New Emily Rogers about the Virtual Console

Emily Rogers just posted a new article about Nintendo's Virtual Console.

http://www.notenoughshaders.com/2013/04/28/the-future-of-the-eshop-and-virtual-console/

You might remember she tweeted some hints that 3DS and Wii U VC might have some compatibility in the future. She goes into a bit more detail in this article:

About four or five days ago, I hinted at the idea of Wii U VC games being playable on 3DS, and 3DS VC games being playable on Wii U. It sounds amazing, but it’s not that simple. And I question whether anyone can actually call it “cross play” since you’re basically rebuying your games.

Not every VC game will allow this.

A VC game would have to release on both Wii U VC and 3DS VC for this to work.

You have to pay a discount price to transfer a Wii U VC game to 3DS. It would be just like how you pay a discount price to play a Wii VC game on Wii U.

She also shoots down the hopes of anyone thinking that meant Nintendo was implementing some kind of account system:

On another note: Some people have asked me if this means games will be linked to an account. I don’t think these two things are related. Linking one piece of hardware to another piece of hardware doesn’t require an account. If you can send your Miis from your 3DS to your Wii U, then I don’t see why it would be difficult to do the same with certain VC games. Especially since Nintendo had a feature on the original Wii where you could download DS demos to your DSi.

This isn't exactly the news I was hoping for when I saw her original tweets. Nintendo's whole Virtual Console thing is kind of a mess right now.

About the account system, I think Nintendo would implement that whenever Miiverse arrives for the 3DS.

Bringing a Miiverse account wouldn't require tying any purchases to that account though. There's really nothing stopping them from doing an account system right now other than them not wanting to do it.

Wii u has miiverse and digital purchases are still tied to the hardware. What reason is there to think that giving 3DS access to miiverse would change it?

I wouldn't be surprised if we have to wait until next gen to have a legitimate account based system. It's been two years since the 3DS was released, almost seven months since the Wii U launch, and all we're being told is 'it's coming'. Well, yea, I'm sure it's eventually going to happen but Nintendo is surely taking it's sweet ass time.

I can't believe how backwards Nintendo is with this. I mean, just use the Sony system. It crushes this option. I can play my PSX games on both Vita and PS3--no extra charge.

That's weak. Nintendo really should be following Sony's example on this.

But Nintendo requires their virtual console games to have 100% perfected emulation and instruction booklets and they don't want to devalue their legacy titles and...

What's weird is the DD Promotion stuff keeps track of all your purchases tied to your account too.

It would appear to be tied to a Nintendo Network account. The games themselves, however, are tied to the system they are purchased on. Nintendo Network accounts are also tied to the system they are created on and cannot, at this time, be moved to another Wii U.

It's why I don't believe it's due to a technical limitation but rather Nintendo trying to nickle and dime their users as much as feasibly possible for as long as possible. They could have simply used club nintendo accounts from day one of the Wii U/3DS but they chose not to. The fact that Nintendo customer care has access to all of your purchases AND has the ability to grant you access to these games on new hardware shows that the capability is there. Nintendo just doesn't want to grant it to their users full stop.

If there's no account system, the discount price is a must to prevent sharing, I suppose. Like if my friend has a game on the 3DS, I could copy it to my Wii U, and so on. Two people would get games for the price of one.

Brilliant if true

Nintendo really does know how to please the fans. I can't wait to spent 200 dollars to transfer all my games to nextWii

I had heard that Sony just ate the relicensing fees for themselves, with regards to PS1 compatibility on the Vita. I don't think Nintendo would be down for that, as customer-friendly as it would be.

Some countries don't have Club Nintendo.

Not too shocking. Nintendo sees VC games as re-releases rather than the creation of a catalogue of historical games.

Hopefully the WiiU/3DS thing is not used by anyone and they just provide it.
Its one of the more frustrating things with Nintendo; I don't see it as beneficial to them or the consumer.

If Nintendo legitimately does something like this I'm going to laugh so fucking hard. If they don't fix the complete lack of an account system I'm just not going to purchase their hardware anymore. This isn't the late 90's/early 2000's anymore, Nintendo. There are already account systems in place that you could easily copy, but instead you make the most anti-consumer digital store available.

I wonder what happened with the web eShop? Iwata talked about it last year but there hasn't been a lot said since.

BTW I'd pay a small fee like the WiiU upgrade to cross-play my VC games. That's legit enough, I'm just not going to pay $5 for Donkey Kong Jr on Wii U (or ever at that price) especially when I have it on my 3DS from the ambassador releases.

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
Unsurprising if true. More hot garbage from Nintendo's VC pricing and account management.

Will buy 30c Super Metroid next month then let the service rot.
Until I can pay for a 3DS transfer :(.

Are you kidding me? I have to pay to transfer what i already bought?

Nintendo seriously, pull it together.

To pull it together makes it seem that Nintendo is just having a difficult time. This is on purpose. This is how Nintendo see's digital distribution.
It's archaic and I really hope it bites them in the ass just so they'll be forced to change.

Nintendo always passes the buck to the consumer and is notorious for avoiding fees and royalties if they can.

Nintendo being so anal about digital purchases would be hilarious if I wasn't directly affected. Just imagine people sharing games, oh the horror!

See, this is the type of bullshit that is going to come back and haunt Nintendo in a big way. This is riding off nostalgia to an extreme degree.
