Additionally, why is it that the Vita bump exceeded most expectations, including mine? Because Sony crammed a bunch of (relative to most of the system's lineup) big software releases into the span of a month. Had the only notable software for that period been PSO2/SS/TOHR, it'd surely have dropped below 15K a few weeks ago.

I kind of wonder if it was almost ready and then they decided to take more time and/or just delay it.
Nintendo does have a bit of a history with "Game X is coming soon!... I mean in six months!".
Either way I don't think it is really a step change game, so delaying it shouldn't hurt the system too much.
Because of Nintendo publishing? Just guessing off of Nintendo saying they were going to help bring more Japanese games outside Japan. Would've been happily wrong if Square-Enix decided to publish it and Nintendo brought over the DQ games instead.
Maybe they'll switch it up on us!

Nintendo is being strangely silent as well about Wii U's terrible sales and appalling software drought, but I somehow don't think that means that they're happy with its performance or have some amazing secret plan to turn it around.

We'll find out about how they feel before the end of the month, they can't stay quiet about the end of the financial year. Shipment numbers will be interesting, I'd be surprised if they're much over 500k

Its possible, PS3 showed third parties they can survive off dedication to one home console and with the west as a major focus these days, many will continue down the PS2 style of support, albeit with muliplatform as a normalcy these day.
There are multiple indications that this year's 3DS sw will outsell last year's at least by 50% and hw will match if not exceed last year's too.
Vita finally moving towards replacing the PSP must be the new joke in these threads

Yup. Japan needs a really good home console right now (in terms of sales) for the third parties in particular. If they stick to handhelds for another generation they would lose most of their relevancy in the West.
It still amazes how well games sold on PS1. I doubt the software sales will be similar.

strictly in japan :
while many other factors have to be taken into account the two main ones( apart fror selling gangbusters) for a ps 1 redux IMO are:
1)Is Nintendo with wii u going to put up a big fight against PS4 for main console in japan or is it gonna stay where it is now ?
2) it is almost certain that the big studios are going to support PS4 however to achieve ps1 redux sony has to try to get the japan mid tier developpers onboard ( the ones who are currently supporting 3DS)
to spread the love around.
the later makes me wonder if the indie platform that sony is pushing hard could also work for those devs to get their games on ps4 instead of seeing 3DS as their only option.?
EDIT: funny thing is .if PS4 realy is ps1 redux and sells that well then it is very remenicent of N64 vs PS1 days and how that went
only differences is that the WII U isnt an oppresive system ruled by a dictator but one that almost nobody wants.

1. I have no idea. The series already regularly does around the 150k mark, but I think they would seriously consider changing the artstyle if it reached 200k or so.
2. Judging by its legs, it certainly looks like it's heading there. I'm not sure yet.
I think it's inevitable at this point, it's just a matter of when. If these legs can continue for a bit it could by the middle or end of summer. Otherwise it might have to wait for the holidays to get there.
Don´t forget Mario Party. One of the biggest Nintendo IPs in Japan. MP 9 dominated for weeks the charts in Japan.
