They should update their servers. Kirby's taking me six minutes to download on a 50mb/s connection, file size is 37mb.

Glad this is finally coming out.

Now to hope the summer update comes soon after E3 with everything we've ever dreamed of.

I'm really curious to see what we get in the summer update which I'm guessing will be mentioned at E3.

Until that eventually happens being able to download games while your system off will probably be big.

So no notification improvements?

This is what I want. The updates they're pushing through are cool, but I don't really care about them all that much. However, they NEED to add notifications. Remove the Wara Wara Plaza and use that space for notifications.

Glad this update is finally around the corner, the loading times are infuriating. I saw that video they did and while its certainly better, I hope they keep working on it.

looks good

With the Virtual Console, would I have to boot Wii mode to get access to the stuff I bought on that or will it show up in the Wii U menu?

Wii U and Wii are going to have separate VC services so it'll depend where you bought the game.

You have to buy those again, but for only $1 for NES games, $1.50 for SNES. It adds save states and off screen mode for those Virtual Console games.

Ehhh...
It's coming in August

Because of that I might as well wait for a potential price drop. I promised myself to buy a Wii U only when Pikmin 3 comes out to satisfy my GameCube nostalgia.

Anyways this going by this update, I think the summer one would have a Miiverse update to accommodate the 3DS and smartphone Miiverses and add even more features to online/community/friend-messaging.

I really wonder what's on tap for update 2, as this seems to contain most of the major improvements. Auto installing sounds pretty awesome though. I hate the lack of this on literally every other OS. I don't want to go to the store to get updates, things should just update.

The fact they haven't mentioned the "freezing" issue, bothers me. I hope this isn't all they are "patching" next week, and I wrote a piece about it yesterday (started it Monday, and finished it up after the Nintendo Direct). I was surprised they didn't mention anything I was hoping they would.

I hope it includes other improvements, particularly Multi-audio output. I want to use HDMI for video and red/white rca cables for audio like I do on 360 and PS3. (old hdtv)

Colors and photos for Miiverse?

The "will download/install while powered off" thing is gibberish, since obviously it can't be OFF. So there is the implication of some sort of standby mode there. But what will the actual implementation be? Will it go to standby when you turn it off only when it's downloading/installing something, then go to full-off when the install is done? Is it ALWAYS going to be in standby mode? If so, can it receive notifications, or Wii Chat requests, and light up the GamePad circle?

I mean I am sure it can't do those last things, since they weren't announced. But SOME sort of standby mode being implicit here gives me hope that the Summer update will implement more functionality and flesh it out into a fully-fledged standby mode. (Also make Wii Chat a system-level piece of software like the shop and Miiverse, so it's not completely useless.) BOY I CAN HOPE.

If this is for the spring than what is the other Summer update gonna do?

According to Iwata in January's Direct video, loading times will be improved as a two-stage process for Spring and again in Summer. Also, some new Miiverse features will be added in next week's system update while the others will be coming out in the second system update. He mentioned things like general improved usability, user-created Miiverse communities, each game having more than 1 official Miiverse community, and a filter function for accessing Miiverse posts more conveniently one-by-one. Lastly, next week's update is said to specifically include adding Miiverse access through Smartphones (it will initially be web-based but eventually it will become a system app).

Perhaps Nintendo has some plans for updating NintendoTvii as part of the Summer system update. I mean, it needs to get the ball rolling on it already, right ?

Looks like Super Mario World will be there at launch, which is great news. Was the game I wanted to play most on the Game Pad and I had hoped it wouldn't take years to get on there

How do you not care about the speed when switching and launching stuff from the home menu? This is one of the biggest issues the system has, and a helluva a lot of people agree.

Yeah. It's probably going to be like the Wii. I'm honestly a little baffled they removed the Wii's standby to begin with, but better late than never.

Definitely hoping for some expanded functionality like notifications and stuff. Maybe while in standby it can push a digital clock onto the GamePad screen (to use while docked) or something neat like that.

I think you probably were joking, but there is a giant chasm of horror between a device that is 'always online by choice' and a device that arbitrarily requires online to perform its primary function.

Downloading and installing software while the system is off is definitely welcomed.

Seems like Nintendo is putting some serious effort into the OS, but I wonder what they have in store for the second big update? This one seems to be more focused on usability aspects, so hopefully the next update will focus on adding additional features.
