Something I want to note about the teaser videos from Bethesda:

-For some reason there is a running theme of Barbed-Wire. In the first teaser, it is obvious, in the second teaser there is a metallic wire (usually molded in barbed-wire) sticking through the sunflowers, and in the third teaser the third shadow that flickers in is of barbed-wired, except the barbed part is really twisted and long. Its a reoccurring theme in all three teasers.

-The first teaser shows a Moonbeam Trio record playing, which is an old band from the 40s.

-The second teaser shows sunflowers burning. There is a guy standing behind the flowers who's face is obscured. He may be hanged as there is no way he is standing on the ground, but it is obscured.

-The third teaser looks like an environment that could have been in REmake (which makes sense as the REmake environment artist is working on the project). We see a window and shadows flickering. There are three shadows, and I think the first one is a snake, the second is a person, and the third is barbed wire.

I assume all videogames are the work of a team unless they are one man indie projects but some figures become emblematic of the thing they are working on. That is fine for me and I would like more visible industry figures. I've enjoyed the games he's associated with and would give equal credit to the individual teams. He finds good projects to get in front of.

Hyped for Zwei after a long series of horror letdowns and would like to believe it could reencourage genre enthusiasm

He never really took credits on being 'the dude that did all the work' though as far as I know, it's just us hyping it :p

Making games have always been teamwork and even JP seem to have helped pitching in ideas and concepts on god hand.

Ultimately he's the producer for some of the games so he would have to be making all the management decisions and getting the right people on the job.

Movies are also teamwork but there's always someone at the helm, It the same probably with the great majority of video games but it seems to be frowned upon to be the "director" or the "auteur" in the videogame industry, that's why its surprising when you hear about it and you start recognizing people like Ken Levine or Hideo Kojima. Hopefully Shinji Mikami did work on what he said he work on and that newbot guy is incorrect otherwise ill be really sad if hes been lying for a good part of his career.

And as far as I can remember from old interviews, he never really tried to dispel the notion either.

Yeah, it's teamwork, but some people in the industry are portrayed like they're mostly responsible of how the games turned out. I guess media and fans in every entertainment area want to grab on to someone, who personifies the brand in some way.

It's pretty much just the fault of the fans, some of us worship kamiya like god too, we also didn't really know much about the inner workings of Capcom's team back in the RE days without social media, and we still don't usually know now, and because of that some of us still treats Capcom as a single entity and thinks Itsuno leads everything in devil may cry and dragon's dogma until someone else gets to be interviewed.

but looking at Tango Gameworks and Platinumgames, while Mikami is actually incharge as a producer or/and director, they now have blogposts from their employees and is a lot more transparent:

http://platinumgames.com/tag/kiyohiko-sakata/

http://platinumgames.com/games/vanquish/

and here's a blog post about hiroki kato and his role on vanquish:

Of course it's bullshit. That News Bot guy might be on the money with stupid character concepts that never were, but him trying to speak authoritatively on what Mikami's duties as a director on RE4 were was clearly him just taking tidbits he heard and impressing his own ideas on them.

And yeah, where the sauce at.

Without being able to see the sources for a lot of what News Bot claims, I don't know how to take those statements. It sounds to me like Mikami could just be a relatively hands-off director compared to Kamiya and that he's mainly good at organizing teams capable of making great games. I have heard a few times that Itsuno is sort of similar (that he isn't as hands-on as Kamiya and isn't as personally involved in game design, but as a director he is still extremely capable). A lot of those statements are just tearing into Mikami for a couple of goofy ideas he had during development too, they seem kind of unfair.

It's fucking News Bot, he was posting nutty shit in the RE6 thread about how RE4 had a terrible english localization even though the japanese version was also in english.

In his defense, the RE games' scripts were written in Japanese first. The Japanese script is not exactly the same as the English one, even if the English dialogue is also in the Japanese game. God Hand is the same way. I have no idea if what he says about RE4's localization being bad is true (although I think he has done a good job of proving that RE games have had a history of having bad translations, especially with files and backstory stuff), but his point there shouldn't be totally disregarded.

I hope JP doesn't mind his tweets being posted here in the topic, but I think they are detailed and inclusive enough to put an end to that discussion thread and continue the hype train for Zwei's reveal tomorrow.

Mikami has always been involved in projects that I thought were imaginative and had excellent design, and as anyone can tell you who's worked on game development, creative directors bring the vision together and work closely with the team to utilize everyone's talents to alter, and yet, realize that vision. You need to be knowledgeable on almost all-sides of game development and work closely and express your ideas clearly and vividly and be detailed in direction and decisions. And I would assume there's very good reason he has always had nothing but respect from people who have worked with him.

Wow at that thread. The crazy obsessive RE fan site crowd and the game employee Facebook stalkers are creepier than the games they love.

I know you're not talking about me JP.

I only stalk your twitter ;_;

News Bot is likely too harsh for someone who has an incredible track record doing what he does. Ultimately, he should be viewed as a face for a posse of talented individuals, some of who are exactly that and follow him through projects. On the other hand, it does highlight how silly fanboys can get with some of their comments, especially when they may be pitting Mikami's efforts against those who are just as responsible for Mikami's previous successes.

He's likely the more informed on the topic than anyone else. In a contest of what is most likely, the evangelicalism aimed at Mikami (or any sole person) is hardly a reality compared to games being made by many talented individuals whom couldn't do it without each other. Of course, that doesn't exactly fit with how people want to celebrate others, especially when it comes to "auteurs" (or those who desperately want to be seen as such).

This is exactly right - games aren't made by just one guy (at least not the games we're talking about). Just like when it comes to movies and music we like to celebrate one guy's accomplishments because it's easier to idolize a person than an entire team. Mikami could not have possibly made any of the games he directed by himself, and those games would likely not have turned out well if it weren't for many of the key talent outlined in that series of posts. Yet that doesn't really say anything bad about his ability as a director.

I don't like those posts by Newsbot because they just reek of scouring interviews for mentions of who came up with what idea or what evidence there is on paper of Mikami creating something. It's ridiculous, because it implies that if we can't find an interview in a fan book somewhere of Mikami's explicit contributions to Resident Evil 1, Resident Evil 4, or Vanquish he clearly had nothing to do with their success or creative direction. That simply is not how development works in a team-based setting.

What would happen if we applied this logic to films? People would be crying fraud all day when they find out that directors don't always write the scripts to their movies, and have directors of photography, editors, art directors, set designers, etc that they work closely with to ensure the quality of all those aspects of film. A director, in both video games and film, is primarily there to say yes or no (and any one of infinite points on the spectrum between those things) to the work his team is creating. To downplay that is seriously ignorant. Not everyone is Shigeru Miyamoto, drawing SMB1 levels on graph paper or Tarantino writing the scripts to his own movies, and that doesn't say anything bad about them.

Now of course I'm not accusing you of any of this. I just think it's worth pointing this out because I can just see people reading posts like that, taking it at face value, and propagating it without really doing any fact checking.

So, do we think this is Starfield? Since that was the last Bethesda trademark?

Not that it's worth stressing over given the reveal is in the morning.

Hope the teaser is something interesting, I have a few things to do tonight and decided to just try and stay up all night to see the teaser in 8 hours. Hope it doesn't disappoint.

Exactly - and that why he is getting most of the credit. As the title implicates, he dictates the (creative) direction. Just like the movie director, which is why he is so important. No one sane claims that there is one person making all the content but as a director Mikami is the guy that say like "Ok, I want this and this. Make it happen." and once they do HE is the one responsible to make it all fit together. So naturally the game director will be the one to be either praised that the game works or to be blaimed that it does not. Therefore the Mikami hype is totally justified.

Yeah sort of like the leader of an army, he gives out the orders, the tactics, when and how, to have victory.

It does not mean his army is not skillful and worthy of praise, it just mean that if they had a different leader the same skillful army could fail.

Eh. That News Bot guy sounds like your typical forum poster who thinks he's the biggest expert of a particular topic despite not having any real knowledge about what's going on in the inside apart of ... what he read in interviews and the conclusions he jumped to in his mind?

Yeah, I get that vibe too.

An hour and fifty minutes to the reveal. I have a feeling that it may not show much and likely will be a CG trailer, but to be honest just happy we're getting news on the game which also sets into motion more news and probably a demo at E3.

But for now, excited to see the game in some form and all the speculation that is likely going to sprout from it.

I'm curious how this will be named. I searched all relevant domain-registrants (Tango, the projectzwei.net owner, Zenimax etc...) for recent domain registrations but I only found these two:

http://mintzz.com/
http://shra.com/

The latter was transfered to ZeniMax' DNS server some time last year. Before this, the site redirected to http://www.shraracing.com/ (some racing association) for ~10 years.

I doubt any of those 2 domains are related but you never know...

I have a feeling the domain was registered in advance, but we will be getting an official name an hour and 45 minutes from now, and I would guess it probably will have some small website attached to it already.

Well I searched Zenimax' DNS and only shra.com couldn't be connected to any other existing game.

Just as a heads-up, as soon as the teaser goes up I am going to be on that topic creation button to make something for it and the game's new name (and possible any other details that may emerge).

So many questions, and though thinking most won't be answered, interested to see where this project is going.

Manage expectation, I am expecting a 30-second teaser trailer composed of mostly text and a moody background with the official title. With those expectations, I am sure to not be disappointed.

26 minutes away!

One of my favourite creators of all time. Loved Vanquish, Resident Evil 2 & 4, I really want return to the kind of terrifying survival horror we used to see in games, and I totally believe that Mikami can pull that off.

I'm hoping this is on PC as well as PS3, seeing as Bethesda is releasing it.

Also the teaser better who some in-game environments at the very least. CG can be damned.

To be fair though there have been some really great survival horror games this gen. Penumbra, Amneshia, Condemned, Siren, SH Downpour (decent), and then all the free to play stuff like SCP 087-B and Slender. But there hasn't been a Resident Evil style game that did horror well in ages.

I dunno, a new IP being announced this late for the current generation would need more than a CG teaser to get people to pay attention. Or at least that's what I hope.

Though to also be fair, this was technically announced a year ago. Its reveal is just being done in 17 minutes.

Anyways, I of course hope for more, but managing expectations and going to expect the thing I would desire least. While there are amazing teasers out there, teasers for already known about projects that have been secretive like this makes me think it may remain secretive.
