Gears of War Judgement |OT| Brothers from the beginning, Bros till the end

Well you certainly have a lot of experience, but I don't think only posting on GAF is right the way to get heard, especially if you're hoping to incite change or provoke thought from the devs. GAF just doesn't have a large fanbase for Gears, or one that cares to participate in the OTs and the community. Gears 3 didn't even pass OT2, whereas Halo is at OT16! And if the community isn't there, I doubt the devs will stick around.

Not too long ago in the Halo OT, one of the members made a huge post about how the Halo brand has been damaged by 4 and it made the rounds on Twitter from professional players to people from 343 Industries. (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=52385775&postcount=19025, https://twitter.com/GH057ayame/status/319448126161297408)

That's the kind of attention you need. Even if they stick to their guns for Judgment, they need people like you to challenge their ideas in hopes that things will get better in the future. This all probably seems really odd of me to say, but that thing you said about "really tired of fighting this same old fight with the devs", it just made me think that maybe you're tired of fighting, but perhaps you've been on the wrong battlefield?

I used the EPIC forums alot through GOW2's release and everything fell on death ears and not to mention the forum was very, very immature at the time,
and people were asking for some ridiculous changes that gained traction (dat GOW2 shotgun power)

We had Cliffy B around allot for GOW3 beta and retail release, he would dip in alot and let fans know that he would always read through and engage discussion on GAF threads (shout out to PXG,Alienshogun, Arnie , zlatko some great post's by all back then) GOW3 turned out to be amazing, really nothing bad to complain about (small niggles) all the GOW3 beta feedback was taken on board and executed well.

For GOWJ, man... i dont know where to start.
thats the reasoning why so many GOW fans just feel like its wasted breath, Fans along with EPIC built the game back up after falling so hard on GOW2 (which also had feedback from GOW1) that i finally felt comfortable were EPIC's was going to take the MP franchise, boy was i wrong (againx2) GOWJ goes against nearly everything that makes Gears unique, fun and intense, we need to go through another beta just to get back to GOW3, this is where the fight ends and the dip in numbers is significant.

I cant argue against Lack of content, No Locust, FFA centred design, Poor Map design and plethora of other mindless and missing changes.

TLTR: GAF is where its at

The problem is Epic does not view a sequel as a "keep the things that work, change what doesn't" approach. Epic has the worst online implementation strategy when it comes to games. Let's take a look a the biggest offender, the manner in which multiplayer is set up.

You summed it up so well in your first sentence, totally agree.

They really don't want to promote this game or share what is in the Season pass, do they?

"The DLC is out tomorrow, go buy it and find out what is in it!"

the real answer: because Epic/MS are cheap fucks. this way they only had to make CoG assets/skins and get to charge $4 for each armor skin.

the official answer: "people didn't like to play as Locust"

I have no doubt that saving money was a part of it, but I bet that not wanting to play as locust is something they hear a ton. I have heard randoms complain about having to be locust in earlier games.

Assets? Reuse the Gears 3 assets. And they made the Locust in Overrun..so I don't see why they couldn't be in other modes. And I haven't really touched Overrun, but would those maps work in other modes?

these videos on Twitch are probably going to be the best answers you get about the changes they made. I think most of their excuses are bullshit though. they discuss the Locust and the possibility of OverRun maps in MP VS.

Ugh. Having to wait a week just because I didn't buy the Season Pass is absolute nonsense. I have to pay for it and that's fair, but that should be the only condition.

That being said, I've bought all Gears MP DLC content pretty much blindly, but the lack of value here is pretty astounding. 1 new map and a rehash for vanilla MP? Weak.

I honestly think that this game should have been made into a different genre, perhaps make it into a rts like X-COM, just to change things and break new ground for the IP

I would love for them to do something really different in the Gears universe. I love the changes they made with GoWJ so I would be open to almost anything.

The problem is Epic does not view a sequel as a "keep the things that work, change what doesn't" approach. Epic has the worst online implementation strategy when it comes to games. Let's take a look a the biggest offender, the manner in which multiplayer is set up.

Gears 1 was P2P, the biggest complaint was host advantage. This is accepted at the time as a necessary evil for a new IP.

Gears 2 was also P2P, so host advantage is not addressed in the slightest. Now let's add a gimped matchmaking system that apparently cannot queue up 10 players at a time looking for a similar game in a similar area. Then it took them three months just to circumvent using standby mode to ruin room after room, further killing the community. Then began the map packs, which fractured an already smaller community (and made matchmaking even worse, if possible). Finally, almost a year after the game released, did they finally release playlists with some semblance of sanity. (Non DLC, Inidividual DLC Players Choice lists, and a I Have everything list). Add the fact that public rooms could never choose difficulty in Horde. Usually finding good horde people was the result of going into a public horde game, asking people if they had mics and half a brain, creating a party, and recruiting. That's broken, and bad. To be honest, I didn't dislike Gears 2 the game, I hated the online system, which needlessly complicated the most basic of concepts, get me online to play execution. And while i'm on the subject, considering most of my Gears 1 time (hell, a majority of most rooms) were execution matches on Gridlock/War Machine/Fuel Depot/Canals with a 5 second DBNO timer, why did they ever change that. The community spoke, the 5 second timer made the game fast paced. Big deal you downed me, come and finish me off or i'm going to get up and stick a gnasher in your face.

Then along comes Gears 3. And guess what, they finally fixed the host advantage. Sometimes.....if you bought the DLC...and if you noticed they were up.... because EPIC sure as hell wasn't forthcoming about when you were on dedi or on P2P. So host advantage is finally fixed, 6 years later, sort of. Doesn't change them from fracturing the community again (though not nearly as bad as Gears 2) with their DLC. Then started the weapon tweaks to phase out the gnasher (which is a topic that has been harped on endlessly so no point for me to talk about it again). They also do something completely idiotic and piss off the achievement crowd and or migrate them offline to play versus bots to get Seriously 3.0 with the ridiculous onyx medal criteria (that still hasn't been tweaked to something a player who played the game for 5 years online competitively would be able to achieve). I will give them credit for the fact that they finally got to a point where the community found the game enjoyable and balanced. (IE Gnasher not phased out, SOS nerfed, and Rifles being viable support weapons)

But of course, we all know how Judgement turned out. More weapon balance garbage (this shit was fixed in 3, just keep it and balance the new guns). Remove Horde/Warzone/Execution? Seriously? Fuck symmetrical maps and territorial battles, let's add the ability to roll off of buildings but not climb up (who the fuck decided that btw?)

The game made the conscious decision to remove dieing as a penalty. They removed it from most of the scoreboards FFS. Every mode is a respawn game except execution. And even that has a ridiculously short timer. It's really not a surprise. There's no such thing as a clutch moment anymore, what the hell?

How they took a game that was designed around quick gritty battles with precision movements and aiming and turned it into a game where glow in the dark skeleton's and plaid glowy lasers just lancer you from high ground, throw down regen grenades, and come up gnashering you really is a testament to how you can fuck up an amazing concept over seven years. If I wanted a COD clone, I'd play COD. The reason I played Gears is because standoffs were circumventable. Map design made it so if 2 or 3 players wanted to take me out when I was by myself and they didn't break up, I could run away and pot shot one down, and eventually take down the team, or I could attack their weakest front. There's no such thing as planning a mode of attack, it's basically a go off and hope you see someone game now. And why Epic thinks I'd enjoy playing a blind developmentally challenged simulator like this is beyond me. But I get, people are idiots, and they have shorter attention spans, so if every second they have a controller isn't spent firing a gun, obviously something is wrong. But I think i've been burned enough times to know that for the next game (if there even is one at this point), i'm waiting for them to fix their shit and I'm picking it up for clearance rack prices.

TL;DR They are ruining this damn series.

cot damn. damn

Really curious as to how the Master At Arms will play in Gears.

As well as playing the new changes to Blood Drive.

EDIT: mernst23, you have a couple valid points there, but the most of your stuff is really contradictory since some things are flat-out wrong, or were in previous Gears titles but you address them as if they were new.

Number one thing being that Judgment again is an experimental title with things they'd never, ever do with a full-on Gears 4. They've said this, and frankly, we knew about all of this from the jump, including how many maps we were getting with the Season Pass. There were things I liked from what I read back then, there were things I didn't like and I still don't in Judgment, but I made that choice based on the info that was laid out because I wanted to try those changes and feel that little shake-up in the Gears formula first-hand, and I haven't been blindsided by anything up till now - I knew what I was getting into. If you didn't read up on the game or did but still bought it anyways, I don't know what to tell ya.

Well, except for making sure to keep dropping your feedback so they know what the community thinks. They actually do respond and answer your questions once you don't come across as a man baby, since PeteNub & Cher have answered my questions every now and then for things I wanted concrete info on that I couldn't test myself.

I'd like to hit you up on each of your points since in the end we all want the best for Gears, maybe when I get the chance when I get back home or something.

wow, looks like a few of the older paid skins are in the pack. can't wait for the complaints about that.

None of those are in the paid pack, there is one that probably looks similar to you though.

Yea, I was establishing a pattern of how Epic operates online Gears. They are extremely shortsighted, and they introduce problems at launch that need to be fleshed out. As far as going to Epic for feedback on my ideas, I call major bs on that going back to Gears 1 when not a single person would answer the most basic of questions "My online stats say I have 13,000 kills, why don't I have seriously?"

I was fine with this being an experimental title. I enjoy overrun, the new style of the campaign, the loadout issue is fine by me although it's ruined the tac-com for me which I used extensively. I don't enjoy playing team dom or ffa or tdm because the maps are just two small in amount and overall just poorly balanced and designed. The decision to only include 4 maps with the title at launch, and then to make them all asymmetric is ridiculous. It's no surprise that Haven appears to be everyone's favorite map, it's the only map with a sane layout. Would it have been that ridiculous to rebuild 4-5 Gears 3 maps for competitive play to include with launch?

On to another topic, are there release notes on the TU?

The player counts have to be off. Just saw Ranked DLC had 2 people worldwide.
And the DLC playlists are broken, they have disc maps in rotation.

I thought that when you played the DLC playlist in Gears 3 non-DLC maps also showed up. IT would be crazy to have a playlist with only 2 maps in it.

This game needs Gears 2 style Horde mode, badly.

Been playing survival with my co-op buddy but its a pretty frustrating experience with two players. I don't see us playing this mode for long.

And while the Campaign is fucking stellar, we've each gone through it several times over now, and while the combat stays interesting throughout, a classic Horde mode would give us a nice secondary mode to get into.

Its just so much more fun and involving to be thrown into actual combat then to try and defend a point or spend your free time repairing barricades.

Any DLC impressions, Gaf? Hate for Epic: rising?

I like all three maps.

Blood Drive plays completely different because they opened up areas of the map that didn't exist before, Boneyard is sort of a re-imagining of Mausoleum from Gears 1 that plays pretty well for TDM and FFA. And terminal is a good overrun/survival map. As usual, I care less about the armor/weapon skins so that part of the DLC is meaningless. I consider it a really poor value for half the season pass, but for the normal 1000 points or 12.50, it's not worth it unless you plan to play a lot.

By comparison, the gears 3 DLC season pass got me 10 maps, a new single player campaign, re-up system, fortification upgrades for horde, and guardian mode for the same cost.

3 maps and 1 new mode (a pretty bleh one at that) is just another kick in the balls.

Picking up a crawling enemy to use as a meatshield is always great, but following that up by tagging said meatshield with a frag grenade before giving em a swift kick into a group of enemies - to watch them stumble before KABOOM - just might be one of the greatest moves in the history of gaming.

Just sayin.

Tried playing the rifle/shotty playlist. It's better, but to echo somebody else from here (I think), the Markza quickly becomes the best rifle. Also grenades need to go to back to smokes across the board. Facing a team of spot grenade users is hell. Just like in Halo, loadouts and Gears don't belong together.

New skins:

I was confused for a few minutes because the Car 13 Weapon Skin is still premium dlc. Call to Arms only unlocks the armor skin.
Epic needs to get it together

Wait is the bottom left armor skin in Call to Arms? Don't remember it being unlocked

I just got round to downloading the TU and DLC, and I only see 4 of the 6 new player skins (Car 13, Ice Burn, Locust, Crazy Doctor) and 2 of the 3 weapon skins (Cascade, Chlorophyl).

What gives!???

Are ALL the DLC maps available on Overrun? What pissed me off is half these maps can't be played in that game mode (unlike every other gears game ever with horde style). Even that free Maxim one we got i've never played due to it not being in overrun.

Nope, just one of the three - Terminal.

Do you guys feel like Judgment may have further killed this franchise? This game I still feel could of been a launch title for next Xbox. I enjoyed the single player but it all felt too soon. Looking at the online numbers if true is sad.

It wont hurt the franchise even 1% It was an unnumbered prequel. When they show Gears 4 on the 720 people will get super excited for it and it will sell like crazy.

Yeah, it's been done to death but let me chime in too.
The MP is a way bigger disappointment than Halo 4's. Terrible changes. What I loved most about Gears warzone MP was A) the consequences of dying, B) how grounded it was in the lore (cog vs locust to the death; no flashy armor skins, respawning or other elements that make it feel unnecessarily "gamey"; no clones running around for the most part) and C) the methodical, cat-and-mouse feel of it.
Fuck this abomination.
The new horde-like mode is a joke.
Glad I rented this instead of buying. The campaign was okay, but still not worth the money. Bland new weapons, generic new enemy, no proper set-pieces.
If Gears 4 doesn't go back to Gears 1/3 style, I might not even bother renting.

Anyone got any tips for doing the beach assault on insane? I can't get anywhere I just get shelled before I can get past the traps.

Go left and near the rocks there's a markza . And theres a little area in the rocks to the left near a grenade trap that keeps you safe from the mortars for a little bit. Use the markza to pick a couple of therons and hopefully your squad moves up on their own. Eventually you'll be right next to the locust and the mortars will stop. Probably one of the hardest parts of the game for me.

So I started this up and the camera/aiming controls don't feel right at all. I'll have to pop 3 back in, but I think the dead zone for the right analog stick has been enlarged. It's ridiculously big now. I've spent the last 30 minutes trying to find settings that feel right with little success.
