, but the price is prohibitive.
How's Napple Tale? Any other recommendations?

Cosmic Smash is what jumps out. USA got most of the cool arcade stuff save the late STGs, and many of those late STGs are available elsewhere but not all of them. As I'm guessing you know!
The arcade stuff aside, I'm patiently waiting for fan translations of SGGG and Sakura Taisen 3 (after the first two, of course), and I'm curious about Napple Tale.
I just got in a "Used - Like New" copy of Shenmue from Amazon Warehouse. It is in great shape, though I do wish they'd throw some heatshrink over the case when shipping it - no damage though, but I haven't tried to play it yet.
Do people think spending like the $12 or so to get a copy of PSO v2 is worth it? I have no Broadband Adapter so I wouldn't be able to play it on a private server, so it would be strictly for offline play, I keep putting it in my shopping cart but then just thinking I may as well just stick to Blue Burst on the PC. Would be nice to own it on DC though and there's just something about playing original PSO on the Dreamcast controller that pushes all the right nostalgia buttons.

I asked this same question earlier on the page. Would love to know the kind of content available for single player / offline play on PSO. It's so well loved among the people who played it ... but I wonder if there is anything thats worth it offline, and how it holds up today.

They all work great although 1st player on Confidential Mission never calibrates properly.

Well I neglected to mention that I already own the original PSO for Dreamcast since the game originally launched, so I'd mainly be buying v2 to play solo through the newer content. If you've never played either and are set on getting the Dreamcast version (rather than Blue Burst for the PC - which may be freeware now actually, someone correct me), I'd at least get v2 rather than the original just because it has more levels.

Those VGA boxes are very cheap. I bought mine several years ago, and shipment was more expensive than the actual item. It was 18€ total, 11€ shipment alone.
It's a pity since VGA, being an analog signal, loves better quality components. That's why original SEGA VGA-Box is so expensive, added to limited quantity.
This is what I have and it does a wonderful job, I recommend!
EDIT: I think I never posted a pic of my collection here yet, will do later tonight if I find some time.
