You make it sounds like anime are just about little girls.

Alot of money that is made currently tough, exploits it tough. And I'm talking all kinds fetish-teasing. There are alot of feet in SHAFT Anime right now.

Oh my god....and this is on the twitter feed now too. AMAZING

This forum seems to make a big deal out of everything. Well, I don't mind it.

What so different, thing always look bleak at top heavy game.

You must look the stuff in-between.

No, it's not particularly lucrative, even in it's home market. You have the odd massive success story like a Ghibli or Hosoda or Evangelion movie, and then you have a bunch of titles that are moderately successful with otaku and then the rest are complete failures. Staff are paid poorly, exceedingly poorly for the hours they have to pull to produce a work, and companies don't really make any money doing it.

Outside the main domestic market anime is most successful is in France, with a few select works being hits in US and elsewhere. Now, this isn't to say that it doesn't have some fans in America, according to the anime convention numbers at least.

This sounds really depressing, even though I'm not much of an anime fan. Makes anime sound like it's on life support.

Do interesting, weird animes still get made like The Flowers of Evil because of auteur theory? Some dude had a passion project, laid it out there with a team, 13 episodes and then low sales be damned?

They do, but not as often. It's a pretty sad thing when shows that are pushing boundries and trying to redefine the medium as an artwork are usually pushed to 12:30am in japan or later and are bookened by "uncensored" titty animes.

Is that the porn timing?

I remember watching Toonami really late at night, some awesome anime I discovered at that time. Submarine 6 or something?

Sigh, I remember the days when people associated anime with violence and science fiction and robots and "shit that has to be censored for american audience because we aren't allowed to show tits on tv like you can in japan"

Now it seems non-anime fans associate with with uguu bullshit

Okay seriously.

The real issue with anime right now is that producers in general have decided to double down on the super-niche otaku market. This is basically the mirror opposite of how a lot of industries go for the mass-market audiences. A lot of people complain that it's shrinking the anime industry.

I remember when I used to think Japan was cool....then Japanese fans and the way they changed the Japanese entertainment to cater to fetishes and fan service to a much larger scale has made me really not like anime and a majority of Japanese entertainment

THats not to say there is still some really great things in anime (little witch academy was shockingly innocent and wonderful), but their voice seems to be drowned out by the squeals of barely legal anime qirls in awkwardly implied sexual situations

$50/hour, but no kissing on the lips and colors must be pre-separated
I remember visiting Fry's in the past and they'd have (and maybe still do, not sure) this half blocked-off small hentai section at the end of the anime aisle, and I always wondered what dudes actually came in, didn't mind being seen grabbing something from the selection AND THEN taking it up front to actually purchase it. I just assumed it was there to get people entered into government watch databases. I wonder how awkward it was for an employee to stock that section as assorted families walked by.

Wanna hear a good joke? Waste your time helping me! LOL!

That's only because people have an agenda and/or don't do research. It's not the majority.

the best Anime are the cartoon network american anime like Dargon Ball z and Gundam Wing.

:I

Though related: I was always surprised that Cartoon Network never tried to go after less traditionally gender specific shows. Stuff like Nichijou or Azumanga Daioh would be perfect for their lineup right now, considering their headliners consist of mostly random material that doesn't rely on story to be entertaining.
