NPD Sales Results for March 2013 [Up5: BioShock Infinite]

Skiesofwonder

Walruses, camels, bears, rabbits, tigers and badgers.
Grew 9% over last March

3DS Hardware for this month was: 245k.

So basically they didn't mention 3DS hardware numbers because it would look weird to mention them and not WiiU hardware numbers, which are probably baddddddd.

Their WiiU SW situation has been disastrous. Some of these games were long promised.

If their big holiday games are that Luigi DLC and W101 then I smell trouble. They will likely show a new Zelda at E3 but that's not enough to gather enthusiasm for the future of SW on WiiU.

Mario Kart and a new 3D Mario seem like safe bets, especially with both being demoed at E3.

That wasn't what you said. You pointed specifically to the release date which means fuck all given how much time it had to chart.

Yeah, release date IN THE CONTEXT OF THE WII U. If you took it to be a generalization that's your fault not mine. I'm saying, a tiny fanbase + few days on the market = no chance of games charting against other (established) titles with much more going for them

5. Call of Duty: Black Ops II (360, PS3, PC, NWU)** Activision Blizzard
6. Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (3DS) Nintendo - 365K (415K with digital)

Those legs are incredible. People complain about COD games but they are clearly giving people what they want, and they don't even need any online pass nonsense to do it either.

According to NPD analyst Liam Callahan, "March 2013 saw deep declines of 32% in dollar spending for dedicated video game hardware, with stronger declines for portable hardware than for consoles. However, sales for the Nintendo 3DS grew 9% over last March. In March 2013, the Xbox 360 had the highest hardware unit sales for the 20th month in a row.”

Wait, there was a stronger decline for portable hardware, yet 3DS went up YOY when compared to March 2012? Is that right, or does that mean Vita slipped even more?

3DS hardware: ~245k (estimated as 225k march 2012)
That's actually respectable. Shame Nintendo didn't bother to brag about it.

Wii U™ owners have a ton of great games to look forward to from Nintendo and its third-party partners, including Game & Wario™ on June 23, Pikmin™ 3 on Aug. 4, Disney's Planes from Disney Interactive on Aug. 6 and Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell® Blacklist™ from Ubisoft® on Aug. 20. At the upcoming E3 trade show in June in Los Angeles, Nintendo expects to show attendees upcoming Wii U games from the Mario Kart™, Super Mario Bros.™ and Super Smash Bros.™ franchises.

I don't want games from the Super Mario Bros franchise, we had NSMBU last year. The 3D games aren't called "Bros", it's just Super Mario!

What a lineup for Wii U though, no Nintendo releases until late June, then August, and there's only 4 titles lol. Good job, Iwata. Sales must have been horrible since it makes no mention of them whatsoever.

Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon is my surprise of the year and Arguably my GOTY so far.....and Yes, I played Bioshock Infinite.

Same here! Fire Emblem is my Game of the 1st Quarter, though.

I always find it funny when Microsoft boasts about its "holding the top 6 spots" when most of those games are multiplats.

And congrats to Weegee!

At least the 3DS is up YoY in a month for once, but these numbers are still relatively mediocre.

So happy to see Luigi doing well.

WiiU can't be worse than 55k...can it? I mean it had actual releases...

I wonder if Luigi's strong sales are due to online connectivity. Wanting to play the game with friends definitely made me, and some others jump in early. If it did have an effect, hopefully this sends a message to Nintendo.

Haha, and it released on June 19 too.

The point just looks completely insane now on his part lol

Lego Batman 2: Released June 19, 2012

1. Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes (360, Wii, PS3, NDS, 3DS, PSV, PC)
2. Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier (360, PS3, PC)
3. Diablo III (PC)**
4. Max Payne 3 (360, PS3, PC)**
5. NBA2K12 (360, PS3, Wii, PSP, PS2, PC)

Well there is the whole... 7 platforms vs 1 thing... but I understand.

Vita was hot off its launch. [though hot isn't the right term to use:(]

Growth, even if it's pretty low, is one of the first notable positive signs for the 3DS in the West in quite some time, so I think Nintendo's software release strategy is starting to show some progress.

5. NBA2K12 (360, PS3, Wii, PSP, PS2, PC)

Lego Batman 2 had 7 platforms to sell on.

What's the install base for Wii U in NA right now? Is it even much past 1 million? For Undercover to chart it would have had to sell an absurdly high tie-ratio.

Seems that there's surprisingly good news for the 3DS then. That makes Nintendo's silence on the matter even more suspicious. Are we seriously talking about the WiiU being sub-50k in a five week month?

At this point Nintendo needs to unload their warchest onto Western 3rd parties for dem moneyhats. Shit is crazy.

No 3rd party would even think to do something so potentially volatile as we are seeing poor Wii U numbers during the year of the PS4/Durango launch and the potential revenue 3rd parties could receive from multiplat games far outweighing whatever amount Nintendo offered for an exclusive.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Wait, there was a stronger decline for portable hardware, yet 3DS went up YOY when compared to March 2012? Is that right, or does that mean Vita slipped even more?

The reason is easy: last March, Vita sold a little over 200k (second month, and its debut month included not even 7 days).

March 2012 Vita sold 200k (it was right following its launch). There's obviously a big decline.

Hmm that Nintendo press release not mentioning Wii U specifics makes me wonder. Could that mean we won't get the actual sales data this month for the console? If Nintendo has no reason to brag, I don't see much reason releasing such info. Or does that usually come from elsewhere regardless?

Also for those mentioning no Lego City in the Top 10, gimme a break. The U audience is way too small and that would take one TREMENDOUS and unrealistic attach rate to reach Top 10. Monster Hunter had a better chance, assuming NPD would count both the 3DS and Wii U sku's together, but oh well.

Slow start for Vita. Slow start for 3DS. Slow start for Wii U. I quietly wonder if that is going to be typical from now on for the new generation. Start with a bang, and then worse struggles than normal until a great library is built.

Only a GOW fanboy could have possibly believed that it would beat GOW.

In all seriousness, the Ascension numbers have to be a bit disappointing, especially as it was out for nearly the whole reporting period.

I'm tired of Kratos. Give Santa Monica a new pantheon. I've been taking Mythology this semester, so many good fucking choices.

More evidence that the Wii was a success by complete accident. There's no way it could have been on purpose if this is how they're handling the followup.

Beacause the hardcore early adopters usually buy software for a new system.

During the 360's first March, 3 of its console exclusive titles charted.

Let's see, the 360 was actually still selling at a decent pace and wasn't setting new records in horrible hardware sales like the Wii U. And none of the 360 games that charted are comparable to Monster Hunter, the niche of the niche, and an unlicensed Lego game.

Vita sold ~200k last year. Portable hardware was going to slip a lot.

Vita alone probably dropped 170k YoY.
