Sega Genesis/MegaDrive Appreciation Thread: Alien Storm > Golden Axe

Would anyone here be able to region mod a genesis 2 for me? I can trade you a genesis 1 that needs replaced sound capacitors plus some cash. Sorry if this is the wrong thread.

If you can't find anyone else that will do it I would it for some genesis games in trade and money to ship back to you. As long as you're not asking for a PAL 50hz mod.

That's a picture of mine that I modded.

A pawn shop I go to frequently told me they got a jvc xeye in, and it looks pretty cool. I'm a fan of the retron, so the convenience combo of the sega cd and genesis in one console is appealing.

Anyone know what's a good price for it, as they can't put it out until next week and said they don't know what they'll charge for it.

space megaforce I don't think I have box/manual for anymore

musha manual might be a little ratty but good shape otherwise. I need to dig it up and have a look, been in the closet for a few years!

Keep us posted. I'm sure there are some collectors interested in this thread, including possibly myself.

wonder when chronsega will be back around as well

ps SNES thread pointed to a good/stable flashcart, does Genesis have one?

Still wish he would not have those long pauses in between sentences for Generation 16, drives me nuts. Cool episode though, Whip Rush looks pretty sweet, I remember hearing about it back in the day, but thought it had a silly name, and I really wanted Gaiares instead.

watching the ep now, i still don't know what you're on about...classic game room and even chronsega do this kinda thing, they drop a line or two and let the game play for a while before speaking more on it. i get that you find it jarring, but having had to listen to many a YT playthrough with prepubescent narrarators who seem terrified to just let the game's music play, it's kind've merciful for me

*edit chronsega's speaker is way more chatty but his voice kinda makes me wish he wasn't sometimes, which is a shame cause again he's crazy knowledgeable

Thanks for reminding me about this as well. Really looking forward to watch it later today!

Don't know if this is the better place to post this, but I think this is very promising.

For those of you who don't know, I've been working on an emulator called Exodus for the last few years. In fact, I've been working on this emulator since November 2006 if you can believe it. After years of work, I'm pleased to announce I'll be officially making a public release of this emulator before the end of April.

I've been doing extensive hardware testing since I began this project to gather the necessary information to make the most technically accurate Mega Drive emulator ever written. I performed and published results of my testing on the YM2612 back in 2008, and a lot of Mega Drive emulators now have more accurate sound emulation as a result. This testing was initiated to assist the development of my own YM2612 emulation core for Exodus. I've also done a lot of testing on the VDP over the last couple of years to build a cycle accurate VDP core, which is fundamentally more accurate than any other VDP core in existence, and can correctly respond to mid-line state changes. In fact, all of the emulation cores used by Exodus are written entirely by me, from scratch, relying primarily on direct hardware testing to confirm many aspects of their implementation. Accuracy has been paramount in the design and development of this emulator, and I hope it will become a new standard for emulation accuracy.

My efforts aren't just focused on the Mega Drive however. I've spent a lot of time working on the overall design and architecture of Exodus to make probably the most generic, flexible, and scalable emulation platform ever written. This emulator is fundamentally different to every other emulator I know of, in several critical ways. I'll publish more about that towards the time of release, but most importantly, Exodus is not a Mega Drive emulator. Exodus is a generic emulation platform, which allows systems to be assembled from individual components at runtime. Nothing related to a particular system is hardcoded. Exodus constructs a system from a set of discrete components, manages the communication between those components, and keeps perfect timing accuracy between each component. Other systems can easily be modelled without modifying or rebuilding Exodus, it simply requires emulation cores for each device in that system to be available. As more cores are available for Exodus to use, more and more systems can be modelled easily, as a lot of systems share common components.

With Exodus, I'm starting my emulation efforts with the Mega Drive, but I have my sights set on plenty of other systems, like the Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast, and various Sega arcade systems. I've spent the last few years collecting a wide variety of hardware for testing and analysis, and I'm going to continue this project and expand it into many other platforms. I'm planning to continue advancing and leading this project, and I hope one day it will be able to rival even the biggest emulation projects such as MESS and MAME for system support, while providing a number of key advantages over other projects.

Exodus is also an extremely powerful debugging, development, and analysis environment, which I'm hoping will be able to serve as a very useful tool for communities involved in development, hacking, and reverse engineering, to be able to do more complex and thorough debugging and testing in software, where you can trust that if it runs properly in Exodus, it will run the same way on the real hardware, and vice versa.

Exodus will also be fully open source. This will happen shortly after the first release, after some further thought and discussion about licensing. An SDK will be provided which will allow any other interested developers to write and adapt cores for use in Exodus. Cores exist as separate DLL files, and can be compiled and released separately from the emulation platform itself, so individual cores can be developed and released on their own schedule, and don't need to be locked into the release schedule of the platform itself.

Exodus will finally see its first official, non-beta/preview release this month! On or before the end of April, no matter what, I'll be making the first release. Stay tuned for more information as the date draws nearer.

This level of emulation is something never done before for Genesis/Megadrive. Fusion provide an high compatibility an OK accuracy, but this is a whole new level.

It will be available tomorrow.

Great news!. This should hopefully be the equivalent of bSNES. Even better are the news about other Sega consoles and arcade hardware <3 <3

Btw. on the same topic i' ll also give Wii's Genesis Plus GX 1.73 a shout out for picture and sound accuracy as well as a nice gui and multiple controller support (it even supports that obscure analog controller posted a few pages back). Anyone who has a CRT and a homebrew enabled Wii should try that ASAP and see for themselves.

Exciting! It's projects like these that will help reserve our history of games for future generations. Just think, in the not too distant future, someone could want to play an old Genesis/Mega Drive game, print up a controller with their 3D printer, and play some very accurate recreations of these cherished classics.

So what looks better, emulator on a Laptop through HDMI on a LCD, Wii playing an emulator using component cables on a LCD, or the actual retro console hooked up through SCART/Upscaleron on a LCD?

^that is indeed excellent news! and yeah, it was said but my favorite bit:

Saturn finally hit system replacement (after a long wait), but the DC scene, last i checked seemed all but dead in the water..that + arcade systems sounds amazing, can't wait to hear more on this

I paid good money for this Dynex!
lol, isn't the Turbo/PCE CD version better anyway? If so it must be a rarity thing.

PCE version's supposed to be better, but it's not a night and day difference.

But yeah, as people are saying, price on everything old-school is going up. Which is probably great if you were smart enough back in the day to buy halfway decent games.

:(

The only major difference between the TG16 and Sega CD versions are the soundtracks. They're played on different types of guitars. The TG16 version is rawer while the Sega CD version is cleaner. I greatly prefer the Sega CD version.

There are a couple of minor graphical disparities, but they're barely noticeable. The game has also been pricey for quite awhile, but not $80 pricey.

Next game on my wish list is Ghouls N Ghosts. I cant believe I fell into hype before the days of youtube and believed Nintendo fanboys that Super GnG was the definitive version in the series. Having played it, the slowdown in that came is terrible. Watching some youtube vids on the Genesis version, it is pretty clear that both graphically and gameplay wise it is superior. Can't wait to get my hands on it.

You do know that these are two different games in the series?

Genesis buys over the last month or so. All complete and most are like new...

Steel Empire courtesy of Genesis Knight. Thanks!

Fire Shark was opened at the seam and plastic was still on.

Fshark.jpg

I have Gaiares complete on the way soon, too. I've spent a little bit on these, but Fire Shark was the one that cost the most and it was seriously worth it. Fantastic game. Here's the breakdown w/shipping included...

Streets of Rage 2 $15
Rolling Thunder 2 $20
Rolling Thunder 3 $15
Eternal Champions $8
Shadow Dancer $26
Steel Empire $18
Fire Shark $28
D&D Warriors of the Eternal Sun $10 <- That was a steal
Gaiares $25

I have arguably overpaid for some of these, but in this market I don't feel too badly about it, especially since they're all original and complete. They're also all getting played which for me is just as important.

Steel Empire is a real underrated gem IMO. Shadow Dancer is amazing. Eternal Champions is pretty crap (but pretty!) and the Rolling Thunder games are both excellent. Fire Shark is the one I'm probably happiest about despite the high price. It's just so damn playable!

Thanks! I have really been enjoying the chase, but also the results. Even when I feel like I've overpayed, the condition has made it seem worthwhile. I figure that will pay dividends someday when it gets sold by myself or my kids or grandkids or something.

nice - anything cheaper than stoneagegamer? it looks like they're sold out of the regular/non-mega edition, might just be cheaper to buy the board & have a local repro guy put it in a shell for me i guess

There are two different Genesis Everdrives. The first one is the Everdrive MD, and the second one is the Mega Everdrive. I really don't know the difference between the two, but if you search for the earlier version, you might find a better price if you don't mind second-hand.

Now I just gotta haul that 160 Lbs (That's 20 pounds more than me) TV up to my room. :p

so jelly - i paid about that for several of those loose, congrats man! D&D and Steel Empire are the only ones i don't have, lemme know if they're good!

yeah, according to stone age gamer the MD might be faster, has USB & such...it sounds like the old one would work perfectly fine for my needs, but neither seems to show up on ebay. where else might i look for it second hand?

Please break down your setup for someone who wants to get into SCART.

Easiest way if you have a model 1 is:

Scart -> Component converter -> component cables for video.
3.5 mm auxillary cable from headphone port to some sort of speaker setup (or TV if possible) for audio.

Nice pickups man. Lots of quality in there and I'm glad to see another Steel Empire fan!

Fun fact about Rolling Thunder 3: It was developed in Japan but only released North America.
