Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

If you play as Sonic or Tails alone instead of together, the ring requirement is lower.

Sonic 2 is way easier to get all the emeralds in anyway because you just get so many more chances. Sonic 1 allows 10 attempts total at 6 emeralds, whereas it's possible to get all 7 in Sonic 2 in the very first zone.

damn...looks like im playing solo next time!

estarland trades came in, netted:

Haunting starring Polterguy
Gaiares
Comix Zone
Elemental Master

if Ristar would show up already (Super Off Road too, though that's less likely) i'd be good. also i found a local guy who does genesis repros for a fair price, went in on Centy, Pulseman & a few others, might to back later for Super Bubble Bobble and SOR3 uncut.

Well, T2 and the 6-in-1 cart that came with it were literally the only Genesis cart games that support the Menacer. Sega had made a whole bunch of lightgun games on the Master System, and did some great ones on Saturn and Dreamcast, but somehow the Genesis didn't have any apart from the 6-in-1, first party wise. Very odd. I mean, in design the Menacer is an obvious Super Scope knockoff, but given Sega's long history of lightgun games both before and after the Genesis, it's strange that they didn't really make any (that one super shoddy 6-in-1 aside) that generation, on consoles at least.

The only other games that support the Menacer are American Laser Games' stuff for the Sega CD (Mad Dog McCree, etc.). They support both the Menacer and ALG's own Sega CD gun. I'm not 100% sure if the ALG gun works with those two Menacer cart games...
Soooo what do the Lethal Enforcer games use?

Konami Justifiers.

Yeah, the Genesis Justifier. (The Genesis, SNES, and Playstation Justifiers all have the same name, but are entirely different. One other odd thing is that while the SNES and Genesis player-one Justifiers are blue, and are exclusive to each system (different controller ports of course), but the player 2 Justifier is pink, plugs into the player one justifier, and should work on either system. The PS1 one is green. The Genesis one is by far the most common though...

^haha its funny looking back at all the random accessories though, like my buddy still has our import dreamcast guns about with the seaman mic & others, i hoarded all the older sega stuff but im still replacing some of it (neither of us had the "dance of shame" activator though, heh)

Came across these in a local game shop today. Not really into RPG's so they don't interest me much, but figured I'd post them in here in case anyone was looking for them.

I picked up a copy of Revenge of Shinobi, MERCS, Tin Head, Kid Chameleon, and Air Buster in there for a good price. Going to go back when i get some more money and pick up a ton of stuff. Stores like that I will gladly support because they're doing what they can to keep this stuff alive. Staff was very knowledgeable as well.

^wow. perfect example; i loved PS2's cover till i saw the MD one...so good

in my search for a first edition Revenge of Shinobi (sans all the changes) i think ive resolved to just go for Super Shinobi, seems way easier than just asking every seller to play to level 3 & tell me if the flamethrower guys have rambo headbands

Mine is either the first or second edition because it doesn't have the marvel copyright at the beginning. If I ever make it to level 3 ill know for sure if its the first print.

Now that you mention it, I think mine does, but it's a TecToy copy.

Phantasy Star 2 Japanese cover is so godlike. I would have enjoyed more the game if I had saw that boxart before playing since with that, I would imagined the towns a lot different than how I saw them originally

i have no idea what this means, but ill trade you! heh

TecToy was the official Sega Publisher in Brazil. They also sold all hardware and kept making Genesis and Master Systems long after the systems had died. All the games are the NTSC versions (unless translated or local releases)
I'm pretty sure you can still buy a cart port-less mega drive with a bunch of games in the memory today down here.

I'd check for you, but my Genesis is busted.

They're out there, but you have to be diligent.

I actually got my copy from an eBay seller who was very clear on it being the original release.

Only cost me 10 dollars too.

I made some pickups today. Found some interesting games, boxed ones are mint but World of Illusion is missing the manual, so if anyone can hook me up that would be appreciated.

I grabbed the Sega Club games because I don't see them very often and Ishido is interesting because it's an Accolade release with a PC style box as opposed to the typical Genesis slip case. They also had an golf game that came in the same style but I picked this one up instead. Spent about 70 bucks in total, average of less than ten bucks a pop so I'm happy.

here are the finds:

and the rest of the collection that I have in this city:

I have about 40+ Genesis titles back home, but I'm away until about July before I can unite these two collections.

The store I hit up had some other games but they were over priced a bit. MJ's moonwalker was 25, Gunstar heroes at 25 weren't bad but they had Hyperstone Heist for 40 and Sonic 3 for 20 (I have Gunstar and Sonic 3 back home anyways). All loose and they wouldn't barter with me. Looked like someone had recently traded in their whole colletion because most of this stuff is in great condition and most of price tags are dated within a few days of each other or the same day.

World of Illusion was great with the coop! I always found it better than the more well known Castle of Illusion.

World is really fun in co-op, but it's also really easy. That makes it a great choice for younger children or non-gamer wives and girlfriends, though.

Yeah true enough :) I played through it in single player just last year, and if the coop is similar, than its really easy. Still fun and as you said, perfect for wifes and children!

The lasts two stages are really hard though, even going solo. Is the only Mega Drive Sonic I couldnt get all the emeralds as a kid.

It's pretty fun so far. And there's actually a manual that isn't too expensive on ebay. I might try to grab that just to complete my copy. Steel Empire and Lightening Force are really good SHMUPS. Definitely enjoying those, LF in particular- really good colors.

As for Ishido, it's an unliscensed game so it doesn't work on my Genesis 2. I've got to grab a Game Genie. I didn't even think about that. Pretty neat none the less.

Okay guys, help me out here. I'm going to buy one of these SCART to component converters. I'll be hooking it up to a Sony WEGA CRT so I don't need any kind of signal converter but which one of these cables do I want for a model 1, US Genesis?

This one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sega-Genesis-1-Megadrive-1-stereo-RGB-SCART-TV-lead-/200886369256?pt=US_Video_Game_Cables_Adapters&hash=item2ec5c2bbe8

Or this one with boosted sync: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sega-Genesi...deo_Game_Cables_Adapters&hash=item2ec5ceb0e9?

What's the difference? Or is there a better option out there? I've heard this seller is known for quality cables.

Yeah. It has a really cool Marvel style and is a good use of the old mega drive style look. It's not a bad game, but much better suited for 2 players. The music is actually really good but the voice acting.... shudder.

I haven't been able to get to the third level in Revenge of Shinobi yet... maybe I have a gem. Right after I picked it up, I saw another copy at my local store but none of the other iterations of the game have popped up yet.

The voice acting wasn't good in any version of the game, AFAIK. I mean, you can only do so much with such classic exchanges like "Don't disturb us!" "Why should it goes well?"

I was under the impression that the SNES port was garbage and the Genesis port was decent; do correct me if I was mistaken.

Yeah. Bad writing too. My girlfriend and I button mashed our way through the first 3 or 4 levels no problem. I never played the SNES version nor the arcade for that matter but I enjoy it. Plays well for what it is...

Also, looking up on sega16 regarding Shinobi, my copy has a 1.00 or 1.01 style back plate with the caution text centered. It will be interesting to play this a bit more tomorrow and see if I can own some Rambo baddies.

^^Hyper Stone Heist is so good too! I like it more than the SNES turtles game.

Got my component box today. My SCART cables are "in transit".... SOON. Soon I will be 16-bit gaming like I've never 16 bit game'd before.

For anyone from seattle, I just noticed another mini museum of retro stuff near the space needle (inside armory). They had consoles setup and several titles you could try. Genesis included of course.

Gynoug's actually not bad. It's not a great game, but it's solid enough. It's worth playing primarily for the weird-ass designs. $8 is a little steep, though...

Actually, looking at it now it is $6 on the J-VC Store. Just kinda trying to find something to buy. Almost looked as if some levels used a pseudo-mode-7. That kinda intrigued me. (!)

Would anyone here be able to region mod a genesis 2 for me? I can trade you a genesis 1 that needs replaced sound capacitors plus some cash. Sorry if this is the wrong thread.

damn someone traded in a killer shooter collection im going to snag most of it when they post it

This is beautiful. So many quality games...in such good condition.

Steel Empire is still one of my favorite SHMUPs ever made. It's just so awesome. The bosses alone are all amazing, with so many breakable parts.

I've enjoyed it quite a bit so far. Really solid gameplay. I use the bi plane mostly so far, the zeppelin is a bit too large for me and sluggish.
