Castle of Illusion Announced (Sega/Sega Australia, 360/PSN/PC), remake, screens/video

No disrespect on these remakes (this and ducktales) but industry wise, why is it easier to remake said games rather than port their 8bit/16 bit versions?

I prefer it like this, because we get 16x9 aspect ratio instead of a dreadful wallpaper with a tiny square in the middle where the gameplay plays out.

I think the screens look surprisingly good (ie. the art direction is a lot better than Duck Tales). The original music was great as well so I can't wait to see what Grant Kirkhope has up his sleeve for this remake.

Really should be a remake of the superior MS version, but I'm still happy.

Usually I don't like when they replace sprites with polygons but they did a really good job here judging by the photos. They kept the personality and vibrancy intact.

Oh, man. PC version for me. I have fond memories of going to my tiny local video store and begging my parents to rent this for me. Seeing those pics gives me so much nostalgia, even though I don't remember most of the game anymore.

And holy shit at Grant Kirkhope. YES.

You could say that about any game that doesn't have a WiiU version...
Besides you guys have Toki Tori 2 first...and that Bayo 2 game.

well yeah but no.
Disney games always sell best on Nintendo systems. always.
I think even the super lazy epic mikey2 WiiU port did best on the WiiU(so did that Sonic Racer).
there's really no excuse for not bringing it to WiiU (and/or 3DS).

Epic Mickey's price dropped like a rock after a strong ~1m debut, Epic Mickey 2 bombed, and the Wii U in general has been struggling. The lack of a Wii U version shouldn't be overly surprising.

honorless

We don't have "get out of jail free" cards, but if we did, she'd have one.
I think those are just names of achievements since there's a 12 achievement rule or something.
Valve does not require Steam releases to have achievements.

A final release may not end up happening, or may end up taking years (e.g. Final Fantasy VII) but the fact that the games are in the registry says that something either is or was in the works.

"Aladdin? No problem. Goof Troop? Sure why not"

let's not get ahead of ourselves, Nibels; I need to see Quackshot first

There are Steam achievements for Castle of Illusion, World of Illusion and Quackshot, which is what made people think they were doing another Vintage Collection to begin with. Surely they have something planned for those other two games...

wait, for real?! fuck yeah! World is the only one i lack, too

You're not the first person I've heard say this, but I personally vastly prefer the Genesis version. I played the heck out of it in college, one of my favorite games of all time.

That said, this looks pretty good too - definitely on my radar.

I'll back the MS version too...but maybe that is just music based and the fact that I played it first. There is only so much of these games that you can take, and playing Fantasia didn't help me keep enjoying the genre a great deal.

Having said that, land of illusion was even better and is still an amazing game.

Who is this so-called "original producer" now at Disney Interactive?

Because the original game was developed by the god-tier Sega Japan CS Megadrive team (Yuji Naka etc) that went on to put out Megadrive Ghouls 'n' Ghosts, Super Shinobi, not to mention the original Sonic.

Can we have a name please? Dig deeper people.

Otherwise the PR sounds like a cynical half-lie to trick the original fan base with zero pedigree from the original, rather than the more likely story: some licensing guy figured out they could rehash the old property with cheap CG (and then close the studio).

Edit:

"Re-imagined with the Disney magic of the original" - the greatness of the original had jack shit to do with "Disney magic" other than the charming intro and end boss, about 1% of the game. It stacked with awesome platforming gameplay, music and entirely original imagination from a legendary Sega Japan team.

Are they involved?

"Having a blast with the original producer who couldn't realise her (?) original vision to to technical limitations" - horseshit. CoI is considered a landmark platforming classic regardless of technology. Did a single person at the time say "gee, if only the Megadrive had more power so they could have changed this game into pseudo-3d"? Hardly.

Look past the PR spin. Graphics like this can be made for bottom dollar the days and there is no indication this "reimagination" has anything to do with that made the original a timeless video game classic, other than by cynical marketing association.

I've always wondered what the team behind the superior 8-bit Castle of Illusion went on to make. Do you know who was responsible for it?

If Kingdom Hearts III were to be released on the PSthrizzle, it would look exactly like the screenshots in the OP.

Very hard to know as Sega JP at the time tended to give their key team members fake or code names in the credits to discourage head hunting. Given Japanese lifetime employment culture at the time, most of the same folks likely went onto the 16-bit CS teams.

SWEDISH PERFECTION
I only tried Castle of Illusion a few times, never really grabbed me. I did enjoy Land of Illusion a lot though (for Game Gear, think there was a Master System version as well):

Oh man, Fantasia. I love Castle of Illusion on Genesis so much, I remember reading about Fantasia in a magazine and being so pumped for it. Bought it day one and it SUCKED. I hated that game, and therefore didn't own it for long. Such a disappointment.

Maybe World/Quackshot are unlockables within the remake of Castle of Illusion?

^I FULLY SUPPORT THIS IDEA!

Sure, which would also be stupid. Releasing games (significantly) later on other consoles is stupid as well, see e.g. Sonic Racing for 3DS. But hey, it's SEGA, who's really surprised?

Some games on PSN eventually got a PC release, even though it was months later.
While I can understand Nintendo system owners' frustration, really though: Just be patient kiddies.
...and go get and play Toki Tori 2

I'm going to pass on it because I didn't particularly enjoy Castle of Illusion on MegaDrive, but I do like how it looks.

No, two of the achievement names for Castle of Illusion are World of Illusion and Quackshot. There has been nothing pointing to SEGA doing remakes of those games yet.

Aw. Ah well will still keep hoping for a Classic Disney collection by SEGA~
Speaking of which, the XBL SoR and Golden Ax collections are by M2 right? Are they available on Steam/PC?

What the hell are you talking about?

There was no "god-tier Sega Japan CS Megadrive team" as such; there were a bunch of separate divisions that were independently responsible for different games/franchises, most of which have since been dissolved or amalgamated with other divisions.

Yuji Naka had nothing to do with any of the Disney games (or Revenge of Shinobi, for that matter) and the amount of staff crossover between the games you mentioned is quite minimal and generally inconsequential. (The one big link is Takashi Yuda, who was an artist and later art director on the Disney games who went on to work on Sonic 3&K, designing Knuckles. He's still with Sega, as far as I know.)

The director/designer on the Illusion games and Quackshot was a staffer credited only as "Emirin"--if you were going to attribute these games to any one person (something you really shouldn't do, but whatever) it'd be Emirin. We can only assume that Emirin is the same staffer who now works at Disney Interactive... only time will tell.

They said they're gonna be publishing interviews with members of the original development team, many of whim are still with Sega, so their involvement will be made clear eventually, one way or another.

Really they can't arse it up any worse than Specter did Power Of Illusion.

I feel like that game would at least be mildly acceptable short on content and all, if it wasn't for the fucking awful touch screen paint mechanic
Like I get that "two screens for one game!" is kind of that teams thing, but jesus christ that should have never made it past prototyping
