The Evil Within (PS3/360/PC/NextGen, idtech5, Tango/Bethesda, 2014): [Up: New Info]

I'm pretty sure this looks like a game I've played already.

Can't say I'm terribly excited to play it again.

Oh, I'm sorry.. umm..

PRAISE THE SUN, MIKAMI'S A GENIUS!!!

Ok... I'm excited by how this looks, but if this is in any fucking way using the engines from Fallout/ES...

That would NOT be a good engine for a game like this... I don't want a survival horror game to feel "stiff" like those games do.

Its almost like it might be a spiritual sequel made by people who are very familiar with the original. Well, at least there's no resident evil in here, there's only evil within
someone slap me already
.

Also, Famitsu article for the new page: http://www.famitsu.com/news/201304/19032216.html

Yeah you can see the low-res effect in action!

I don't know how to feel about this one. I just replayed Rage a few weeks ago and it was wildly inconsistent in its visuals. Sometimes it looks amazing, sometimes it was embarrassing.

Hopefully this is better, but if John Carmack can't even get his own engine working properly, I don't know how this will fare.

Looks cool, but more action-y than expected.

I like the Nightmare Creatures vibe going on in some screens.
Is this set in the Victorian Era or modern times? I can't understand, some screen has some of that old shit vibe, i don't know.

Then again the village in RE4 was also anachronistic.

This uses the engine from Rage.

I would suggest against buying the PS3 version:

Since it's using id Tech 5, I hope the PS4 version gets some love in the texture work with the massive increase in RAM.

Welp, Bethsada/ZaniMax were probably pushing for idtech5. "Pls, SOMEBODY has to use this damn thing!"

Everyone, avoid the PS3/360 versions

Weren't the rumours that Bethesda were making iD finish their engine up properly so that they could employ it with their other projects (and in the process kind of putting Doom 4 on hiatus) or did I grossly misinterpret the latest Doom 4 news?

"the evil within", huh? So would you say that the evil... Is resident?

I will give a cookie to the tenth person to say this. I think we're up to five. :3

Well, apparently a lot of their projects are using idtech5, but the threat was more "If you can't get Doom 4 off the ground, you're going to become an engine studio."

Ahh, right. Probably better since iD's engines seem to be better than their games recently. >_>

False. It's using Unreal Engine 3.

That is not what the Famitsu preview says.

“純粋なサバイバルホラーの実現と、 恐怖と爽快感の極限までの追及”を標榜し開発されてきた本作。ゲームエンジンにはid Tech 5エンジンの最新版を使用し、緻密に描き込まれた狂気と恐怖の世界を描き出す。
 公式サイトで公開されている実写トレイラーでは、生理的嫌悪感と不安感を煽りまくるイメージが連続しており、期待が高まる! 本誌では近日中に詳報をお届けする予定なので、お楽しみに。

Live action trailer? Why?

The monster design is yawn inducing too: a girl with four arms, a dude with a box for a head, a skin less body wrapped in barbwire etc. Not really scary to me, but that's horror for you these days. It's why I have no hope for the genre in general. Creators keep using the same old tricks.

"Mikami's return to survival horror" sounds great and all, but this looks like RE4 crossed with classic Silent Hill and I'm too scared to play this.

Yes, you're right. I didn't read the other post. I'm so sorry.

I will say a prayer for my console gaming brethren.

Not all was happy in PC land, either. Wasn't the game basically unplayable at launch on AMD cards and John Carmack said something to the effect of "Oops, sorry, too bad."?

A proper return to the horror genre?

An actual attempt at making a real horror game?

It actually looks really good so far?

Fuckin A, I'm in.

This doesn't look like id tech 5 (lowres textures aside). It reminds me of UE3 actually.

But if that means id tech 5 has been improved and the lighting isn't as flat as in Rage anymore, then great.

OMG @ that creepy girl coming out of the blood. Typical Mikami, a walking mass of unsettling shit thrown right at you. Deal with it.

Take me back to true horror gaming, Mikami! Lead me to the promise land......... IN HELL!

Outside of the perspective and the piece of artwork of the village, I don't see many stylistic similarities with RE4. Outside of a few moments sprinkled throughout that game, RE4 wasn't anything near resembling a dark, macabre horror game. This game looks like it might actually be creepy, which RE4 was not.

If anything, the look of this game reminds me a lot more of Shadows of the Damned (which could be a very good thing, assuming this game isn't riddled with unfunny dick jokes). I really loved the style of that game, and I wish they didn't try to do comedy horror with it.

I'm liking what the screens and artwork are showing, but I'm interested in seeing how it plays and what (if any) new gameplay elements The Evil Within is bringing to the table. When they talk about "striking the balance" between horror and action, I really hope that they aren't under the impression that RE4 was anywhere near balanced (more like a 95/5 split between action and horror). They'd have to land somewhere in the middle between REmake and RE4.

Looking forward to seeing more. From an atmosphere standpoint, it looks like they've nailed it as far as what I was looking for. As long as I'm not a killing machine like Leon where the enemies are at a distinct disadvantage, and as long as I'm not rewarded for hunting the enemies down, we should be okay.
